I love her voice and it's fun to rediscover her talent and performances through Youtube...thanks for sharing...I am currently reading 'Dream a little dream of me...the life of 'Mama' Cass Elliot written by Eddi Fiegel...i recommend it to all of her fans...it is very well written and researched...lots of detail about her personal and musical life...her many friendships in and out of the entertainment business...you can probably find it on line...i just wanted to share that with her fans.
If you want to learn how to enunciate (sing every word so that it is clearly understood!), listen to Cass Eliott. She does it to perfection! And such a beautiful voice!
God rest your beautiful soul Eliot. God bless your beautiful wonderous voice that warms our hearts with love, joy, peace, and happieness. You truly are, and always will be, my hero. Forever.
One song rendition Cass did that I'd never heard was her version of "Lift Every Voice and Sing", she truly owns the song and performs it with amazing grace and power. I still miss her!
She was gifted with such a fabulous voice but it wasn't just the voice that made this special lady but what she put in to the songs she sang. She put her self in to all her songs and thats what made them all so great
Such an amazing talent gone way too quickly. I remember her being on the Scooby Doo cartoons when I was a kid. She was so versatile and amazing. May she rest.
One of my favourite songs and what a performance by Mama Cass ! Got to admit This really took me back .I always liked Mama Cass but thought of her as a pop singer period ! On this she show's how she could have handled anything from Jazz through pop to Soul. Wonderful post ! Is there an album with this on it ?
There has never been another one like Cass Elliot. Her voice was so pure and natural. Imagine the music we have missed out on due to her early departure. Such a beautiful person, gone too soon.
I think it says something that her music is still loved and listened to right till this day. I'm only 26 and have been listening to her music for years by accident after hearing Make Your Own Kind of Music, in a movie. Almost 40 years after its initial release and it still hitting the right cords with each new generation of music lovers. What an incredible singer, and wonderful person.
Also, your comments on Cass' musical background is interesting. She really had influences many of her generation didn't. If she had lived, she would have had a long career, given that she was such a talented interpreter of timeless songs.
A question- I don't know her work all that well. What solo album(s) of hers would you recommend?
I would recommend you to hear Cass's first RCA solo album "Cass Elliot - 1972". I also like her album with Dave Mason, and her very first one, Dream A Little Dream of Me.
Thanks so much for posting this. I never got a chance to see this TV special when it originally aired. Do you possibly have video of her singing it? So many singers have done this song, but I feel that Mama Cass' version is one of the best, with her bell-like voice . . .
Unfortunetly, "Don't Call Me Mama anymore" was never realeased in DVD format. But it's not said that it will never show up. There's some speech about it :)
Oh good! Taddy hasn't unleashed his terror on this song yet! This is undoubtedly one of Cass's best (though I say that about all of her songs). What a voice!
This is a song worthy of the The Devine Cass, unlike that shclock on "the road" album. I love the 1st RCA and solo Dunhill albums too. Cass was famous for knocking lousy songs herself, and she was probably to high to realize how bad most of those songs were. She should have been singing more songs by Leah, Janis Ian , Leonard Cohen, Randy Newman, John Sebastian etc or standards like this. Her singing on that ablum is great though.
Thank you Christopher for sharing this Cass song! My Diva, Cass Elliott! What a talent, voice and Grand Dame of Rock & Roll... She truely is the Gertrude Stein of the early sixties/seventies... & modern day rock/pop...There truely is A NEW DAY COMING! I'll be seeing you....Cass!!!
Christopher, I have been listening to all your Cass stuff the last couple of days, What an amazing talent. I want to say Thank you for taking me back to a simpler time.
Thank you so much for this video, I'm sorry for the delay in my comment, but I have had a broken computer and just got a new one. This was a lovely song to reunite me with YouTube :)
I'm supposed to learn this song for my solo class and I think this is thee best version for my voice and definitely my favorite so far.
