BBC allows fans to make life-sized daleks as long as they aren't used for monetary gain. There's even a book on how to make a life-sized dalek and some videos floating around on the internet of home-made daleks.
I know. Theres a website called "ThisPlanetEarth" which are are a fullu licensed BBC company who build and sell Life Size Daleks, TARDIS', Cybermen Costumes and Helmets, K-9, Weeping Angels and other random props. Just google them to have a wee bash.
I'd love to build my own, but sadly i lack the skills, knowledge and money to do so. I started one ages ago, and got as far as making the dome and eye. I still have it :)
The thought has passed me a few times, but the one thing that stopped me was gold, because, as you see in this video the gold is really thick and lumpy because it needed lots of layers. It will never happen now im afraid though, because all my 2005 - 2010 Daleks have been customized into a grey colour scheme like the Classic Series =]
Well, id use Games Workshop Citadiel Paints for it, but dont use Games Workshop paints for Gold. The Gold is awfull, as you can see in the video. Its too watery and needs lots and lots of coats.
Oh!!!! I see you what you mean. Yeah, i painted him with some of the Games Worskshop paints. The Gold is very thick and overlaid though im afraid. Its not very good at going on in a few coats. Takes several of them. I shall maybe strip all the paint from this one day and start again if i ever find some nicer gold paints to use.
It was in a few Episodes of Series 4. The Libary 2 Parter with River Song and The Stolen Earth/Journeys End. Its called "A Pressing Need to Save the World". You can find it on Youtube or i can Email it to you. Ive got it as an MP3 =]
thats a great custom. i think the paints you use are too thick however. im guessing there some sort of water based acrylic. you should use enamal paints. there cheap, cover loads from a £1.30 tin will make many customs. they spread thinly also. it takes some practice but once you get used to them you wont go back. keep up the great work!
I use the paints from the games workshop. Its not that i messed it up, but the gol needs a few coats with that type of paint because it is very thin. have a look at my other custom. that went much better
hi there matey. well try a model shop for the paints. not games workshops but real models. planes, tanks etc. the thing is once you use enamal paints it gets very tacky so be carful with 2nd coats it drys quick though. avoid mistakes by using a dummy run first. you will also find that on a few rubber surfaces it takes a while to dry. a long while. clean ur brushes by using white spirt. 2ltrs for £2 from tesco. this is nasty stuff so be careful, its VERY flammable. any thing else, please ask.
yes you would need spirits. but normal white spirits is fin. its like 3 liters for around £2. Just get a small pot of thinner from the model shop and just refill when its very dirty. as for undercoat, sometimes yes. some rubbers stay tacky for days. i find a thin acrylic paint over does great. hard plastic theres no probs. if your painting dark colours then its best to undercoat as you use much less paint. you just cant beat the fine finish of enamol.
A brilliant video of all your models. You've done some excellent work in painting the mentioned daleks.
I used to do Airfix kind of models like tanks, planes, etc. as well.I even put together and painted a Samurai warrior on horseback.Looked great when finished .
cheers luke. im doing some classic Daleks next, starting with a genesis dalek customized into a death to the daleks dalek..... which wont be around untill september

@OwenDWF I can see your point on the gold, although the black looks well done.
StealthClaw1 9 months ago
@OwenDWF btw, do you have any ideas on what paint one would use for custom daleks?
you've partially inspired me to customize a dalek in the future...once i get enough money to pay for it though(CURSE ME LIVING IN THE U.S!) X)
