Well! 25 divided by 3 is something like 8,33 per person. That's what they should pay! They get a dollar back, that means they at least paid 9,33 per head. Multiply 9,33 with 3 and you get 28. Add the 2 in the pocket and you have 30!
If you like you can take 10 - 9,33 and multiply the number with 3. It should be aprox. 2 dollars. Add this up to your 9,33 times 3 and you have 30!
This isn't a riddle. It's simply a misstatement...
it should not be multiplied.. u need to add it. When you multiply 3 to 9 then add 2, it would be 27. but it you think more clearly.. the clerk charged $30 when it should be $25, so he gave 5 $1 to the bellboy and he get $2.. so the formula is..:
25(the original cost) + 2(the money that the bellboy snatched) + 3(the money shared by the three men) = $30(the whole money)
Well if you think again how the money transfered from each to the other its easy to see that there is not problem...THE PROBLEM IS THE WAY THAT ALL PEOPLE THINK!!!!I hope to get all of your money one day MWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
this is the the solution: they paid 10 $first time and then they were given back 1 $ each...in the end they paid only 27 $....so the 2 $ remaining you don"t add you substract because they paid 25 $ for the room and the 2 $ for the clerk....25+2+3=30...so there is no missing dollar..good riddle anyway!!
ok yea thts pretty cool, but easyish to work out when you plan it out logically..
3x10=30 hotel gave back 5, so 30-5=25 the -5 is 5..-2 for bell boy and -3 for men 3+2=5
25+5=30.... lol people saying tht Einstein "surely wasn't troubled by this, to be fair since he was severely dyslexic i dont see why he wouldn't have been lol
It is a riddle. They didn't pay $30. They payed 25. This is explained in the question. $30 were payed, $3 were given back, and $2 went to the Bellboy. You subtract $2 from $27. Not add.
OH MY GOD. I'm being dead serious here. I solved this problem RIGHT AWAY. As SOON as it was asked. In fact I knew the answer at 3:00, before the question was even asked. I thought to myself, they paid $27. The other $2 would be subtracted from the 27, NOT ADDED. DUH. Like I said, there's NO WAY IN HELL Einstein had a problem with this piece of cake problem. This is SO fucking easy. So easy in fact that it wasted my time. You people who don't get it are MORONS.
omg i totally answered this question in math class two weeks ago. it's not that hard, took no more than 5 minutes. Lets forget for a moment you totally fucked up the wording.
denisxx has a good explanation, but the real reason you have a missing dollar is because the question is using ONLY whole numbers in your word equation. real currency (and the answer) on the other hand is subject to the laws governing rational numbers.
ie. 25 divided by 3 = 25/3 or 8.333. While if we use whole numbers (forgetting for a moment that's mathematically impossible in this case) 25/3 = 8 with 1/3 or .333 remaining. Because we are using WHOLE numbers, the decimal or rational number is omitted. Thus, with whole numbers alone 25/3 in fact equals 8.
Anyone with an IQ greater than a raisin knows that 8*3=25 is not mathematically possible. The same can be applied to the $5 dollar refund.
It's one of those quirks of assumption. The total cost of the rooms is not $27 as you should not take $1 off the room cost of $10 each. The three rooms cost $25 and divided by 3 = $8.333r. per room. So, 8.333r x 3 + 3 + 2 = $30 (well 29.9999r to be exact)
The problem with the equation would be the accounting of the bellboys 2$. You naturally try to add that amount to the 27$ the 3 men payed out because you see it as an additional cost, but remember that the 27$ already considers it (break it down, 25$ goes to hotel and 2$ goes to bellboy) so you wouldn't count the 2$ again, instead you consider the money they saved, the 3$ and that accounts for every dollar.
