They didn't have to pay off until the war was over. So that's highly irrelevant. The US needed Russia as much as Russia needed the US :). Japan however was fully capable of forwarding an on-scale invasion of Russia had it not been fighting with America. China and almost every other east Asia country were being dominated and taken over by the Japanese army. They were not much of a threat to Japan. If Germany and the Japanese were coherently collaborating it would have been hell for the allies.

Whereas Germany was practically doing everything on it's own. All I'm trying to get at is Germany was by far the most advanced, well-trained, kickass army and that's coming from a French man :o) Russia may have ended up winning but it wasn't in a easy stride. They lost 3x as many soldiers to an army who wasnt even a quarter of their size.
