Having a slow or stalled car on the grid is very dangerous, the backmarkers tend to see them way too late to do anything about it and worse still, the cars are often fat with fuel. Burti was lucky here, the crash has echoes of the one that killed Riccardo Paletti in 1982.

@daedalusrho I think the start to Imola in 1994 showed that too. Hockenheim has a lot of grass next to the track on the pit straight though, the fans are right next to the track in San Marino, and I think I remember a wheel, maybe 2 flying over the fence into the crowd. Goes to show the fans can sometimes be just as vulnerable.
