Many younger students seem to think that “sensitive playing” is aided (or implied) by body language. I find it annoying to see musicians bending & smiling & grimacing. And from the standpoint of his promoters it’s good business. And I think we all dislike the smell of that. Could he make a career for himself without telling us how to feel about his playing? If he had Kempff’s demeanor would he have a career? Fair or not his flamboyant body language represents a lack of authenticity.
he plays w/ a lot of hutzpah, but like damn dude, sometimes you need to learn to have a little bit of control over your musical impulses. otherwise, it ceases to be art. it turns into recess.
All you guys are just busy mocking Lang Lang, when he does the only thing you guys don't, to have fun. I agree, Lang Lang's interpretation isn't the best, but it's completely immature to judge him by his facial expressions. Music is meant to be heard, not watched. So close your eyes, and listen again.
AMERICAN Richard Kastle proved that American exceptionalism is present in classical music, as well as the usual stuff, keeping the world safe from terrorists. His CD outsold the RUSSIAN and CANADIAN acts. CHINESE pianist Lang Lang has a lot of press and sales, but he plays the easier vesion. It doesn't count as the same accomlishment.
The fact is that the USA produced the first recording artist in history who could play the octave ending the way Liszt intended.

The reason why people hate Lang Lang is that they take his exaggerated motions for pride. I can see why this is the case. However, you cannot deny his talent. The interpretation is brilliant, showcasing a lot of emotion and technical skill.
Funny how many people doesn't like his style of playing. I wonder how this piece evolved? Oh, I got it. Horowitz added a few variations to Liszt's original piece. So, for the purists out there: get a life. No one knows how a piece of piano music is suppose to be played because only the original composer would know it. Those who follow has to interpret what the original intend of the composer was. And Lang Lang is not a purist. He likes to add technical difficulty to already technical piece.

@bieto2002 i guess you are absolutely wrong about him. Lang Lang has his own character that many outsiders do not know. Ignorant freaks criticise his playing - which i don't know why. But some pieces i hear he play with very rich chinese culture in it.
litonsim: it is this simple. this guy is capable of great technique and expressionism, but what has been driving him to play with ridicule and act as a cloud on the piano? i do not care what character he has; i only care if he makes sense in his playing and expression. he can have his madness at home, but i want to see him drag in on the piano like that. how do you understand his character, by the way?

