I didn't mean to come off as sounding ignorant. I meant to come off sounding apathetic. Honestly I could care less about the whole thing. I love my country, don't get me wrong, but I could care less who the next president will be, 'cause honestly, we're the one's make America AMERICA.
We're the one's that make the decisions every day. The President doesn't tell me where I can or can't live, who I can or can't call, or date, or hang out with, what I can or can't watch on T.V. or listen to on the radio - he really has no say in what I do in my day to day life. That is my reason behind the previous comment. Take it or leave it.
I understand what you mean, and yes, ultimately you do have control of your own day to day actions. However, being apathetic to the political system in this country is just not something I am willing to do, and thus warn people against. It is important to let our leaders know where we stand, so that they can properly lead. Sorry I called you ignorant by the way, didnt really mean it.
The President influences how much your mortgage is, whether you can marry the person you love, whether you'll get mugged on the way home, whether you get paid as much as someone of the opposite gender, the content that gets screened on your T.V. or radio...they may not affect every tiny decision you make, but they certainly influence how you can live your life and will live your life. Yes, it is America's America, but the president is still the most influential person in the country.

The United Nations has proven itself completely incapable of maintaining any occupation force or acting against a genocide of any kind. We need US forces in Darfur... Bill Richardson's answer is the equivalent of saying no to Darfur.
like the way you use the term "occupation force" implying a unilateral decision and fuck what the rest of the world thinks. Typical American rhetoric that serves to promote such a negative image of US on the world stage!
These democrats think they know how to deal with an opponent from outside the machine from Mike Gravel, but I want to know how any one of them could stand up to Ron Paul.
We say "Google Ron Paul" and not "Vote Ron Paul" because how you vote shouldn't depend on how I vote, it should depend on how much our candidates understand.
We represent the _American_ dream. Ron Paul raised 4.38 million on the anniversary of the gunpowder treason on November the 5th, and over 6 million on the anniversary of the Boston tea party on December 16. Look him up and we might just survive this deficit.
Dennis Kucinich is easily the best choice! Just look at his record; with exception of Mike Gravel he is probably the only pure, honest candidate. Who gives a shit if he saw an "unidentified objectt"; the universe is INFINITE- Do you think we're the only ones out here? Bush says god talks to him for christ's sake!?!
Marraige as in what religion?? If youre Christian there's a verse that reads 'man shalt not sleep with another man'... so the bible needs to be rewritten again.
Edward's question wasn't "do you personally oppose gay marriage?" it was "do you think religion should be used to justify opposing gay marriage?" Way for him to change the question entirely. And what the hell was Obama's question ??!! "What is the difference between interracial marriage and gay marriage?" WTF?! And of course Obama got the "interracial" question.
Kucinich is the only choice! Any liberal that says vote for Ron Paul is a closetrepublican Kucinich is the only presidential canadate that has VOTED NO allways! Do not trust any other flip flopper!
I knew that G W Bush was full of shit in the beginning. I, a nobody knew Sadamm didn't have all those chemical weaponns. We need to quit burying our heads in the sand, and only believe those that didn't lie or vote for the war from the beginning!
i think edwards' heart is in the right place but i wish he wouldn't bring his personal strife into the debate. why should he even be having a personal struggle about gay marriage? it's not his job to judge morality... it's his job to make fair laws.
How about the government concerns itself with civil unions and leave "marriage" to the religious institutions? So if you're a man marrying a women or another man and it's done at the court house it's a civil union. If it done in a church it's a marriage. Same civil rights, but the churches can decide their own policies.
Kucinich is the best candidate for the job. He is Clinton, Obama, and Edwards all rolled into one. He supports gay marriage, he never supported the war, he believes immigration laws should be more lenient. I like him. Either way, as long as no one on the Republican side wins the 08 election...We win!
