US congresswoman Cynthia McKinney has come out and blamed the pro-Israel Lobby in America (AIPAC, ADL, ZOA, etc) for ruining her political career. While in congress she refused to sign the pro-Israel pledge and took a pro-Palestinian stance. Because of this, McKinney said “war was declared” on her by the Jewish lobby. In 2009 she told TIU's Ognir that “more than 99% of Congress work for Pro Zionist Israeli interests.”
@HylianSpirit seriously? so i will go and rape and murder your family now. and let me be happy in knowing that i will not die because you belive that "NO one" deserves the death penalty. kay.
@AirsoftAttack231 What good does killing the man who wronged you do, other than satisfy some sort of draconian bloodlust?
Tell me. What if the man who does something horrible gets in to an accident, and is afflicted with amnesia that wipes his memory of the last 10 years. What happens to the thing within the man that made him deserve death? A man, for however horrible his deed, is not in himself, his crime.
Saw this film when it came out and don't care to see it again either; all I know is that Bjork was stopped from singing, and that, in my opinion, was the best part.

This movie it's an amazing portrait of our reality, the last message was dedicated to those evil souls that are trying to take over our world. Liars Von Trier its one of my most favorite dorectors.

In some countries even today they still have the death penalty , whether its by stoning or worse. Selma lives , I agree and we can still change the evil judicary system.
the judicial system man has built to judge each other as guilty or innocent is as flawed as the species that imposes it - it is built upon not only a flawed equation and a theory about 'justice' that ignores not only mankind's ability to make mistakes, but mankind's capabiity to forgive -
Ill admit, there is a guy who looks so much like david morse character that I know.. and I can't help but relate him to this, ugh too good of acting I hate him :) and his evil wife, great film :))
@1999temp Please... I'm german but I think you cannot prejudice ALL the americans. I'm sure lots of american teens don't think as the lawyers do. so come on man...
Well, Chistina, Von Trier's film Dancer in the Dark won Cannes in the year 2000. Is a musical (US art) inspired after the racist politics on Death Penalty in Texas executed by ex president Bush against blacks and hispanic (chicanos or wet backs) people at the turn of the Century charged as criminals, without fair trails and just laws which recieved a strong opposition in Europe and Latinamerica. ADN samples proved some prisioners sentenced to die were innocent, yes?
@betokkikke well for one thing your referring to redneck corrept goverment, not me or my friends who all live in america.. In which I partly dislike and partly ignore
@ChristinaWolfle Sí, Christina, I didn't mean to offend US people nor you with my comments but you know here's not so much space to write long ideas, thanks for answer me and well, I saw that film in Madrid, Spain, during the Fall of 2000 just after french publications (Le Nouvelle Observateur, Le Monde) printed special magazines on Bush' Death Row. But you're right, Dancer... recreates Washington State of 1964 and Björk (Salma) rehearses The Sound of Music (musical, 1959; film, 1965)!

I'll do it like Selma always does. I watch until 3:12, before she starts singing the last song of the film, and then I get out of YouTube - even though it hasn't got a happy ending. But if I do it this way, Selma won't die and lives on forever.

The point when she is about to go high on the notes and the hatch opens feels like a punch to the stomach. And I love the little detail with the curtains. As Von Trier said himself "She doesn't act, she feels".

