Mexico is not that bad. I lived there for 5 months and nothing ever happened to me. Really depends on where you go. Mexico City is rather safe, Ciudad Juarez is the bad zone.
We just went as a family, because it was planned far, far in advance. It really depends on how you go. Cruises for example, will only go into guaranteed safe ports, and have constant military escort. They aren't going to risk the absolute devastation that would happen to the company if they got people killed. Sure, it was unnerving as all hell to see big military men with guns at a Walmart, but precautions had to be taken. We had fun!

Stats per 100 thousand people Mexico vs USA: total crimes 1500 vs 4000 USA ; rapes 14 vs 39 USA; theft 112 vs 2445 USA; aggravated assault 136 vs 310 USA; auto theft 139 vs 432USA, the only thing higher in Mexico is murder at 13 vs 6 USA, however discounting drug dealers killing each other, again the stats are hugely in favor of being safer in Mexico. Compare the Mexican overall murder rate of 13 vs New Orleans of 66 per hundred thousand.