Great technician, not such a hot musician. His face (& sound) say "look at me, don't you think I'm FABulous??"
It's impressive, but I'm a bit sick of hearing impressive - I want to hear beauty and passion. Sadly, our world is losing it's beauty and passion, and consequently, so is our art.
if he sux why has he played in the 07 Nobel Prize concert in Stockholm, or play with Herbie Handcock, get a spot in Carnegie Hall, or play in the 08 Olympics?
I'm sure many other artists like the Jonas Brothers perform at a lot of very important events that they don't deserve to be performing at, so your argument isn't very valid. Nice try.
However, the Jonas Brothers are in a completely different bracket of music. We're talking about someone who has worked extremely hard, who has been recognised for being brilliant, who has inspired many kids around the world to play the piano, and who wants to show how fun playing these pieces can be!
No, he didn't really work that hard, China just made him extremely popular and he's only been recognized for "being brilliant" because "brilliant" to the world today is "how fast can he play without having to pause or restart?" If you want somebody who's worked extremely hard, then you listen to Richter, Bronfman, Horowitz, Cortot, Rubinstein, Emanuel Ax, Arrau, etc. And really, music is supposed to be fun? I suggest you listen to Chopin Piano Concertos or Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony.
@ reaper1545: i think it is time you became less naive about this world: it is pretty much a place where politics and money have a huge power. Politics and money! They are the things behind that get Bang Bang to such spots. I can't think of any other reason other than these, since his playing is really damaging to classical music.
@bieto2002 It seems as if you don't know anything about Lang Lang. He was unknown in the US and had a job as a secondary pianist. One day, the main pianist got sick on the day of the performance, and he was called up to perform. He gave a stellar performance, and that was what caused him to become so famous. Please learn about subjects you are speaking on so you don't seem like an idiot. Also, I don't see how he is damaging to classical music. Please enlighten me.
@bieto2002 I see, I am brainwashed because I know how Lang Lang became famous, while you thought it was because he somehow bribed his way into Carnegie Hall with money and his father is some sort of powerful politician. I would hope that you see the hypocrisy in your comment. I invite you to look up at least some basic history about Lang Lang before you speak. And no, Lang Lang isn't my famous pianist. I'm just sick of people who know nothing about piano bitching about a perfectly fine pianist.
I won't say he's not a good pianist at all...but a musician, as any other artist, expresses himself through his medium which in his case is the piano. It seems to me like he has a huge ego problem and it just comes out as piano rape. Basically the only part I like is at 3:23. But at 3:25 I already wanna punch him in the face.
Lang Lang has great technique. But he has a terrible ego. He may not show it in interviews, but when he plays, all he does is over-exaggerate by pulling back tempos to the point of madness, and do these stupid faces and stuff that would make the audience laugh, but not at the music, at HIM. He brings all the attention to himself rather than the music he plays. His playing is also very dull. I've tried to like Lang Lang, but I just can't do it. I prefer others like Bronfman or Horowitz.
Why would he even NEED to keep people awake in the first place? Horowitz, Richter, and Rubinstein sure didn't need to, most of the time they were VERY serious on stage, hardly ever moved a muscle. The audiences they performed for were so moved by their performances, so moved that of course they were awake, because they were listening to the actual music they produced. Lang Lang produces no music, which is why, without the crazy movements, people would fall asleep.
lang lang has something called youthfullness, and something that i think more classical musicians need is to move with the music physically not just emotionally.
Why? What's the point? Moving like crazy doesn't change the way you play. Pianists don't need it, they just do it to make it more of a "show", sadly. Kissin sort of over-exaggerates a bit, too, but not extremely like Lang Lang. All it does is put the attention on you, like I said.
In fact, Beethoven's advice for piano is first: push your fingers down, second: refrain from doing any unnecessary movements, and third: make the instrument sing.
His interpretation sucks! With this style of playing no one has a control on tempos. By such a style he neglects all delicacy of notes. Definitely he is talented. But he is not a "perfect" pianist.
After reading comments about many Lang Lang's videos, it seemed that so many people are conceptually orthodox. I guess almost all of us are orthodox in some ways at some point of our lives because we are human. However, to me, it is a little freaky yet still boring to face with ideas that are spontaneously tranditionalist.
we wouldn't say we are orthodox. we just want to see sense and musicality in a pianist's playing. think about this. if you eat cheese and mustard together, you will vomit, won't you? the same here!
I cant believe this is going over the heads of so many of you, its not meant to be like the original, hes slotting different sections ontop of each other which is very clever since it actually works, its just a shame that the recording is so bad
bare in mind thousands in the entire world is nothing and im one of the few people to not go with what others think. if you actually listened to it as music and ignore what he looks like or who he is and when u compare this to other young pianists, you will find lang lang's playing obsolete
p.s. when u going around calling people names, YOU make a huge ass of yourself
Hahah, read your comment, so true, made me laugh for ages. I've played this piece for about six years now, and he simplifies it, makes mistakes and simply destroys it bit by bit without any regard for musicality or composer's intent.
God what a complete MESS you idiots saying this is amazing probably have no musical education whatsoever , not to mention mistakes in ever OTHER MEASURE of the entire piece , he is completley overrated
He sounded like a poor little child who had practised for hours and hours and he wanted to rush it through the last time he plays, so that he can go out and play.
Guys- he sounds better than Horowitz there! (Not that Horowitz wasn't good, but it's a real stunning performance.) Hello!? How many of you cleaned your ears recently? He sounds great!
No, dear, Horowitz wasn't so volgar and ridiculous. Pleas don't let's merge chocolate with...something other. Public was laughing...yes, this is the right dimension of LL's musicality and musical deepness.
no good interpretation he has good skills with his fingers i think but i like the performans of Maxim Myrcra much more, because he puts a lotta more feelings in it and that makes it sound much better and so on. I study the same piece at the moment
I've practiced the have of the whole piece. It's so difficult to play:D really it is:D And i can't play it as fast.
first of all he has been playing for years and years and years and second of all, did you take the audio of this piece and close your eyes and listen to it and then do the same with a cziffra interpretation; you would hear a HUGE difference

We're talking about someone who has worked extremely hard, who has been recognised for being brilliant, who has inspired many kids around the world to play the piano, and who wants to show how fun playing these pieces can be!
VVHBM 2 years ago

I can't think of any other reason other than these, since his playing is really damaging to classical music.
bieto2002 2 years ago
@bieto2002 It seems as if you don't know anything about Lang Lang. He was unknown in the US and had a job as a secondary pianist. One day, the main pianist got sick on the day of the performance, and he was called up to perform. He gave a stellar performance, and that was what caused him to become so famous. Please learn about subjects you are speaking on so you don't seem like an idiot. Also, I don't see how he is damaging to classical music. Please enlighten me.
Chuckles543 1 year ago
@Chuckles543 i can't enlighten you now. you are already brainwashed. get the bugs out of your mind and then talk with me.
bieto2002 1 year ago
@bieto2002 I see, I am brainwashed because I know how Lang Lang became famous, while you thought it was because he somehow bribed his way into Carnegie Hall with money and his father is some sort of powerful politician. I would hope that you see the hypocrisy in your comment. I invite you to look up at least some basic history about Lang Lang before you speak. And no, Lang Lang isn't my famous pianist. I'm just sick of people who know nothing about piano bitching about a perfectly fine pianist.
Chuckles543 1 year ago 3
@Chuckles543 im with you! i'd like to see all the people who are slagging him off play even half as good as this!

