marriage is a term used by religious institutions and may people believe that "marriage" is only for a man and a woman. Civil Unions offer an opportunity to give same sex couples equal rights under the law without alianating religous voters

Same-sex couples enjoy all the rights of a married couple under Obama's civil unions. At that point, marriage is simply a label.

I believe that the government should only sponsor civil unions for all. Marraige can be legally recognized in a church, but marraige should not be a government role. If the churches won't marry you, then the government should give you all the rights of a married couple, and protect them from hate crimes.
