The crime situation in South Africa, is so bad that at times certain areas basically become war zones. The cops have therefore learnt that armed force is the only force. What makes the use of armed force here bad is that it is completely innapropriate. Stellenbosch students don't carry guns. They are no threat to the police and the police had no reason or right to get so violent.

I ASSURE you this was about power and not race - I saw several officers of different colours treating everyone in the clubs in exactly the same way, regardless of skin tone.
I truly understand an event such as this can cause tempers to fly, but it should galvanize the youth together across colour lines to stand up against abuse like this. Let me reiterate...it is about abuse of power not racism.

It seems that since police can never catch the real bad guys they have to take out the anger on soft targets such as students It bullshit that the molested those girls. so many people in SA are keen to talk about being tough on crime, it seems to me, from the UK, this is what the police is doing, presumably acting on info and cracking down on drugs. why can't the student's just cooperate, empty their pockets and when the police leave, go back to their drinks? and if the student's have a problem with the police not being polite enough, lodge a complaint at the station later?

onlythesmith, are you blind?! The students weren't fighting back, there was NO reason for the police to use such violence. Read the news reports - their "drug raid" only turned up a bit of hashish, a few bags of weed and a bit of cocaine. That justifies all the violence?
If they wanted to "crack down on drugs" they would target the dealers, not students. When my friend tried to lodge a complaint at the station the officer told her not to do it there because the other officers would cover it up.