Everybody's equation makes sence on paper, but when you put 30 1 dollar bills in front of you and act it out, it does mess with your mind. If you have a stack of 30 $1's, and you remove 5, that's still a total of $30. 25 + 5 = 30. If you hand each man back 1 dollar, that DOES mean they paid $9 each. 9 x 3 = 27. If the bellboy kept $2, that would make a total of $29. How do you account for the missing dollar? I'm not saying the answers aren't right, but that is a tasty little mindfuck.
everone whose trying to get this let me help you...WHY ARE U TRYING TO GET TO 30...they re only payin 25...so u got the 30 dollars they paid 10 each.... the bellboy gives....gives..them 3dollars..now theve paid 27 dollars or 9 dollars each ...but u dnt add it u subtract the 2 dollars...to get the amount they paid
that bellboy was oversmart.. If i was there at his place. I would have handed all the $5 to them and should have asked for a tip. :) Now how to divide that $5 between 3 of them is there problem i got my tip..:D
I would have handled this situation in a different manner. If we divide 25 by 3 we get an answer of 8.33 (as we dont have .33 in currency lets round it up to .5) so 8.5 *3 = 25.5. give that $0.5 to the bell boy as a tip.
so wat customer paid = 10*3 =30
I paid back the extra money = 4.5 i.e. 1.5 to each customer.
paid as tip to the bell boy (considering that the customer has paid him) = .5 (I would have done this settlement at the time of check out..)
3 men did not pay 9$ each! they paid 10 each 3 times 10= 30 room cost 25$ 30-25=5 the man pocketed two dolares 5-2=3 the man gave a dolar to each 3-3=0 it never went missing! equation should be.... (10x3)-(5)+(2)+(3)=30
i was just correcting it,, see the comment of milkfelm...he says that there is atip,, but it adds up to $31 not $30,, before you complain,,,just read it carefully!!!! pra hndi ka napapahiya!!!!! wahahahah
30/3=10 30-5=25 bellboy pockets 2 dollars, and gives 3 to the men, they tip him 1 dollar therefore 25+2(bellboy thief)+1(tip)+3(money returned)=30 dollars, Ignore the failed logic used in the end of the math riddle, put ther to confuzzle you. as you can see total is 30 dollars. NOW STOP COMPARING THESE DINKY-ASSED RIDDLES TO EINSTEIN!!!
Desk clerk: give the bell boy 5$ The desk clerk now have 25$ and the bell boy 5$ = 30$
bell boy take 2 of the five because he cant split 5 three ways:
the three men get 3$
the bell boy has 2$
the desk clerk 25$
giving a total sum of 30$ there is no dollar missing, its only meant to confuse you to say that they paid 9$x3 because they did not, they paid 10$x3 and got 3$ back later while the bell boy still had 2$ in his pocket.
The 30 is in the till because it has just been payed, yeah?
Then they take 5 dollars out (so they have payed 25 dollars) and then the bellboy take two of the 5 dollars (that makes 27 dollars) and then the men recieve the 3 dollars adding up to 30.
Another way to think about the answer to this riddle is to just pretend that the bellhop refunded $3 to the lawyers (rather than giving them $5 and recieving $2 back). If the lawyers get $3 back and each takes $1. They they spent exactly $27 dollars.
There are ma ny ways of explaining/thinking bout this truly brain bending riddle! It all boils down to the fact that the lawyers's math is incorrect. They did NOT spend $9 • 3 + $2.
They spent exactly $27 dollars. $25 for the room and $2 for the tip. Remember they got exactly $3, in total back.
Well, I look at few answer and everyone is missing a part... The thing is that the problem is not properly put in algebric way. Because after counting the price for the night it gives 27$, this is really what they paid, so the 2$ of the bellboy should be substract because the new anwser is 25, not 30. Einstein would have eated this for breakfast...
