  • Screw the Von Trapp family I want to be a part of this family the Smith family, Maria Von Trapp has nothing on Ester Smith.

  • @cinderelmo lol~ com’on, they deserve equal amount of credits ;)

  • @whateverworks555 Well ha ha come on I just saw MMISL for the first time and I LOVE JUDY GARLAND!!! My mom resembles her doe eyes etc. I like this better than the sound of music so yeah i'd rather be a part of this family the Smith family than the Von Trapp's. Lol ha ha the sound of music is too long.

  • @cinderelmo agreed :-) i love this movie & want to be part of this family & ester smith is a great character portrayed by an amazing actress & singer! <3

  • Isn't it amazing? This song is more than 60 years old and it still brings tears to people's eyes...

  • Thank you Judy.

  • whoa! what an extremely sad, desperate child! something needs to be done to console her, to bring her back to a more objective reality. she must have been lost in the shuffle.

    (that's a message to today's parents who don't respect their child's emotions)

  • HEY its Christmas now. Have yourselfs a merry little Christmas :)

  • Only Judy can sing this song. I hate the other covers.

  • The part when she massacres all the snow people is pretty sad : (

  • I have just finished watching this movie with my daughter, a truely timeless classic :))

  • Tootie going crazy in the snow breaks my heart every single time. Judy, as always, was flawless.

  • I still love watching this scene around Christmas time. Nobody can touch Judy Garland's performance of this song. The scene afterwards touches me every time.

  • Wonderfully made film in every respect. Another scene I love from that film is the Halloween in the neighborhood. He had a talent of bringing out the best in the actors and the colors are so rich.

Another great Minnelli film is "The Long Long Trailer" with Lucy and Dezi. They were in top form and they both really shine. There's hardly anybody else in the film!

  • My granddaughter Lys and mine fave movie. We sure have enjoyed this through the years.

Thanks for sending me this site Lyssie. love Grama

  • THE MOST WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS SONG YOU EVER HEARD AND WITH A WONDERFUL JUDY GARLAND VOICE.

  • This song is awesome, but the little girl is a little brat

  • @jjrouse She's five, give her a break!

  • Comment removed

  • Wonderful to know the history of not only the song, but of the movie as well. Thank you.

  • "the dead ones, too." God, I love this clip. It's so painful to watch, because I've so many wonderful, and so many painful Christmases in my life. I imagine all of us have.

  • One of my favorite movies and definitely one of my favorite Christmas songs!

  • This really is just the best version of this song in existence.

  • That is when actors had talent!!

  • She was amazing.

  • Great movie! : )

  • Oh good lord ... have you heard what that apparently nice (but patently deluded) little man, Chris Martin, from "Coldplay" has done to this? Judy ... come back ... you never did anything for which you needed to be forgiven in the first place ... but come back ... all is, well, not what it should be anymore!!! And you boy, are we missing your talent ...

  • I love this movie and Judy Garland beautiful voice makes me tear up when I hear this song.

  • I love this clip. <3

  • I can only think of the valiant men and women watching this either in a hastily set up USO tent in France a few miles behind the lines, or deep in the bowels of a carrier in the Pacific under constant threat of Kamakazi attack.

These, and a thousand other places they fought to protect us. How this must have resonated with these heros.

My deepest regard for giving us this extended, always moving, magic scene.

  • No one can and ever will be as good as Judy Garland

  • i swear. her voice is FLAWLESS

  • To Hines221...Thank you for your comments about the lyrical revisions (Original vs. Modern), and reminding us of the Song/Movie release (1944 & WWII still raging). Ralph Blane wrote the music, with lyrics written by Hugh Martin. We tend to forget how current events of the day, do inspire or affect the Creative Process. Isn't it ironic...the Generation of 1944 (and since the beginning of time) wanted the same things as the Generation of 2011..."WORLD PEACE".

  • @UncleOafie

Um. That sentiment (WORLD PEACE) isn't motivated by altruism as you may naively assume. It is motivated by the oldest and most powerful of emotions: self interest. Or as you may know it thru the popular press, greed. Merry Christmas

  • No one can sing this song like Judy. What a film this was...absolutely mesmerizing.

  • I would like to know who the people that dislike this are, and why. Seriously, I don't understand.

  • Poor child looks like she's really distressed!