Von Trier is famous for a 'bullying' style of direction, but this is something else. I still feel a ton of pain whenever I see this movie, and the worst part is knowing that it's real.
The Oscars are a popularity contest and a joke. It has nothing to do with craft but is (mostly) a controlled act in propaganda in perpetuating the fairytale of america empire through culture. Lars has stated distrust and disgust with the "American fairytale" and has been an outcast since.
This is one of the finest performances male or female in cinema history period. The fact that is was shunned by the Oscars is proof of the ignorance and manipulation of this supposed "ACADEMY" .
@hundredand I have a general theory that most if not all our media is designed to not threaten or call bullshit on authority or our capitalist society. Nothing is suppose to break the snow globe their illusions have us under...I think true authentic art and artists threaten this and that is one of the functions of artists that is why a society needs them as much as we need free speech. Corporations control our art and our music and our speech and have controlled our government in the shadows.
The Kings Speech is about one of the wealthiest families on top of one of the most blood soaked empires(to that point) and a poor taffy headed plutocrat who has a stutter... Really? In these days of growing global serfdom this is what we look up to? This is a story that gives us enlightenment? Reflects our times? Makes us better? Save us from ourselves... F the Rich!
After I saw this film I was silent for alomst an hour and couldn't move. It was just sooo... yeah I can't explain it. But after I saw this film I was stunned by Bjork's performance. The Juniper tree was good too. If you all haven't heard the juniper tree was her first film role.
this film illustrates the meaning of 'surreal' to me....in the sense that, yes, on the one hand it is fiction (as far as i know it's not a true story), and yet in reality there must have been situations like this- many no doubt, where innocent women with tragic lives were executed in a tragic ending.
oh yeah, i know Bjork is singing and it's like a bizarre 'musical'...that's the 'artistic' side of it, but still...an audience watching an execution like it was a broadway show- this is real. sad.
i would give her 10 oscars for this..! its incredible... i could cry all the time when i would repeat that vid...best performance i've ever seen..just really touched my heart.. wow..
It's a shame Bjork wasn't oscar-nominated for this role. The Oscar should have gone to her or Ellen Burstyn for RFAD.
However, Selma's such a stupid bitch!!! Such a fucking idiot!!! She did everything for it to happen, and didn't do anything to save herself and HER SON!!! He wasn't asking for anything!!!
greetings - Yes, I see your point, Bjork's character rurns to music to rally her spirit, no matter what atrocities are done to her - & since we all must die anyway, we have only the single choice as to how we face death -
this makes me think of the final episode of the BBC production Reilly, Ace of Spies - he is shot by the Soviet secret police, but he thinks of a tune he enjoys & hums it with pleasure until the moment he is killed - it is our only victory, but a beautiful one -
the script sounds pretty cheesy and narmfull, but it works due too bjorks strong performance and von triers direction, under lesser directors it would have been very stupid
GOD BLESS AMERICA AND ALL YOU STAND FOR! A truly monumental performance from every cast member - What blockbuster can compare to the honesty, the heart and soul of every performance? Pure genius, too painful to watch but it cannot fail to move us. A masterpiece

In these days of growing global serfdom this is what we look up to? This is a story that gives us enlightenment? Reflects our times? Makes us better? Save us from ourselves... F the Rich!

@ma77hew7720 Well said, I totally agree.

After I saw this film I was silent for alomst an hour and couldn't move. It was just sooo... yeah I can't explain it. But after I saw this film I was stunned by Bjork's performance. The Juniper tree was good too. If you all haven't heard the juniper tree was her first film role.

this film illustrates the meaning of 'surreal' to me....in the sense that, yes, on the one hand it is fiction (as far as i know it's not a true story), and yet in reality there must have been situations like this- many no doubt, where innocent women with tragic lives were executed in a tragic ending.
oh yeah, i know Bjork is singing and it's like a bizarre 'musical'...that's the 'artistic' side of it, but still...an audience watching an execution like it was a broadway show- this is real. sad.

I really like this movie. It's basically life in a nutshell, especially the ending.

He wasn't asking for anything!!!

bjork is so incredibly raw and real in everything she does... her music is one example, so is this film.

horribly depressing pointless movie - sure, better to die defiant than broken, but I didn't need to get completely bummed out to be aware of it

@SupernalOne You didn't understand it don't you??? Well, tastes are tastes, for me, is a masterpiece. Salutations!!

greetings - Yes, I see your point, Bjork's character rurns to music to rally her spirit, no matter what atrocities are done to her - & since we all must die anyway, we have only the single choice as to how we face death -
this makes me think of the final episode of the BBC production Reilly, Ace of Spies - he is shot by the Soviet secret police, but he thinks of a tune he enjoys & hums it with pleasure until the moment he is killed - it is our only victory, but a beautiful one -

@SupernalOne It's not pointless, it's a comment on death penalty.

the script sounds pretty cheesy and narmfull, but it works due too bjorks strong performance and von triers direction, under lesser directors it would have been very stupid

GOD BLESS AMERICA AND ALL YOU STAND FOR! A truly monumental performance from every cast member - What blockbuster can compare to the honesty, the heart and soul of every performance? Pure genius, too painful to watch but it cannot fail to move us. A masterpiece