Haha good try ganderdip, but each person did not pay 8.33. They each payed ($10 minus the dollar each got back=$9 each). They really "payed" $27 total because the bellboy cheated them. (Look at the term "payed" as the difference between how much they came with and how much they left with. 30-3=27.) So $27 dollars went to the hotel: $25 to the cashier, $2 to the bellboy. tada!!
Plus ganderdip, if you split 25 dollars three ways, it equals 8.33333..... It just can't be evenly divided between 3 people unless one pays an extra penny.
They paid $30 for the room out of which $2 is in bellboy's pocket and $25 as room charges.. making charge them $27...so the remaining $3 are in their pockets. is it clear now????????
Follow the money as though YOU, were the 3 men. If you were the 3 men you would come into the motel, Pay $10.00 each and go to your room, suddenly a knock comes on the door, you answer to see the bellboy. He gives back $1.00 to each of you, $3.00 total.
making each mans total $9.00, A total of $27.00 for the 3 men. The bellboy leaves with $2.00 in his pocket he couldn't split 3 ways. making a total of $29.00. So where is the OTHER DOLLAR???.
its a play on words, the 9x3 is irrelavent. the 3 men paid 10 each and got five back, but the question tricks you into thinking that they only got three when in fact they got five and the bellboy stole the other 2 adding up to 10+10+10 = 30 - 5 = 25. 3 of the five dollars go to the 3 men and 2 of the five dollars go to the bellboy. no dollar missing
yea but that doesnt solve the question the right way, its whered the dollar go. they confuse you with 9x3 when all you need is 10x3 = 30 - 5 = 25, 2 of the five went to the bell boy and 3 of the five went back to the 3 men.
I made believe that an error never occurred. I divided $25.00 by 3 and came up with 8.3333... When the bell hop tried to corect the over payment, the missing dollar is already calculated in the $5.00. The three guests were only supposed to have given $8.3333... but they ended up giving a full $9.00 instead! Does my explanation make any sense ??? lol
sativo99, you state the problem real well the men did pay $30.00 and got back $3.00 which made it a total paid of $27.00. and the $2.00 in the bus boys pocket from the $5.00 he couldn't split 3 ways makes it a total of $29.00. "GO FIGURE!!!" AH!
it's a common mistake that most people add the $2 that the boy kept to the $27 that the men paid.Because the three men paid $27 and kept $3,(27+3=30) the boy kept $2 and the hotel only recieved $25 (25+2=27).If you add the $2 to the $27 you're counting the $2 twice! The real question should be where did the $2 come from instead of where did the $1 go, and the answer is simply "from the hotel" as the men paid $27 the boy nicked $2 and so the hotel recieved $25 of $27
First off the key thing to remember is what they exactly paid, not the $30, but the $25. So forget what the bellboy did because that is an off set. Take $25/3 and you get $8.33, right. That's what they each paid. Then to the known total of $25 add the 3 dollars given back, now you have a total of $28. The two missing bills are in the bellboys pocket. The bellboy is a trick. It's like when you're taking a test and there are 4 answers when there are only 3 questions, it's to throw you off.
It's a problem we face every day in different angles and situations. It is something we need to be aware of so we don't loose our own money, (Big Time). Thanks for the comment It's well appreciated.
The $2 is already included in the $27 that the three men paid. (27=2[with the bellboy]+25[with the manager]). Therefore, it's redudant altogether to add 2 to 3x9 (or 2 to 27=2+5).
baby scared me..

