  • The record speed that year race was 351 km/h (217.6 mph) Porsche 956.

Without any instrument made music, just engine music, this video is amazing.

  • 2.65 L turbocharged Flat-6, 635 HP...Now that's what i called a Beauty!! :D

  • @bedobear too bad_ i went in 1988 and 1989- best days for me...and real car fans then..now its full of chavs and lager louts...a beer fest :( :(

  • terrifying acceleration !!! :) :) :)

  • 6 cylinder boxer-turbo... what a stunning machine!

  • Imagine what it was like in the rain, at night, or worse yet, at night in the rain! Nothing today demands skill, judgement, and sheer reflexes from the driver as did Le Mans prototype driving in the 80's.

  • got dammit....that first straight is like driving down the interstate highway. Fuckin A....thats blinding fast!!

  • MADNESS. The 911 drivers might as well have been on horseback!

  • omfg.....

you can feel the brakes at 1.39 while you just watch it (!)

    What a ride..

  • Show

  • Er no...

The car is a works Rothmans Porsche 956 driven by Derek Bell at Le Mans in 1983 and comes from the Duke Video "In Car 956". I know this because I have the video. There is some film of Lloyds car on another video but rest assured this is Bell in the Rothmans car.

  • i spoke to the FIA ON FRIDAY AND THEY HAVE PLANS TO REMOVE THE CHICANES

  • Oh good - thanks for taking care of that for us.

  • Derek Bell wasn´t in 1984 Le Mans. He was 2nd in 1983 Le Mans with 956 Rothmanns, also Ickx.

However, the red windshield, was common on Cannon Porsche 956, Richard Lloyd Racing.

  • these were the best days of racing ever ....

even today nothing goes as fast as these

  • not... that... fast...

  • This man is a GOD in a car

  • It's amazing how close they get to the armco at Indianapolis at that time, almost put it in the wall on this lap... :)

  • Endurance legend.

  • In qualifying trim they hit about 246. I think renault went about 253 down the straight for a couple of laps in race trim but was unreliable. Renualt just wanted to break the mulsanne speed record that's it. You won't get over 260 with 2wd.

  • This video is slightly sped up, that's why the sound doesn't match the action. Check my comparison video.

  • This is a great video. Love the way he reels them in!

  • Wow, the short breaking distance at the end of Mulsanne Straight is unbelievable! From 250 mph down to about 65 mph in probably less than 5 sec.!!! These guys had "large attachments" as David Hobbs would say...

  • Hehe, he is fiddling around with switches and drives with one hand on the weel at 250 MPH... These guys got balls for sure.

  • as good as he was, he still was no way near stefan bellof. imagine if it had been senna prost mansell and bellof in F1. the best period in motorsports history could have been even better. still lots of respect to mr bell and the others for even driving these cars. 240mph !?!

  • They did all race together at some point in F1

  • OMG. The old lap. Scary. And beutiful also :)

  • Wow, no chicanes- look at the speed!

  • Lemans. The classic

  • i dont know where this is from but doesnt it look like he does a lot of mistakes?

  • Mistakes? That's Derek Bell, possibly the best sports car driver ever. When you've got a trophy case bigger than your house (as im sure he does) then come back and complain.

  • No, cars back then were simply far more difficult to drive hard.

  • Well, i'm not impress at all, i go faster when i drive my RENAULT 19

  • *impressed

  • Over 240 miles per hour.

  • just a question what is the top speed?

  • thanks you guys in europe for posting this videos.. i want to go there one day and watch le mans live... anyway, how can this car overtook the other porche so easily? did he give way??

  • No, there are different categories of cars racing at the same time. The porsche is nog as powerful as the leading cars. Or maybe he's got technical problems. In a 24 hour race, a lot can happen.

  • way cool trip around the famous track!!!
