I believe they write great lyrics, that could be metaphorical, vivid, and definitely interesting. They aren't like bands who write songs that can't be interpreted in other ways. Another such band is "Alesana". Their lyrics are really interesting, and they really make you visualize the song in your head. But yeah, I think that's your opinion. Maybe the style isn't just working for you. I'm suprised though that you didn't say anything about the vocals, because most people critisize that first.
I personally love the mars volta. Their lyrics are vivid and very hard to understand until they tell you what the album is about. He's a good singer so i'm not going to critisize him for that. The growling? It's just a form of expression, well it should be anyways. I have heard other bands talk about how much they love someone using the growl. not right. It was started by metal bands to convey anger and hatred toward something and that's what it sounds like it should do. He's a great singer

Besides this band is a little too mainstream for my taste as of late. I've been more into musical complexity lately. Ever listen to Bjork's old band sugar cubes or porcupine tree? Pretty decent. You might want to give Tool a try too.
And btw, if you want to hear some songs that could make more sense, check out Cinematic Sunrise. It's Craig Owens' (singer of Chiodos) side project. So that means same vocals, same songwriter, just a different genre and style.
IMO they sing about less serious stuff. Definitely none about losing faith in humanity for whatever reason.
I don't measure "mainstream" by a band's level of success among the population. I measure it by musical content including form, structure and whether or not it pushes the level of "acceptance". People tend to accept a piece of music more if it fits in with what they are used to listening to. I'm looking for what i'm not used to listening to i.e. not this band. Tool was just an example of progressive musical content compared to Chiodos.

I grew up listening to Miles Davis, Led Zeppelin and John Coltrane's free jazz era and if you've ever listened to true free jazz, anything else feels and sounds mainstream. I've come to the decision that this is their most epic song ever concieved of. If you don't believe me, listen to all the guitar and piano work going on behind what Craig's saying. The lyrics not so much, but this definitely is a prime example of godliness.
Bullshit!!! Chiodos was amazing live!!!! I saw them play with LP and Coheed and they were just incredible. Every aspect of their performance was great. My favorite band there.

Besides this band is a little too mainstream for my taste as of late. I've been more into musical complexity lately. Ever listen to Bjork's old band sugar cubes or porcupine tree? Pretty decent. You might want to give Tool a try too.

And btw, if you want to hear some songs that could make more sense, check out Cinematic Sunrise. It's Craig Owens' (singer of Chiodos) side project. So that means same vocals, same songwriter, just a different genre and style.
IMO they sing about less serious stuff. Definitely none about losing faith in humanity for whatever reason.

I don't measure "mainstream" by a band's level of success among the population. I measure it by musical content including form, structure and whether or not it pushes the level of "acceptance". People tend to accept a piece of music more if it fits in with what they are used to listening to. I'm looking for what i'm not used to listening to i.e. not this band. Tool was just an example of progressive musical content compared to Chiodos.

MAINSTREAM!? ahahahaha!!! Chiodos is everything BUT mainstream! Mainstream bands have lyrics that mean nothing, like the Jonas Brothers! "This is an SOS, don't need a second guess!" Wtf does that mean? I agree with you as well. I probably should have clarified what i meant by mainstream. I grew up listening to Miles Davis, Led Zeppelin and John Coltrane's free jazz era and if you've ever listened to true free jazz, anything else feels and sounds mainstream. To me Jonas brothers came off of some assembly line with high school musical and mylie cyrus so i agree with you completely. Also i'm talking musically not lyrically. In fact lyrics aren't really too important to me, i mean kind of but...

Someone makes a simple observation that doesn't seem to convey undying worship for this band and they get spammed by people who continuously jack off and or fingers themselves to their albums. Bullshit!!! Chiodos was amazing live!!!! I saw them play with LP and Coheed and they were just incredible. Every aspect of their performance was great. My favorite band there.
