Imagine what it was like in the rain, at night, or worse yet, at night in the rain! Nothing today demands skill, judgement, and sheer reflexes from the driver as did Le Mans prototype driving in the 80's.
The car is a works Rothmans Porsche 956 driven by Derek Bell at Le Mans in 1983 and comes from the Duke Video "In Car 956". I know this because I have the video. There is some film of Lloyds car on another video but rest assured this is Bell in the Rothmans car.
In qualifying trim they hit about 246. I think renault went about 253 down the straight for a couple of laps in race trim but was unreliable. Renualt just wanted to break the mulsanne speed record that's it. You won't get over 260 with 2wd.
Wow, the short breaking distance at the end of Mulsanne Straight is unbelievable! From 250 mph down to about 65 mph in probably less than 5 sec.!!! These guys had "large attachments" as David Hobbs would say...
as good as he was, he still was no way near stefan bellof. imagine if it had been senna prost mansell and bellof in F1. the best period in motorsports history could have been even better. still lots of respect to mr bell and the others for even driving these cars. 240mph !?!
Mistakes? That's Derek Bell, possibly the best sports car driver ever. When you've got a trophy case bigger than your house (as im sure he does) then come back and complain.
thanks you guys in europe for posting this videos.. i want to go there one day and watch le mans live... anyway, how can this car overtook the other porche so easily? did he give way??
No, there are different categories of cars racing at the same time. The porsche is nog as powerful as the leading cars. Or maybe he's got technical problems. In a 24 hour race, a lot can happen.
The record speed that year race was 351 km/h (217.6 mph) Porsche 956.
Without any instrument made music, just engine music, this video is amazing.

Derek Bell wasn´t in 1984 Le Mans. He was 2nd in 1983 Le Mans with 956 Rothmanns, also Ickx.
However, the red windshield, was common on Cannon Porsche 956, Richard Lloyd Racing.

This video is slightly sped up, that's why the sound doesn't match the action. Check my comparison video.
