I was gob-smacked by the rudeness of that guy who interrupted her. He obviously wasn't interested in listening to her but thought he'd put in his opinion. Such a shame this was cut short, particularly something so sensitive, as i enjoy hearing Tori's stories
@MrTyphoidman rudeness? that isnt rudeness i liked tht the audience participates with her and this guy seems tht he WAS interested in listening to the story...dnt be so negative
I think Tori responded with that "yeah" because she doesn't like to tell you what song she's playing beforehand. So when the guy mentioned Marianne, it wasn't what Tori intended.
Wow, that was heavy. She looks about ready to tear that guy's head off, and he says "God bless Marianne", and she swallows and breathes "...yeah..." Nuff said.
One of the times I saw Tori (in Atlanta), she was in the middle of a story and just stopped because there were two men in the balcony arguing. She told them that they were distracting her and she wouldn't continue until they kissed and made up. LOL Gotta love her!
the story breaks my heart... i have a friends that is like Marianne... and if i lose her, i would feel terrible for years, never will be the same again
I dunno. It's a beautiful moment to me. God bless marianne and she starts the song. The point had been made, the story had been told to all her fans through the song. Poignant imo.
Who is the douchebag who interupts her!!! That is one of the most annoying things about going to see Tori..she's in the middle of telling a story and some ass wipe yells something out! Just shut up and listen, asshole!! We didn't come to hear you..we came to hear her!!
the interruption was rude but i think well-meant, ADP Concert of O8 there was a LOT of unecessary shouts and such, even an out-of-control drunk plus the smell of weed wafting 'round, The Palace
He may in fact be saying that...I'm not quite sure, but I sincerely think he was just trying to get Tori's attention just to be able to say "God bless Marianne" and you can't just tell by the look on Tori's face that he struck her - but not in a negative way. After all...
Who's Myra Ellen, excuse my ignorance. I really like Tori Amos but I'm afraid I know almost nothing about her :( .... I'm in love with this song and Butterfly. Tori is simply amazing!
I thought it was generally widely accepted this was about Tori's schoolfriend Marianne Curtis, who died of a drug overdose - Tori believed it was a mistake, not suicide, as the lyrics make clear. I don't hear anything autobiographical in this song.
I think you both are right; Tori is known for her symbolism, metaphor, and layers of meaning. Tori has spoken about who Marianne Curtis symbolized to her. When we take Marianne into the context of the Boys For Pele framework, Marianne represents this girl, but also not only this physical girl but an archetypal spirit of untainted girlhood. She lives on and Tori speaks about how she visits her, a girl that did not kill herself but was killed by society in spirit.
It is definitely Marianne Curtis. I went to school with both of them. I was one year behind them. And just fyi, she like never ever went by the name Myra. Her name was Ellen. That's what we all called her. Not Myra.
She died of a drug overdose. Its been reported as a suicide, but Tori thinks instead she just mixed some drugs together that shouldn't have been or something- that she would Never kill herself, because apparently this girl just... Shined.
Isn't it a Protestant/Anglican thing to go by your 'second' name?
I think it is. I was brought up in a Catholic tradition, but I had a friend called 'Jennifer Emma', who always went by 'Emma'.
That is amazing, that you went to school with Tori. It must really be something to have known somebody before they went on to make such beautiful music like that.
I think someday I'll see someone I knew in political office, at least. We spread our nets so widely these days, meet so many people.
I heard "Its true" in his reply, but we see she's a bit pissed, and I love it when she sings "not a chance" and she looks out towards him while singing it in such a way that moves my whole essence.
I actually thought that was quite touching and I believe Tori did too. Just the way he said it gives me chills...he said it so simply and respectful. He didn't shout it and he didn't seem pompous about it and you can tell by Tori's reaction that he said it all. That's why she just nodded and stood quiet.
Listen to the way she sings and they said Marianne killed herself, and I said NOT A CHANCE, NOT A CHANCe" - she is obviously replying to his statement. Also, look at the expression on her face, touched is a very bad way to describe it. Seems like she's thinking "oh this jerk, here we go again"
What a fucker that guy was. I have no doubt Tori thought the same thing. These days she's more of a diva and probably would have told the guy to eff off. You don't interrupt a story like that.
I think Tori was offended by that comment. Shes not exactly a christian anymore. Either that or she was offended by some stranger saying god bless about someone he did not know.
well i don't think she is offended by the "God" part of it because if you read interviews on her religious views she still expresses belief in God but she just disagrees with a lot of christian views.
I think he was just making general crowd noises at a really delicate, sensitive moment. I love what Tori does with it, though. The amount of feeling in that quiet "...yeah" is unbelievable. What a lady.
I have never seen this clip before... I met Tori last year and I have to say she is one of the most sincere artists out there. When she says "...yeah" she means it.
Thank you for posting!! I love '96 Mariannes, I think there's only one other one on Youtube. She's so nice to people who yell out like that. He seemed kinda embarrassed when she said "What". I think he was saying "True!" after she said "She died of an OD."
I think the guy who interrupted her, did her a favour!
She turned it around into a beautyful proformance! I can just imagine her thinking "Yeah, God better have blessed Marianne!" JUST LOOK AT HER FACE, I THOUGHT STUFF LIKE THAT ONLY HAPPENED IN MOVIES! i love her more for this!
I adore Tori, I do. But sometimes her fans make me sick. I can't believe that ass interrupted the story like that. Even though it was '96, I am presently pissed.
Besides the interruption this song makes me cry every time.