  • This movie makes me cry every time I watch it. I love Judy's beautiful voice.

  • this always makes me tear up

  • Compare the lyrics of this to the 'modern' version. This is darker. Original: "Next year all our troubles . . ." vs. Modern: "From now on our troubles . . .". and, darker, Original: "Someday soon we all will be together, if the fates allow; until then we'll have to muddle through somehow." vs Modern: "Through the years we all will be together, if the fates allow, hang a shining star upon the highest bough". Don't forget, this movie was released in 1944 and WWII was still raging.

  • @hines221

Hugh Martin can be forgiven for surrendering to the zeitgeist of 44. Garland, Drake and Minnelli demanded the lyrics be changed.

Have yourself a merry little Christmas, it may be your last,

Next year we may all be living in the past

Have yourself a merry little Christmas, pop that champagne cork,

Next year we will all be living in New York.

No good times like the olden days, happy golden days of yore,

Faithful friends who were dear to us, will be near to us no more.

  • @hines221 I just read on wikipedia that the original lyrics were even more depressing, they changed the lyrics to these.

  • @hines221 Woah, after reading your comment, I just realised all the lyrics are very relevant to WWII. It also makes me realise how much emotion Judy puts into this performance.

  • @hines221 Hear, hear! I like the original version much better, and I keep trying to get our quartet to sing the original words, but I'm continually voted down. Maybe I like it more because I've seen the movie and I know the song's context within it. Or maybe the original is just altogether better and didn't need to be monkeyed with... yeah, that works for me.

  • I have always loved this song but it made me feel sad...... :(

  • "I'm taking all my dolls, the dead ones, too." lol Tootie is a great character, but I didn't like her lying.

  • I love the subtle cry in Judy's voice as she is trying to calm down Tootie because the audience knows that she doesn't want to go to NY either - she is just being a good big sister and trying to make Tootie feel better. This scene is amazing and is making me sob like a baby haha.

  • Judy Garland & Maragret O'Brien are brilliant actress'

  • One of my favorite Christmas songs of all time. Thank you daughter for sending it to me.

  • She made this song a Christmas Classic!! .. The most beautiful version ever!!

  • I cant wait for Christmas when TCM is showing these Christmas movies. This is by far my favorite Judy Garland movie

  • the smashing of the snowmen is sited as one of the early examples of the breakdown in the nuclear family and similar dark motifs that would become prevalent in 60's and 70's american horror films.

  • she forgot to destroy the last two snow people :(

    I can't get past this.

  • @castorres7 so glad u noticed!!!

  • How dare 3 people dislike this!!! This is a classic!!! Shame on them, Judy will forever be fabulous :)

  • Judy looks particularly beautiful here. The red lipstick is stunning on her.

  • this ALWAYS makes me cry. every single time. :') i love you judy <3

  • I have always wanted to make that scarf that Judy wears in this scene. Anyone know anything about it? What kind of beads were used, was it knit or crochet, etc? I have seen this about a million times.

  • I have always wanted to make that scarf that Judy wears in this scene. Anyone know anything about it? What kind of beads were used, was it knit or crochet, etc? I have seen this about a million time.

  • THANK YOU, FOR EVER JUDY GARLAND.

  • If i'm not feeling very much in the Christmas spirit, I'll watch this clip and it gets to me every time, I love it, and it's now a part of our family's traditional Christmas celebration, thank you so much for posting this, Judy Garland was beautiful and Margaret O'Brian the cutest little girl those were the days! thanks again.

  • she is so beautiful in this scene

  • I really liked the original lyrics.

  • ONE OF THE GREATS!!

  • This was my mother's favorite movie; everytime I see this film and this scene, I think of her and sometimes cry. I miss her greatly.

  • poor kid....i wish they could find a chance to get the snow people to come too

  • that little girl has the sweetest laugh.... :D

  • Awesome !

  • I LOVE JUDY GARLAND!!!!!!!!!!!! <3 <3

  • RIP Hugh Martin. Thank you for writing such a great Christmas song.

  • Hugh Martin, who wrote the music for the 1944 film "Meet Me in St Louis," has died on 3/11/11 at aged 96. In addition to this classic, were the movie were such classics as "The Trolley Song" and "The Boy Next Door."

  • RIP Hugh Martin, 96. Thank you so much for your incredible gift of great American music.

