China is not perfect but neither is USA or any other country in the world.
UNICOR has 109 factories in federal prisons (in the US), producing about 175 different types of products and services, including clothing and textiles, electronics, fleet management and vehicular components, industrial products, office furniture, recycling activities; and services including data entry and encoding.
Inmates earn from US$0.23 per hour up to a maximum of US$1.15 per hour
Type 'US prison slavery' into Google and see how many results you get. In fact the only way the US can compete with China is by having a booming prison industry. The US locks up more of it's people than China, even though China has a much larger population.
As long as we Americans keep buying products made in China (especially from stores like Wal-Mart), we are supporting this slavery system.
Large corporations, such as Nike, are likewise guilty--not of using prisoners--but guilty of exploitation of the poor by paying slave-wages to workers in third world countries, who make their products.
As if the West did not do the exact same thing... Chaining children and women to their factory machines during the industrial revolution for example...
"Slave-like conditions," which I do not agree with, is something that has already been proven to be needed in order for a country that is mainly agricultural-based to modernize and industrialize. Anyone living in the West, enjoying the benefits of modernization and industrialization, are hypocrites if they criticize China based on this.
@Urvakhsha You don't get the point. Because of China's problems, both foreign and internal based, in the late 18th century to the mid 20th century had retarded China's ability to modernize, urbanize, capitalize and industrialize. Yes we are in the 21st century, but you need to understand regardless of what century you are in, you need to modernize fast and just like the West, you cannot prevent cheap and slave labour, it is something that is too hard to do.
@Maxdwolf Then what wonderful idea do you have in mind then? Wouldn't anything else easily retard China's growth at least for now? And also, just stating a fact of hypocrisy if the West criticize China on this issue.
@Ravensteinzh Stating a question is not proof. What is required for modernization and industrialization are technological innovation which requires education and freedom of thought. China's government is holding it back.

If the people don't know where the product comes from and it is a hidden fact to everyone other than those involved, then how are they supposed to do anything about it if it is shipped half way around the world before it is sold?
Yup. Prisoners continue to be human beings even after sentence is passed, afterall. Although I'd pay more attention to the basis of sentencing in the Chinese judicial system, being as politically motivated and thoroughly corrupt as it is.
We have prisoners in the United States building roads for us and other recreational parks so I don't know what's so wrong about it unless they were innocent .
Just remember (all that support this)..You may say prisoners deserve this but it is antiquated laws and corruption (in most cases) that put people in prison. Some did commit a TRUE CRIME BUT MOST DO NOT.If you really believe in rehab then an education,so one doesn't have to commit crime, will help solve most of this crime problem. And you could very easily, due to legal structuring, wind up right there beside them.No one should be forced to do ANYTHING against their will, period.
@SnakeDoctor33 It's very convenient to focus on "political criminals" or those who were wrongfully put in jail. But do you have any proof they're the majority? And what if in a certain country, say Norway, we can safely assume they aren't? Would it be OK if Norway approved such a law, as most of its prisoners are indeed dangerous to society? And who said people shouldn't be made to do things they don't want? Should we then set arrested murderers free, since they don't want to be kept in jail?
Hooray for China. What reason is there for govts to treat prisoners like children: to provide them with a roof, a bed, and food, in exchange for nothing? What's the problem in making productive individuals out of people who need to be punished, not only to be prevented from breaking the rules again, but also to serve as examples to people in general? It's kind of ironic that AJE is making a fuss about it, since its boss, the Qatari government, isn't known for being concerned about human rights.

America has more people in prison than China. UNICOR Labor is currently used in prisons, and with more privatizing, the conditions in America's prisons are resembling the third world more and more - skipped meals, less contact with the outside, no access to books, removing of library systems and education, etc. The US is passing more frivolous laws putting people (especially minorities) behind bars to suit the profit prison industry. Lets clean our house before we criticize China.
Slavery thrives 7x as much in the US than in China, as China locks up 115 people per 100,000 the United States locks up over 700 people per 100,000. Our prisoners are also forced to work, manufacturing goods, as well as providing services like in Oregon where DMV customer service is state inmates. China doesn't have private prison lobbyists who press for stiffer sentences and tougher laws in order to incarcerate more people and generate more profits. AlJazeera PR for US Gov.
and American prisons are any better? Privately owned prisons do the exact same thing! On the other extreme, public prisoners live off billions of taxpayer money! In China at least they make prisoners pay and suffer like they should, here in the US we hand them our tax money and give them a vacation, only so they can commit more crimes once they get out. Prisoners should be forced to repay their debt to society, not be allowed to take even more from society in the form of taxes. Slavery? Get real
@nativemrv19722 But the people in American prisons comitted true crimes. Chinese prisoners can go to prison for many simple things even saying the wrong thing. Big difference there.
@nativemrv19722 An inmate who works and gets paid compared to one that is threatened to do something for nothing is the exact difference between a slave and a regular employee.
@nativemrv19722 Yes, I would love to see a exposee on US private prisons and manditory sentencing and how they target crimes that the young tend ot commit so that they can have a young healthy population to keep them getting a average of $34-$84 a day per prisoner. Do the math for 2.5million people as of this year with 40% of them in private prisons and it is staggering! There are even plans to make them pay for their food d/t State shortfalls. Presently they work for 13cents a day in jail.
@ChemTrailSkys i agree, if your referring to the metaphorical form of slavery of our current economic and sociopolitical theatre. When it comes to ACTUAL slavery though, like the common definition of not having any liberties or freedom and being the property of another person or group then that we are not. Thankfully though we don't have slavery in it's purest form anymore. It is a frightening thought though, that it took so long until the human race cast away with that abominable practice.
@clockworksackboy American prisons is nothing like this. They get feeds 3 times a day, pump some iron. Play some Bball.Relax & read some books to pass the time away.Once in a while American prisoners will have a competition fights between gangs. Also the cells are air conditioned. They don`t do slavery work like their chinese counter parts. It is like being in a Holiday Inn but behind bars. Once release from prison, they commit crimes again, if caught the unlucky ones gets sent back to the big house
So that they work in order to allow them to have the skills to survive ,In order to avoid criminal acts continue to occur in order to make a living after his release

What a surprise.... What I don't get is that such a "awesome" country as the USA can't discover this themself and demand changes with it.

We are all Slaves!

@KlingonSpider ...Just obey, and real slavery follows. Just serve, and there is no slavery because no one is Master.

what about the american prisons?
clockworksackboy 3 months ago
@clockworksackboy That is also a big problem, but please do not even compare the US prison industrial complex with what is happening in China.

@clockworksackboy
Prisoners in the US can either elect to work for very, very little pay (and incentives from the canteens) or opt out. This is mandatory labor.
