In my school, we are doing this thing called The 80s musical and me and my friend are doing his episode! (but in our own words) Heres a sneak peek of what we are doing
That's not the original theme song. There was a song by The Waitresses called "Square Pegs" originally. This is the theme they came up with because the record company wouldn't give the the rights to the song for the song when the show went into syndication.
Pretty sure this is the opening credits and that The Waitresses song played over the closing credits but I will admit that I am old and, mostly, bat shit crazy from senility at this point so I could be wrong.
@thegirl44 I'll bet anything you're 41 just like me and every other Square Pegs fan. And you're perfectly correct about the theme songs. Voice over and instrumental to open and the Waitresses at the end. It was for a brief moment the perfect show.
Not when this aired, no. In the early 80's we we're living in a community that was 4 hours short of the tree line so we only got what our huge antennea pulled in off of the air waves. We had cable when we moved back to California in 1988, which would have been about when I saw this show in reruns.
If you notice the little mop bucket and mop in the hallway of this video, I kid you not, belonged too my dad they wanted to put it in the opening theme scene
Yeah Jami Gertz and Sarah Jessica both have very good careers. I always hasd a crush on that Jamie oh and Amy linker too, turns out she is two years older than me, lol...what hottie
Always liked this show because it focused on thing that were really going on in the lives of kids in that time. Cool stuff.
Maybe because the ratings were less than acceptable.Still,I did hear rumors that a few of the cast were on drugs, which might have led to the early cancellation.
I am grateful that Sarah Jessica Parker,Tracy Nelson,Merrit Buttrick and Jami Gertz got other roles and furthered their careers.
A few observations: a) I see that the opening is almost reminiscent, in its hand-tinted, stop-motion production, of the fourth and fifth seasons of "Saturday Night Live" (one of whose writers was "SP" creator-producer Anne Beatts), and b) Sarah Jessica Parker seemed the only one to go on to bigger, better and more lasting things (though Tracy Nelson later was in "Father Dowling Mysteries" and Jami Gertz didn't necessarily do all that shabbily either).
This was shown here in the UK.

Actually, I'm six years younger but I'm a Canadian and the show didn't air here until 5 years after it aired in the States.
Here in Canada....we tend to be a little slow, eh :).

when I saw in syndication, the prints were dark and sound was a little below...
TEMPmichaelhansen 1 year ago
@nyxxxx I was wondering where the song had went! I was bummed to hear it gone when it shortly returned to syndication but quickly removed.

Brought "Valley-speak" to the forefront of the American lexicon. The show was canceled after only one year.

nothing wrong with POPULAR, if you have nothing against blandness haha...the only good thing to come out of it was the character Mary Cherry
hahahefication 2 years ago
The Waitresses, who did the theme song, are from Kent, Ohio Too. Not far from where that "Heathers" movie was based in OH.

It was one of those show that was on, then off, then on again. But I think the writers strike, at that time, killed it.