easy... they each actually get $9 and .333333 cents back. 9.33 x 3= 27.99999 wich round sup to $28 and the bell boy gets to keep the $2

By saying that 3X9+2=30 is incorrect
they paid 3X9 MINUS 2 (because the bell boy stole it)
This then = 25 which is what they paid for the room
There is no missing dollar
the main person has 25
the bellboy has 2
and the men have 3
25+2+3=30!!!
By saying that 3X9+2=30 is incorrect and has absolutely no relevance to the problem
hughsie12345 7 months ago
ACTUALLY you have to do the math right..................
the bellboy stole 2$......
That means the men paid 28$, not 30.........
28/3= 9.33333

In the end, the total for all three men is 28 dollars ( not including what the boy took).
Since 28/3 is irrational, there would always be a fraction.
So if the boy kept 2 dollars, each man would have spent 9.33$ and then got back 1 dollar each. So, each only spent 8.33$
So, 8.33 * 3 == 25; 25 + 2 + 3 == 30;
Not sure if I'm right, so please tell me if there is any error.

Room Rent = (3*Money spent by one person) - Money with bellboy
25 = 3*9 - 2
LHS = RHS
As for the dollar
Total money = 3*9 - 2 + 5
where 3*9 = money spent by 3 persons
-2 = money given to bell boy
& +5 = money recieved from reception
=>Total Money = 27 - 2 + 5 = 30

giving a total sum of 30$ there is no dollar missing, its only meant to confuse you to say that they paid 9$x3 because they did not, they paid 10$x3 and got 3$ back later while the bell boy still had 2$ in his pocket.
daylight18 2 years ago
The 30 is in the till because it has just been payed, yeah?
Then they take 5 dollars out (so they have payed 25 dollars) and then the bellboy take two of the 5 dollars (that makes 27 dollars) and then the men recieve the 3 dollars adding up to 30.
It's the way they phrase that confuses you.
MattSimcock1995 2 years ago
I know the answere the you dont add the 2 dollars you subtract it to = $25 good problem though.
midnightracer007 3 years ago
Another way to think about the answer to this riddle is to just pretend that the bellhop refunded $3 to the lawyers (rather than giving them $5 and recieving $2 back). If the lawyers get $3 back and each takes $1. They they spent exactly $27 dollars.
Lukas0320 3 years ago
There are ma ny ways of explaining/thinking bout this truly brain bending riddle! It all boils down to the fact that the lawyers's math is incorrect. They did NOT spend $9 • 3 + $2.
They spent exactly $27 dollars. $25 for the room and $2 for the tip. Remember they got exactly $3, in total back.
Lukas0320 3 years ago
you say 3 x 9 dollars
+2 dollars bellboy took = 29
it should be 3x 9 dollars
-2 dolars bellboy took = 25
muiujhgiufbhj 3 years ago
theres no dollar missing, this is all just a play on words..
DrLsw 3 years ago
Well, I look at few answer and everyone is missing a part... The thing is that the problem is not properly put in algebric way. Because after counting the price for the night it gives 27$, this is really what they paid, so the 2$ of the bellboy should be substract because the new anwser is 25, not 30. Einstein would have eated this for breakfast...
aucun007 3 years ago
so its easy to see that there is no dollar missing.
Total hotel cost $25
Bellboy 2$
Refund 3$
but it turns out each person pays 8.33 for the hotel.. so what happens to that penny?? 8.33 x 3 = 24.99
ganderdip 3 years ago
Haha good try ganderdip, but each person did not pay 8.33. They each payed ($10 minus the dollar each got back=$9 each). They really "payed" $27 total because the bellboy cheated them. (Look at the term "payed" as the difference between how much they came with and how much they left with. 30-3=27.) So $27 dollars went to the hotel: $25 to the cashier, $2 to the bellboy. tada!!
synapsekiller17 2 years ago
Plus ganderdip, if you split 25 dollars three ways, it equals 8.33333..... It just can't be evenly divided between 3 people unless one pays an extra penny.
synapsekiller17 2 years ago
There is no dollar. The hotel has 25, the bellboy has two, and each man has 3. 25+2+3 = 30.
It's just the way they phrase it makes it look wrong.
Dragor54 3 years ago
They paid $30 for the room out of which $2 is in bellboy's pocket and $25 as room charges.. making charge them $27...so the remaining $3 are in their pockets. is it clear now????????