Edwards is a poor choice. He does not believe in Gay Marriage. Mr. Edwards, one does not need to support/believe in something to know it is RIGHT. The Constitutional protections must not be avoided! Study the religious history of marriage. The Catholic Church had nothing to do with marriage until the 15th century. Separate but equal cannot suffice! Leave religious ideas aside. Also, personal belief must not influence protections and rights all receive with the Constitution
1: If you KNEW that something was right you would HAVE to support it. 2: As far as constitutional protections then a "civil union" with equal treatment under the law should suffice. 3: If you're saying it's a "new" for religion to be involved in marriage, that may be, but the Bible has always been clear (albeit that may not matter to you). 4: No one can leave religious ideas aside any more than you could leave gay marriage ideas aside.
if its not man and woman then dont call it "marrige". Come up with an appropriate name. For all of you sensitive people, i wont make a suggestion as to what to call it.
even if the republicans' ideals compromise the liberty of others? or just because you don't feel like sitting down, researching and understanding what MIGHT be better for society and the US as a whole? I acknowledge voting is a personal choice, but it was meant to be used for the better, regardless of parties.
Why did hillary not get to spek on gay rights- she is one of the most gay friendly canidates out there! Furthermore you couldnt even see her campaign you tube video... i feel like shes getting he short end of the stick on this debate
Before the war started Hillary stated that we needed to go into Iraq to prevent their weapons program from gaining ground, now she's using their lack of nuclear weapons as a reason to vote for her? What a load of crap.
PS - Her health care plan failed once before because it costs way too much. Why would it be any different now that we're in debt up to our eyeballs?
not necessarily. Republicans want to lower taxes, Democrats want to keep them the same, but have universal health care. So in the end, it works out anyway
PART 1: no we are not the world police, but where we can help we should. it all boils down to principles- adhering to positive principles for humanity. for us to simply say, "it is not our problem" is an absolutely selfish and narrow minded attitude. what goes on on the other side of the globe does and will affect us in some way, shape or form whether it is directly or indirectly or whether it affects us now or 100 years down the line.
PART2: we are a superpower. and we must use our power for the benefit of humanity. we have influence on how nations deal with one another. true, we cannot be solely expected to clean up other people's mess, but when we help another country, people or nation prosper, then this not only benefits that particular nation, but it can also benefit us in multiple ways- financially being one of them. in all reality, if all nations truly looked after one another from an altruistic place,
PART 3: then ALL of humanity would prosper. and we would not just prosper financially but educationally, materially, health wise and so much more. all this i say is not just some idealistic dream. it is rational reality. instead though, we and other countries are too concerned with building up self-power. we make moves that are fear based. fearing that another will be on top and afraid of the outcome that will come of it. we are not truly concerned for humanity.
PART 4: we are more concerned with global positioning and economic clout and power. should we step in and help Darfur and other places? when we can yes. because it truly is OUR problem. a world problem. humanity's problem. we simply need ALL countries to realize this and when they do and take positive steps to remedy the situation, then we will see true prosperity flourish for mankind.
There's a civil war going on, how would our intervening be anything but political manipulation? We can encourage them to settle their differences without violence and try to help create an atmosphere of diplomacy and fairness, but that's about it. It's not as simple as picking a side and stomping out the opposition. Then you're just a selfish bully.
PART 1: more than likely if the US intervenes then there would be political manipulation because our motives are not truly altruistic. we tend to engage in these "hot zones" only when there is something in it for us. no one is talking about picking sides and stomping out the opposition. we are talking about finding a way to get all nations to cooperate to find a way to end their (dafur's) "civil war" by healthy means. does this mean that we may have to "pick a side" and hold off or engage with
PART 2: those who are purposefully committing genocide in order to stop them? yes. there is no humane justification for allowing such an atrocity as genocide, so engagement may be necessary. sometimes u can't just "encourage" ppl to stop committing genocide. that would be like ppl trying to "encourage" hitler to not kill off the jews. it just ain't happening. again though, this is why we need the cooperation of ALL countries to contribute and help bring about peace in the region.
PART 3: by no means will it be easy. but we must, as a world community, try to offer help. and we as the US should stand up and be a leader and lead for what is just. imo, i don't think our government is truly interested in world peace at this time. it is more interested in holding the #1 power slot in the world. we, as humans, have not truly evolved to a point where we truly look out for ALL of humanity. we're not there yet. in time though god willing. but we can start today.
