A stereo mix was made in the early 70s of the original mono version (at Delia's insistence, most likely) "electronically reprocessed for stereo" (put at the left and slightly delayed on the right) with some TARDIS effects added. This version has been the most popular version of theme, since it's in stereo. Mark Ayres made a true stereo mix (and 5.1 as well) after Delia passed away. The tapes were stored in her attic after she left the BBC.
@AidanLunn True, very true. Crackles and other "problems" with the vinyl medium usually arise from bad maintenance of both equipment and records, both of which can be easily amended. Audio nerds rule!

Awesome, I never knew that this version of the theme contained the TARDIS' take off/landing noises. ^^

@HTprods
in fact, it was sometimes left near the start of the episode where the previous one went to credits, especially noticeable in day of the daleks.

Hey, CDs are worse than vinyl!!!
Analogue electronics are technically superior to digital, despite what most other non-techies say!

This theme has a sort of echo to it, and a slighty lower pitch.
