The invasion of Alaska was similar to the Japanese invasion of the Phillipines as it was a territory and not a part of the United States merely a colony. I think of this more as a political commentary than anything beyond that.
As far as the engines of enlightenment, consider the position of someone from 1880 compared to that of someone from 1946 or so (a single lifespan where in 1945 the US economy represented 50% of all economic activity on Earth)

The disturbing fact is that a non-trivial percentage of some of our political thinkers and even some of the voters, actually think like this. Certainly positive effects of nationalism and industrialism are necessary for any nation, but militarism and imperialism is obviously a much more dangerous cocktale, but one which hardliners like the Neoconservatives were entirely comfortable utilizing for their own aims.

I wouldn't presume to suggest that our current government, as it operates is entirely in the service of "the people". One could easily counter that Christianity and Democracy gave rise to Nazism, more recently, we certainly entertained the Neoconservative / Objectivist ideologues that spend far too much time listening to ideas that sound good but have little meaning and blood-soaked consequences, outside of the confines of a library, can one suggest we are safer after 9/11 or just more aware?

Aslong as you dont have ockupation forces in every country on earth, you are not a worldpower. Russia mostly stays inside their borders. Europe is not a country. I would say China is about as big as the U.S, if not bigger.
As for Scandinavia, you dont have as much as one foot there. Maybe you see worldpower as having the English language all over the world? Or being the leading movie production country? The world powers are all the largest unions together. If one falls, the other falls.