PART 4: and if we, as the US, takes the lead in doing what is right for "just" reasons and encourage the world to follow us, then this is how we can truly achieve the #1 slot in the world. and this benefits everyone. it benefits the world.
well said, It is immoral to sit by and do nothing, while horrible atrocities occur in the world. We also need to look out for animals and stop animal abuse and cruelty. We need to lead by example not by force, like the iraq war. You can never force some one to be moral they have to choose, and we don't own the world we can't make choices for them.
Thats complete bs that is so outrageous, that video for Hilary Clinton, now don't get me wrong I like Hilary very much and she is one of my top choices but she was for the invasion of Iraq and for the funding of the war in Iraq. That video about there being no nuclear bombs in Iraq was right on may things but completely wrong about Iraq.
At the beginning, they said people were using kids for empathy. What about the question about Africa? Why can't they help themselves?! I'm sick of this "America, save everyone" crap. They have all the resources they need to thrive! WTF?!
I am not Christian at all, however, u obviously had not read the bible. When Jesus came he created a new covenant and expanded on the laws of the old testament, meaning that christians should not have slaves, nor should they kill gay people(even though it says so i in the old testament). When jesus said "love your neighbor" i dont think he meant make them slaves. Know what ur tlaking about before you post ignorant shit.
China pressure Sudan?! China along with Russia are the primary supporters of the Sudanese government. America has already been pounding Sudan and their supporters with diplomacy, it hasnt worked. The EU already sanctions Sudan AND the majority of Darfur prefer peacekeeping by AU forces. Bill Richardson contradicts himself
In all fairness, I think he was really nervous. Its hard talking infront of thousands of people, not to mention that this event is televised to millions more. Give the guy a break.
First of all, I found it inspiring that a traditional-type preacher from the south would openly advocate gay marriage. And please don't accuse anyone of being an idiot when you can't get the usage of the word "hear" right. ;)
zzbullan hit the nail on the head. the whole problem with marriage is the word itself, it doesnt denote civil union between two human beings it suggests RELGIONIOUS binding between TWO CHRISTIANS/CATHOLICS/GOD PEOPLE. change the word and marriage, a religious binding is out of US law, the way all religion should've been out of US law.
how bout this to everyone who believes in freedom, let gays get marriage. to those who want to opress a minority, we will change the name of marriage to lets say garriage. now its not marriage and you can stop complaining, alright problem solved.
oh my god, great answer! why do ppl get so wound up and frustrated by problems that don't affect them? People who commit heinous crimes get away with it but ppl who don't hurt anyone are subject to scorn! for god's sake, live and let live!
Why is gay marriage such a prevailing issue in the elections?!sn't marriage a bond established by religion? It should be up to religions to decide their rules on their beliefs. The government should then acknowlege and accept that decision. This topic is irrelevant to the elections. We should take a step back and look at the Constitution party, Fairtax, and even global warming.
Yeah, it's an irrelevant distraction issue, but it's not a religious issue. If there were no rights that went with marriage, I'd say ok whatev, but this is a legal issue as much as it is religious. I'd like to see my hubby in the hospital if he's dyin, thanks much. But it is a distractor issue and it's not up to the Presidents at all.
not neccessarily. Are you saying that poor people are sick just becuase they are poor people, or is it that poor people are sicker becuase they dont have access to healthcare? You arent born poor, geneticly speaking. I see what you are saying for people that are on disability for instance who dont pay taxes on thier income but require more medical care. Thats a good point.
there is no such thing as free health care..what u think is free health care is actually other people paying for your infirmities..now this sounds like a legitimate idea except that the people with the most infirmities also happen to be the people who would contribute the least to the health care budget
Why does America always have to go "peace keeping"!?
We are so much in debt because of this "peace keeping" crap. It is not America's duty to take care of the world. Our responsibility is American people. Why can't these guys defend themselves? Fucking permanently!!!!!!!!!
Lol I dunno about permanently. I mean we do have to get involved in foreign affairs sometimes, Pheonix. But you're right we can't always be the world's police. But dude..."endowed by our creator" was in the Declaration of Independance, not the Constitution.
Hitler Clinton pushed for the war! Doesn't anyone know that? She signed the Patriot Act 1 & 2, the Military Commitions Act, she was for looking for WMD's. She is such a flippin' LIAR!!!!!