  • @CofCGuy: yes, indeed. Thanks for remembering this songwriter.

  • those snow people are pretty legit

  • what a movie..pls watch this in webmovietube

  • After seeing this movie this song became my all time favorite!! I have the DVD but thank you for posting it. The family is a beautiful thing!!

  • cool movie..check this at webmovietube

  • Best Christmas song ever.

  • thanks andrea haha!! nice movie..just watched this in webmovietube

  • watched this on the telly over xmas..really enjoyed it too. judy garland, amazing talent.

  • and let's not forget how exceptional margaret o'brien is here, either... oh my gosh. what a heartbreaking scene!

  • made my day!!! thanks webmovietube

  • Those are pretty elaborate snowmen...

  • Fabulous is not strong enough a word

  • I love, love, love, this clip!

  • One of the best Christmas songs ever....beautifully done by Judy....a great movie, too!!!!

  • poor snowmen. how mean.

  • She was so beautiful,,,,

  • I love this song, too. Be sure to check out Judy's other Beautiful Christmas song, "Merry Christmas," from "In the Good Old Summertime" which is my favorite.

Peace and joy to all of you during this Christmas season. :-)

  • I had heard this song before seeing the movie, but it never really impressed me until I heard Judy Garland Sing it. She owns this song. No one will ever sing it like she did. Merry Christmas!

  • @caroler11059 You couldn't have heard it before the movie because it was written for the movie and Judy was the original artist.

  • @kare429 You should do I better job of reading. I said I'd heard the song before I SAW the movie, not before the movie was made. Doy. I was't born then.

  • Any song that Judy Garland sings,to my mind, 'always'the bestversion. We will never see talent like hers again. She lived to perform and Hollywood, bastards that they were, used and abused her.She made Millions of dollars for MGM and the word 'exploited' was never better used than with JUDY.Nicholas Schenck and Louis B Mayer owe her anEnormous debt they can never repay.Roger Edens.Arthur Freed, Harold Arlen and Mervyn Leroy tried to warn about the total exploitation of her. Brad Savage --Life fan

  • for me, this is the only acceptable version of this song... not even Judy covering it later in her career; it has to be from this film. nobody else comes even close to catching the melancholy, and therefore poignant, tone to this beautiful song.

  • The original lyrics would have been more relevant to the movie, but would have made this far from a traditional Christmas song. The original lyrics are terrible.

I would be curious as to how it sounds though with the original lyrics.

  • Beautiful Voice!!!

  • This scene could not have been crafted more beautifully. Many other singers have performed the Christmas song over the decades but no one can touch Judy Garland's version introducing the song to everyone.

  • @DRG82100

Yes, and the original lyrics sound so much better than the ignorantly happy ones that most people know. A slow song like this needs a hint of wistfulness (but not the darkness that the first draft had! look it up, it would be far more akin to a bar scene (and, likely, a decidedly Norman Maine-ish character).

  • Best Christmas song ever. Even though its quite sad.

    Merry Christmas everybody!

  • i miss you Judy.

  • I LOVE CHRISTMAS TIME.

  • Movies were so good back then......Merry Christmas!

  • just adorable x

  • Excellent!!!!!

  • I love Judy Garland's voice and movies!!! <3

  • One of my favorite movies of all time! Amazing performance of Have yourself a merry little Christmas!

  • One of my favorite movies of all time! :D:D:D

    God Bless ~Amy

  • Thankyou so much for this wonderful video Michelebell1.xx

  • An amazing performance of a timeless song, plain and simple. RIP Judy Garland. And may Louis B Mayer burn in hell for all eternity! Thumbs up if you agree with me.

  • I'm always moved by the scene of the boy next door pulling down his blinds, causing darkness to cover Esther and Tootie, As if both Esther and her beau believe they're now to be separated forever.

  • Judy Garland is the best! Why can't movies be more like this these days?

  • Still gets me...

  • watching Margret O'Brien cry makes me cry....now I'm crying ;P

  • Margaret O'Brien really was amazing...

  • This is such a great clip and a wonderful Christmas song.MsGarland sings this song with such feeling and emotion I cry every time I hear it.Love it,thank you.

