Why are bears obese?

@mosichat bears don't HAVE to be "obese." In fact, the "bear" term was originally used to describe men who were HAIRY and somewhat stocky/muscular, perhaps. Some would say that the term "bear" has morphed into the "girth and mirth" type of man, as opposed to the lumberjack image some of us think it was/should be.

You'll see that most of these so-called "bears" here are not particularly hairy or in shape. I can think of other members of the animal kingdom that they resemble more than "bear."

@akfurlover. You're correct, bears don't HAVE to be "obese." I too have noticed a trend of associated obesity with the "bear" genre. You and I both know the risks of obesity - increased incidence of heart attacks, diabetes, DJD, weight associated co-morbidities, etc, etc ad nauseum. I'd rather see buff, fit, in-shape bears or ANYONE for that matter. I think when "Bears" portray themselves in this obese manner, it encourages an unhealthy lifestyle... not cool.