Wrong, Mr. Obama, our rights are "...Endowed by the Creator" not by the government. That is the problem in this country, people actually believe that the 'Almighty Government' gives us our rights. It is the Creator insured by the Constitution. The further away we get from the Constitution the less freedom we will have.
My civic rights aren't assigned to me by your imaginary friend. And the Constitution was written more than 200 years ago, you don't think its possibly worth reexamining it? I mean, the framers were smart, but they could not have forseen the assault rifle, the F-22 Raptor, or debate via interweb. I think its worth revisiting a document that doesn't have a clause regarding privacy but does have one about quartering British soldiers.
Anyone that opposes REPARATIONS for BLACKS IN AMERICA, I would have a hard time believing that they care anything about BLACKS in the SUDAN. OOOOOOHH< so the problem with REPARATIONS is that these BLACKS are not FAR ENOUGH AWAY........LOL.....Hypocrites
Darfur is the scapegoat for REGIME change in SUDAN as well as all TRUE MUSLIM nations. Iran is on the hitlist too. Any that wont play ball with america.
How about we worry about our own people that don't have homes or that have been removed from their home dew to natural disaster first, before we worry about others.
I believe the homeless are homeless because they choose to be <get off your butt and work> As for those who's homes are destroyed, they always act over victimized, I've had it happen, If you still have your job you can live.
skullbreaker...as it were? I'll level with you. Some homeless people are there because they're lazy. But buddy, imagine that you were born into a poor family, never owned a house, and at a young age you made the idiot decision to commit a crime. Be it robbery or fraud, almost anything like that.
Then you're sent off to prison, do your time, and when you come out, regardless if you're "reformed or not" *prisons are another issue* you can't get a job Cont: because you got yourself a nice little record. So there you are, slang the dope again and risk three strikes *california law* or maybe you end up on the street.
And then someone like who, who no offense, I don't think has thought the issue through fully, says fuck you get a job as he walks by. I'm 20, suburbanite, educated, middle class, but I have no illusions that there are a hundred different reasons people are on the street. Mental illness, drug addiction, some divorce lawyer fucked them till it was raw. Think your comment over a little man, with all due properties.
Try talking to some homeless people. For those of you who "wanna my dime to buy another brothers wine" buy the dude a goddam subway six inch for gods sake.
Yes permanant UN peace keeping troops. Well said. Genocide is the most important issue the world stage must address. Before it happens. Yes we have the technology to know where it will happen next. Act.
I haven't decided on who to vote for yet. I respect Obama and think he has some nice ideas but I died laughing at his "seperate but equal" gay rights answer. Come on, no one else caught it? lol.
drink up your propaganda and think your vote counts, remember the last two elections have been proven to be rigged,
Senator Mao Clinton will be put into office, behold the North American Union, FEMA CAMPS, National IDs, Verichips for your universal healthcare, enjoy your orwellian demise
i think if there were less candidates, richardson would be ahead of edwards. he's a serious politician, with more experience in an executive position than anyone (correct me if i'm wrong there), and is fairly easy to like. but he has a lot of lower-tier competition and he can't seem to break out of it. i like him too, but i would love to see a ron paul v. mike gravel election.
Bill Richardson is one of the most qualified people running for president. He is an exceptional person and he truly knows the way the world works and has the strength to get it done. Though no one has my guaranteed vote , so far Bill Richardson has my support.
You need to read before you go running your mouth. There is biological evidence that now proves that homosexuality is affected by in utero physiology. Dumbass.
If civil union and gay marriage are really offer the same rights and benefits, then why call them different things? It's like calling Obama articulate yet calling Edwards eloquent. I hope SOMEONE gets this.
marriage is a term used by religious institutions and may people believe that "marriage" is only for a man and a woman. Civil Unions offer an opportunity to give same sex couples equal rights under the law without alianating religous voters
If civil union and gay marriage are really offer the same rights and benefits, then why call them different things? It's like calling Obama articulate yet calling Edwards eloquent. I hope SOMEONE gets this.
i totally agree. I can't see how those things are different. I feel like candidates are spinning their topics to the audience and it's making me really dizzy.
