I think you misunderstand the point of the coil. The coil is detachable from the beaker so that you may freeze the entire coil instead of adding ice (notice how there is no ice catcher). Using ice could mean inhaling frost with your smoke, which is harmful to your lungs. Illadelph goes out of their way to provide the best smoking experience by eliminating the need for ice - you should pick up a glass rod for heating the bowl pack too. Freeze the coil, take the ice out of the beaker.

They do make your hits smoother, but their main benefit is that they keep your pieces clean. SUPER clean. I've heard that bong water is drinkable if you use a carbon filter before the water.
