I had read a great deal about his playing at this point in time, including how Wanda refused to be at his side then. This is the first time I have listened to it. Now I think that the greatest comeback of his life was recovering from this period, and giving us those wonderful final last years.

Even here, he plays without the score...even here, there are many moments of originality and insight...and to think he was afflicted by the side-effects of psychotropic drugs at this time, it boggles the mind to think of what the man was still able to do at the keyboard. When he rose like phoenix in 1985, he more than redeemed himself in recital and on disk.

poor maestro. yet even here, he made music and kept his dignity. when he came back, he was better than ever.