For once I agree with Obama. It should be up to individual churches or denominations to decide on gay marriage. End of story. Its none of the governments damn business.
I believe that the government should only sponsor civil unions for all. Marraige can be legally recognized in a church, but marraige should not be a government role. If the churches won't marry you, then the government should give you all the rights of a married couple, and protect them from hate crimes.
can i have a ticket with fluffy and lawrence on it? i'll work for free. EXACTLY: the government aspect of marriage is economic/civil/etc. so call it a union. let churches or other groups confer marriages. it's not a 'right,' the right is equal protection under the law, which civil unions would accomplish.
good job, guys. spend the next few minutes talking about the issue that helped defeat the democrats in 2004. who needs to talk about iraq or universal health care?

i think edwards' heart is in the right place but i wish he wouldn't bring his personal strife into the debate. why should he even be having a personal struggle about gay marriage? it's not his job to judge morality... it's his job to make fair laws.
profmissmelly 4 years ago 2
How about the government concerns itself with civil unions and leave "marriage" to the religious institutions? So if you're a man marrying a women or another man and it's done at the court house it's a civil union. If it done in a church it's a marriage. Same civil rights, but the churches can decide their own policies.

Dontbustthecrust 4 years ago
Kucinich is the best candidate for the job. He is Clinton, Obama, and Edwards all rolled into one. He supports gay marriage, he never supported the war, he believes immigration laws should be more lenient. I like him. Either way, as long as no one on the Republican side wins the 08 election...We win!
Boska2880 4 years ago
Edwards is a poor choice. He does not believe in Gay Marriage. Mr. Edwards, one does not need to support/believe in something to know it is RIGHT. The Constitutional protections must not be avoided! Study the religious history of marriage. The Catholic Church had nothing to do with marriage until the 15th century. Separate but equal cannot suffice! Leave religious ideas aside. Also, personal belief must not influence protections and rights all receive with the Constitution
Junicj 4 years ago
1: If you KNEW that something was right you would HAVE to support it. 2: As far as constitutional protections then a "civil union" with equal treatment under the law should suffice. 3: If you're saying it's a "new" for religion to be involved in marriage, that may be, but the Bible has always been clear (albeit that may not matter to you). 4: No one can leave religious ideas aside any more than you could leave gay marriage ideas aside.

We arent the world police, especially for someone else's problem in Darfur. But the UN is I guess so whatever.
cjames926 4 years ago
PART 1: no we are not the world police, but where we can help we should. it all boils down to principles- adhering to positive principles for humanity. for us to simply say, "it is not our problem" is an absolutely selfish and narrow minded attitude. what goes on on the other side of the globe does and will affect us in some way, shape or form whether it is directly or indirectly or whether it affects us now or 100 years down the line.
seetv569 4 years ago
PART2: we are a superpower. and we must use our power for the benefit of humanity. we have influence on how nations deal with one another. true, we cannot be solely expected to clean up other people's mess, but when we help another country, people or nation prosper, then this not only benefits that particular nation, but it can also benefit us in multiple ways- financially being one of them. in all reality, if all nations truly looked after one another from an altruistic place,
seetv569 4 years ago
PART 3: then ALL of humanity would prosper. and we would not just prosper financially but educationally, materially, health wise and so much more. all this i say is not just some idealistic dream. it is rational reality. instead though, we and other countries are too concerned with building up self-power. we make moves that are fear based. fearing that another will be on top and afraid of the outcome that will come of it. we are not truly concerned for humanity.
seetv569 4 years ago
PART 4: we are more concerned with global positioning and economic clout and power. should we step in and help Darfur and other places? when we can yes. because it truly is OUR problem. a world problem. humanity's problem. we simply need ALL countries to realize this and when they do and take positive steps to remedy the situation, then we will see true prosperity flourish for mankind.
seetv569 4 years ago
There's a civil war going on, how would our intervening be anything but political manipulation? We can encourage them to settle their differences without violence and try to help create an atmosphere of diplomacy and fairness, but that's about it. It's not as simple as picking a side and stomping out the opposition. Then you're just a selfish bully.