NOTE! The Problem Simplyfied...
Now, Go Figure!!!.
BlackMagicSkull 3 years ago
its a play on words, the 9x3 is irrelavent. the 3 men paid 10 each and got five back, but the question tricks you into thinking that they only got three when in fact they got five and the bellboy stole the other 2 adding up to 10+10+10 = 30 - 5 = 25. 3 of the five dollars go to the 3 men and 2 of the five dollars go to the bellboy. no dollar missing
DrLsw 3 years ago
wow, how funny we did a very similar ? in my calc class .
The truth is there is no missing dollar it is a math trick each person technically paid 9.33 for his share of the room.
9.33 X 3 = 28.00 + 2.00 = 30.00
HafizFarhan 3 years ago
yea but that doesnt solve the question the right way, its whered the dollar go. they confuse you with 9x3 when all you need is 10x3 = 30 - 5 = 25, 2 of the five went to the bell boy and 3 of the five went back to the 3 men.
DrLsw 3 years ago
I made believe that an error never occurred. I divided $25.00 by 3 and came up with 8.3333... When the bell hop tried to corect the over payment, the missing dollar is already calculated in the $5.00. The three guests were only supposed to have given $8.3333... but they ended up giving a full $9.00 instead! Does my explanation make any sense ??? lol
LRHurtado32 3 years ago
exactly thats what happened. :D not 9split it should of been 8.333
s4nt1v3l 3 years ago
to the last comment...
sativo99, you state the problem real well the men did pay $30.00 and got back $3.00 which made it a total paid of $27.00. and the $2.00 in the bus boys pocket from the $5.00 he couldn't split 3 ways makes it a total of $29.00. "GO FIGURE!!!" AH!
BlackMagicSkull 3 years ago
The $30 is irrelevant. Basically, cash was exchanged, and if you trace the cash inflows and outflows, you'll see that $30 was never exchanged.
The men's NET cash outflow was ($30-$3)=$27
The hotel's Net cash inflow was ($30-$5)=$25
The difference is the $2 the bellboy kept. He stole from the men, who should have only paid $25 total, but actually paid $27 for the room.
sativo99 3 years ago 3
@sativo99 they paid $9 each
3*9 = 27
they gave $25 as room rent
the rest $2 went to the bellboy
As for the missing dollar
3*9 + (-2) + 5 = 30
where +3*9 is what they paid -2 is the amount which bellboy kept +5 is the amount given by the reception as compensation for overcharge
If you read this comment carefully you will see that none of the details have been used twice unlike the question

it's a common mistake that most people add the $2 that the boy kept to the $27 that the men paid.Because the three men paid $27 and kept $3,(27+3=30) the boy kept $2 and the hotel only recieved $25 (25+2=27).If you add the $2 to the $27 you're counting the $2 twice! The real question should be where did the $2 come from instead of where did the $1 go, and the answer is simply "from the hotel" as the men paid $27 the boy nicked $2 and so the hotel recieved $25 of $27
Weeble68 3 years ago
Or to put it realy simply: people get mixed up between what has been spent and recieved.
Three men SPENT $27, boy RECIEVED $2 and hotel RECIEVED $25 (25+2=27).
Weeble68 3 years ago
Very interesting :) Thats a real brain teaser if your not paying attention :)
Reurra 3 years ago
My bad it's $8.66, not $8.33, sorry. But still everything else I said was right
Takshia89 3 years ago

Thanks for the comment It's well appreciated.

this is very old...
lchigokun 3 years ago
so..it should be (10-9)*3+25+2=30
rockvee 3 years ago
I enjoyed it!!!
The $2 is already included in the $27 that the three men paid. (27=2[with the bellboy]+25[with the manager]). Therefore, it's redudant altogether to add 2 to 3x9 (or 2 to 27=2+5).
=D
succexy11 3 years ago
this is simple... the three men did not pay $9 each. they paid ($25)/(3 men)=$8.66/man. thus 8.66x3+3=$28 not $29.
scott01019 3 years ago
So does the doorbell do the service for free.... remember the bellboy is suppose to be paid so the $1 will be paid for his service
