Nirvana gets all the credit and hype when it comes to using grunge to bring the alternative sound of the early 90's to the forefront, but the simple fact of the matter is this very Mudhoney song was the first grunge song to be played on Live 105 (bay area) beating Smells Like Teen Spirit by several months to the airwaves. Though they weren't as commercially successful as Nirvana they deserve their rightful due as the first grunge band to get mainstream airplay.

@prefonberry1 I stand corrected. Though Mudhoney had previous recordings, Piece of Cake, which this song is from was released in Oct. '92 while Nevermind was released in Sept. of '91. I may have been thinking of an earlier Mudhoney song, but more than likely all the partying I did during that period has left my memory slightly disjointed. Thanks for the clarification.

@livingstillbirth That was Touch Me I'm Sick. Which came out in 1987. It was pretty big on college and indie stations in the late 80s.

But really, the first grunge band to receive mainstream attention was Green River. Mark and Steve's band before Mudhoney.

1st time i saw this vid was on 120 mins when i was 17, caught them when they played @ Hairy Mary's 3 weeks later, religion can't even come close to the vibe (real) music had on ppl during those years. Is Mudhoney Grunge or was it just forced into the scene? I know that Mark Arm fronted Green River, but this stuff is just more garagey than Nirvana or Pearl Jam.

great band, boring singer. Don't know what it is, probably the fact that he copies Iggy Pop to a tee, and just isn't that good or charismatic. Maybe it's the fact he's so worshipped by Seattle scenesters (EX-scenesters). I don't hate Cornell, even though he's a moaner now. Loved Layne even though all he sang about was heroin and misery. Loved Cobain, he was the only real genius of grunge except Matt Cameron and Layne. Mudhoney -great band live - Mark Arm - so overblown.

I'd be a phony if I tried to create something else while knowing, for what I like, perfection is right here. Go figure.