aluminumpenguin8 4 years ago
PART 1: more than likely if the US intervenes then there would be political manipulation because our motives are not truly altruistic. we tend to engage in these "hot zones" only when there is something in it for us. no one is talking about picking sides and stomping out the opposition. we are talking about finding a way to get all nations to cooperate to find a way to end their (dafur's) "civil war" by healthy means. does this mean that we may have to "pick a side" and hold off or engage with
seetv569 4 years ago
PART 2: those who are purposefully committing genocide in order to stop them? yes. there is no humane justification for allowing such an atrocity as genocide, so engagement may be necessary. sometimes u can't just "encourage" ppl to stop committing genocide. that would be like ppl trying to "encourage" hitler to not kill off the jews. it just ain't happening. again though, this is why we need the cooperation of ALL countries to contribute and help bring about peace in the region.
seetv569 4 years ago
PART 3: by no means will it be easy. but we must, as a world community, try to offer help. and we as the US should stand up and be a leader and lead for what is just. imo, i don't think our government is truly interested in world peace at this time. it is more interested in holding the #1 power slot in the world. we, as humans, have not truly evolved to a point where we truly look out for ALL of humanity. we're not there yet. in time though god willing. but we can start today.
seetv569 4 years ago
PART 4: and if we, as the US, takes the lead in doing what is right for "just" reasons and encourage the world to follow us, then this is how we can truly achieve the #1 slot in the world. and this benefits everyone. it benefits the world.
seetv569 4 years ago
well said, It is immoral to sit by and do nothing, while horrible atrocities occur in the world. We also need to look out for animals and stop animal abuse and cruelty. We need to lead by example not by force, like the iraq war. You can never force some one to be moral they have to choose, and we don't own the world we can't make choices for them.
leviathanken 4 years ago
Thats complete bs that is so outrageous, that video for Hilary Clinton, now don't get me wrong I like Hilary very much and she is one of my top choices but she was for the invasion of Iraq and for the funding of the war in Iraq. zzbullan hit the nail on the head. the whole problem with marriage is the word itself, it doesnt denote civil union between two human beings it suggests RELGIONIOUS binding between TWO CHRISTIANS/CATHOLICS/GOD PEOPLE. change the word and marriage, a religious binding is out of US law, the way all religion should've been out of US law.
BurningBright87 4 years ago 3
how bout this to everyone who believes in freedom, let gays get marriage. to those who want to opress a minority, we will change the name of marriage to lets say garriage. now its not marriage and you can stop complaining, alright problem solved.

Why is gay marriage such a prevailing issue in the elections?!sn't marriage a bond established by religion? It should be up to religions to decide their rules on their beliefs. The government should then acknowlege and accept that decision. This topic is irrelevant to the elections. We should take a step back and look at the Constitution party, Fairtax, and even global warming.
firebat01 4 years ago
What about those people that don't have a religion?
Also, if gay marriage is illegal by law, how can religions endorse it without being prosecuted?
actorlady 4 years ago
Yeah, it's an irrelevant distraction issue, but it's not a religious issue. If there were no rights that went with marriage, I'd say ok whatev, but this is a legal issue as much as it is religious. I'd like to see my hubby in the hospital if he's dyin, thanks much. But it is a distractor issue and it's not up to the Presidents at all.

not neccessarily. Are you saying that poor people are sick just becuase they are poor people, or is it that poor people are sicker becuase they dont have access to healthcare? PheonixHeart1974 4 years ago
Lol I dunno about permanently. I mean we do have to get involved in foreign affairs sometimes, Pheonix. But you're right we can't always be the world's police. But dude..."endowed by our creator" was in the Declaration of Independance, not the Constitution.

PheonixHeart1974 4 years ago
Wrong, Mr. Obama, our rights are "...Endowed by the Creator" not by the government. That is the problem in this country, people actually believe that the 'Almighty Government' gives us our rights. It is the Creator insured by the Constitution. The further away we get from the Constitution the less freedom we will have.
PheonixHeart1974 4 years ago
My civic rights aren't assigned to me by your imaginary friend. And the Constitution was written more than 200 years ago, you don't think its possibly worth reexamining it? I believe that the government should only sponsor civil unions for all. Marraige can be legally recognized in a church, but marraige should not be a government role.