I won't say he's not a good pianist at all...but a musician, as any other artist, expresses himself through his medium which in his case is the piano. It seems to me like he has a huge ego problem and it just comes out as piano rape. Basically the only part I like is at 3:23. But at 3:25 I already wanna punch him in the face.
sansewai 2 years ago
His music has no beauty!!!!!!!!
mikeandvarda 2 years ago 3
Lang Lang has great technique. But he has a terrible ego. He may not show it in interviews, but when he plays, all he does is over-exaggerate by pulling back tempos to the point of madness, and do these stupid faces and stuff that would make the audience laugh, but not at the music, at HIM. He brings all the attention to himself rather than the music he plays. His playing is also very dull. I've tried to like Lang Lang, but I just can't do it. I prefer others like Bronfman or Horowitz.
mario54671 2 years ago 4
this is actually the best description of him ive ever heard
nmbanana 2 years ago
maybe he does that. not because of his ego. but to bring something different. and maybe to keep people awake at stuff like that.
reaper1545 2 years ago
Why would he even NEED to keep people awake in the first place? Horowitz, Richter, and Rubinstein sure didn't need to, most of the time they were VERY serious on stage, hardly ever moved a muscle. The audiences they performed for were so moved by their performances, so moved that of course they were awake, because they were listening to the actual music they produced. Lang Lang produces no music, which is why, without the crazy movements, people would fall asleep.
mario54671 2 years ago
lang lang has something called youthfullness, and something that i think more classical musicians need is to move with the music physically not just emotionally.
reaper1545 2 years ago
I want you to start living as a gay woman.
mysticxingjing16 2 years ago
Lang Lang is only doing one of those things.

much better than horowiz
lober777 2 years ago
His interpretation sucks! With this style of playing no one has a control on tempos. By such a style he neglects all delicacy of notes. Definitely he is talented. But he is not a "perfect" pianist.

completely agree with you! :D

After reading comments about many Lang Lang's videos, it seemed that so many people are conceptually orthodox. I guess almost all of us are orthodox in some ways at some point of our lives because we are human. However, to me, it is a little freaky yet still boring to face with ideas that are spontaneously tranditionalist.

shimotsumanominamo 2 years ago
um is it "wish that i had"? Would someone please help me with my English. Thanks ^^
shimotsumanominamo 2 years ago
we wouldn't say we are orthodox. we just want to see sense and musicality in a pianist's playing. think about this. if you eat cheese and mustard together, you will vomit, won't you? the same here!

do you know what excerpt this is?

I cant believe this is going over the heads of so many of you, its not meant to be like the original, hes slotting different sections ontop of each other which is very clever since it actually works, its just a shame that the recording is so bad

Banana. I assume that you think that you could improve on his performance.
As soon as you are recongized all over the world and have thousands of fans, should you attempt to critcize.
To sum you up in one word "Asshole!"
Reddotisthebullseye 2 years ago
bare in mind thousands in the entire world is nothing and im one of the few people to not go with what others think. if you actually listened to it as music and ignore what he looks like or who he is and when u compare this to other young pianists, you will find lang lang's playing obsolete
p.s. when u going around calling people names, YOU make a huge ass of yourself

hitler was also recognized around the world and had thousands of fans but that doesn't make him any good

Hahah, read your comment, so true, made me laugh for ages. I've played this piece for about six years now, and he simplifies it, makes mistakes and simply destroys it bit by bit without any regard for musicality or composer's intent.

is that why hes the famous one between you two lol

he raped liszt with his performance! over and over

God what a complete MESS you idiots saying this is amazing probably have no musical education whatsoever , not to mention mistakes in ever OTHER MEASURE of the entire piece , he is completley overrated
ChineseMuscleBoy 2 years ago 2
He sounded like a poor little child who had practised for hours and hours and he wanted to rush it through the last time he plays, so that he can go out and play.

Guys- he sounds better than Horowitz there! (Not that Horowitz wasn't good, but it's a real stunning performance.) Hello!? How many of you cleaned your ears recently? He sounds great!
BarbaraPloyer333 2 years ago
No, dear, Horowitz wasn't so volgar and ridiculous. Pleas don't let's merge chocolate with...something other. Public was laughing...yes, this is the right dimension of LL's musicality and musical deepness.
TheEngraver 2 years ago 2
no good interpretation he has good skills with his fingers i think but i like the performans of Maxim Myrcra much more, because he puts a lotta more feelings in it and that makes it sound much better and so on. I study the same piece at the moment
I've practiced the have of the whole piece. It's so difficult to play:D really it is:D And i can't play it as fast.
thesynthmaster92 2 years ago
Come on guys... I´m sure his interpretation was supposed to be different or funny. So don´t judge him on that single piece.

2:44-2:56 would kill liszt if he was still alive

Come on, he sounds great!
People should stop harassing poor Lang Lang. You have to admit it, the man has talent.
BarbaraPloyer333 2 years ago
first of all he has been playing for years and years and years and second of all, did you take the audio of this piece and close your eyes and listen to it and then do the same with a cziffra interpretation; you would hear a HUGE difference
nmbanana 2 years ago 2
and if you truly listened to his interpretation, you would be disgusted
nmbanana 2 years ago
was this a serious performance at all? O_O. it was really bad
also, sometimes i can't tell if he's having a spasm or if he's playing
and yeah based on previous trends, imma get thumbs downed a ton...

horowitz loses to berezovsky. horowitz might have been more creative, but berezovsky just destroys horowitz in technique and clarity.