  • It doesnt get any better than this. Clasic hollywood, Judy is a light that shines past the rest a voice that hold and spreads depth. A tru talent lost and a wonderful scene from a wonderful movie. and com on the trolly song love that too sing at least once a week on the MARTA. lol

  • Considering the time of this film, when America knew that the war was coming to an end, this really is one of the most poignant, yet uplifting scenes telling us all - it takes a while but it gets better.

  • I can't believe the quality of this clip!<33

    Thank you SO much.

  • Throughout the film I'd wanted to be just like Tootie/Margaret O'Brien. She's very funny and mischievous, a big character in a tiny little frail body, and lucky enough to be pretty AND cute (cuteness dies with age, even if beauty develops). Also it would be wonderful to have two big sisters like Judy and Lucille (or my friend Charley for that matter) looking after me like junior/senior girls do in infant playgrounds! I expect Tootie doesn't have to try very hard to earn affection, eh?

  • 5:10 is enough to make many people nearly split their lungs from squealing "AWWWWWWWW" so ear-splittingly shrill.

  • why is she doing that? whats wrong?

  • @rextony22 Her dad was going to make them move to a different country, or at least to a different city, far far away from all her friends and neighbours and acquaintances and the home and village she grew up in. My heart goes out to Tooty and to the rest of her family, for all my nineteen years I've lived in this little village that I should probably keep anonymous and feel very fortunate that I've never been forced to move.

  • what movie is this from?

  • @furrycat3000 Meet Me in St. Louis.

  • what movie is this from?

  • Once Judy Garland introduced a song she automatically "owned it" and even if she sang somebody else's song she "owned" that one too. She was the Great Entertainer the World ever had. Not even Liza can capture her Mother's Unique way with a song. You can never top the original!

  • @Tenitra Actually - when they told her that her dog had died, little Margaret O'Brien said, enthusiastically, "Was there a lotta blood?"

  • I agree, God Bless you for posting this video.

  • Each time I watch this I go "WTF did they do to that child to make her cry like that?!"

  • This is my favorite "Meet me in St. Louis" scene. Judy sings the song so beautifully.

  • Damn that little girl is the best crier. That very believable lol

  • the most heart warming film and voice ever :)

  • timeless.....the perfect song

  • Esther was singing that song to Tootie to cheer her up - the dreaded day being imminent. You can see why the original words wouldn't have been very appropriate.

  • I cry every time. This brings back so many memories. My mom and I used to watch this together all the time when I was Tootie's age.

  • @usamuun ..aw me too...and I watch it every Christmas Eve without fail complete with giant size box of tissues for this scene, lol!! xx

  • well

  • Judy Garland was one of a kind. There will never be another like her.

  • This is movie magic -- the great Judy Garland singing "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" to adorable little Margaret O'Brien. Such a great scene from a magnificent film. Thanks for posting the clip. :)

  • Isn't the red, velvet dress that Judy wore here, the one she had made for Margaret O'Brien (Tootie) because she wanted it so much? ^_^

A beautiful song and gorgeous vocals (as always) from Judy Garland. She also looked stunning here appearance wise. Margaret acted so well in this movie. The scene when she started crying was priceless.

  • Evidently there were changes made to the song with original words referring to certain death by this same time next year. The writer had to be convinced he was on to a classic if he'd allow for a delicate change to his work.

  • Such a beautyful song ♥

  • This is the best quality clip I've seen so far on YouTube, and it shows the ENTIRE scene. Thanks SO much for posting it! Hands down, it's the most poignant Christmas song out there. I think because I had to move so much as a child, it really gets to me.

  • I've must have seen this a thousand times, and I still tear up :-D

  • @LESBIANGAYVIDEOS i'm crying now. poor tootie. poor snow bear. he's d-e-d. sigh....

  • @LESBIANGAYVIDEOS

    Yup..ain't it wonderfuL?

  • @LESBIANGAYVIDEOS Same here! I cried a little watching it just now :(.

  • Just beautiful, and the quality is excellent, I never tire of seeing this film...thank you Michele! :)

  • MicheleBell1 thank you for posting this. Is there a big difference between her M-G-M version of this song and her DECCA re-recording of the song? Is it true that M-G-M got worred that DECCA records was reaping the profits from some of her Movie song Hits?

  • I Love this Christmas song too, but . . . Wow, I never really thought what the original version was like! It was depressing!

I'm so glad it was changed after all, THANKFULLY . . .

Thanks for the video (and the info)!
