Please keep making videos because it helps me remember that I'm not nuts , I learned all of this from my grandparents and still practice these skills , but I get raged on for being such a country bumpkin , people say there's on need for skills like this any more , but I get a strange peace of mind as i dream of long ago simple living , even my wife says I was born in the wrong century . GREAT VID BROTHER !!!
@cavemanNCC1701 sir thanks for yourr comment .i know that in the comeing years the only people that will survive will #1 have jesus in there life and #2 have got back to basic skills .
Would you be willing to make a step by step tutorial of your lye process. I'm into making my own soap and want to be more independent and not have to buy my lye.
Yeah as some have said earlier NaOH or Lye is a Base not an Acid. Should anyone attempting to make this spill it on your hands or body you need to rinse with plenty of water or if it's available vinegar will immediately stop the Lye from burning your skin.
@dramey03 Yes, ash from a pot! And yeah, it's more about the color. If you have a wood burning stove and lots of ash, give it a try. If you have trouble with the first batch, you can always try again.
Second, it takes the whole 5 gallons of undiluted lye water to soak the deer hide, right? Correct me if I'm wrong. but would that not be too strong? What would be a good dilution ratio?
I see where some tanners use the dry form of KOH, and they use around 1/4 cup per 5 gallons of water. I know the dry stuff is stronger than potash, but it still seems like 5 gallons of straight potash might be too strong...?
ok one more question...i did everything you said and it doesnt come out quite as dark as yours even on its 2nd or 3rd time thru...is it still viable to make soap no matter how dark it is?
Nice video very helpful but am wondering if it is possible to use this lye to make soap...if you have already said it i did not hear it in the video...Thanks!
I have a few questions for you: How did you rig up that bucket properly with a spigot so that it doesn't leak? And also how do I tell which hard woods are suitable for use in lye? Im in Florida so all we have a lot of are pines and oak trees, along with lots of fireproof shrubs. This was a great video, thank you very much for making it!
It's plain whole LAAAA!!! I like your accent! Didn't see your other vids, but this one is very explicative. If I may make a small suggestion. As other has already pointed out, it's alkaline. Maybe, just put a tiny note at 2:49 to readjust. Eventhough, your vid is already pretty good. I'm a precision lover, I think it'll be even better. But, hey, that's me! Keep the good work.
great vid,, well done info, better then most, very helpful to the point,, an we here on this island where we live are sooooo appreciating this info,, thanks so much for the posting! ive subbed,, loved ur vid!
Hi I love your video. But i want to know i am from puerto rico and here we dont have does trees. i can use another trees for the ash or i need does you write in the video? Thanks
@nldflores If not you can do Sodium Lye. But, that's not survival, cause you'll need a small current. Maybe if u fabric a natural battery, then it may be survival. It's also easy to do. Feel free to ask me question , if ur interrest.
i've been looking into soap making, but your videos are just what i've been looking for. Excellent information for anyone to survive in the backwoods.
@BCRachelReed Thanks a lot Mike. Would you mind making a video on making the soap from fat, once you have the lye? I plan on making some lye once I get the wood stove burning again for the winter, and then I'm going to see if I can make some good soap from deer fat.
i would say from personal experience to not use any type of pine ashes. and also instead of boiling water i use rain water. you have some great videos. thank you for passing along the knowledge.
Awesome! Thank you for that. I'm glad to see that there are people that teach the old ways of living instead of putting a price or keep it secret from the rest of the world. Thank you again.
I was wondering how to make it myself over store bought crystals. We grill once a week or so and accumulate ash, do you think an old Frozen margharita tub with the tap (plastic) would do the trick?
@BCRachelReed I am so sorry... lol.. I must've been occupied.. I absolutely love your tutorials, I have now tanned my first two buckskins this year.. I used the lime solution but i really hate lime..this mix will help me out tremendously.. You know it's funny, my grandfather taught me many of these traits and at the time I felt it wasn't important knowledge, but age teaches us all knowledge is important.. Happy New Year .....

so if i understand right it may not be a specific amount of ash per 5 gallons?
its more about the color?
i came across this video as i just learned potash was literally pot ash
interesting video

cricketol 4 months ago
Lye is alkaline not acid
jaegerdogg 4 months ago
@jaegerdogg yep Lye is a very strong base
cricketol 4 months ago
A better way I have found is to electrolyse brine, although you produce some chlorine gas.
