This is great, but I don't understand. Weren't you afraid when you introduced them? When I had my cat and hamster first meet I had the hamster in a hamster ball. When she followed my cat around and kept bumping into him and my cat just ignored her I eventually felt confident enough to let them meet without the hamster ball. How did you just let them meet like that unprotected?

@gooooblaster1800 A cat isn't a snake. It can't open its jaw that wide. A cat beats its prey around to weaken it first, so the prey can't fight back once the cat starts to eat. It's hard to eat something when it's still alive, after all. It could just end up getting a claw in its eye, or something.

Hunting is a skill that needs training. Mother cats train kittens by providing them weakened prey for them to learn to kill. House kittens don't know how to kill, and aren't starving enough to try.

@gooooblaster1800 Another interesting bit is that since cats (and rats) are social creatures, they can be raised to think of other species as a part of the family. They may kill a rat they don't know, but they won't hurt one that is familiar to them... In the same way that a dog will bark at a strange human, but it will wag its tail at a familiar human.

I'm so sorry that you have a problem with domestic rats whatever that problem may be. However, if you considered thaking them up as pets, at least two or more, it might uncloud your mind and you'd realize how people can love such creatures as these and such prejudice is unwarranted. I once was able to bait the neighbours cat by dragging a reed along the ground, it would chase after it and slap its paws on it. I always thought it a predatory thing and the cat going after the rats tails like that looked like a bad sign.

Makes sure yours rats are not getting scared or nervous. Otherwise they will sweat fear pheromones. And those pheromones can aggravate predators like cats and dogs into a hunting mood. So when your rats show no signs of being afraid of your cat, like those in the vid, they dont sweat those pheromones and your cat wont smell them as potential foodsource. Then it only depends if your cat likes a little company;)

Thanks for the good advice. Our one male rat is timid and so I am protecting him and trying to introduce him  very slowly , making sure the kittens don't jump or chase him. At this point I usually introduce Vincent , the rat, to the kittens when they are sleepy and/or napping. I think my female kitten's personality will allow them to be friends eventually. And it's funny, the male kitten is more afraid if he sees the rat, and stays away.

Our rats were a year & a half old when this was shot. Unfortunately they didn't have a lot of access to the cats after this. Any time the cats were in the room with the rats they hovered over the cage. Sadly, the multi-coloured rat, Maisy, passed away last month. Cyber is also not well and seems to have a large tumour. They do make wonderful pets though, especially if you take the time to spend with them. Thanks for all of your comments.

@spaguyswife My rats both got terrible tumors and ded from them I advise you to have them put down before they die because the tumors can grow surprisingly large and cause the rats to have alot of pain and trouble just moving. nice video btw
