  • Thumbs up if you saw the ad for this...

  • I think they should make a Songsmith 2, with styles that aren't based on MIDI or maybe use different instruments for the MIDI than the sounds from the 90s...

  • I think he's wearing the same shirt as in the ad... the horrors!!! :O

  • I meant 30 dollars

  • Microsoft, huh? So it's pretty easy to use?

  • Last comment @ jephstiph.

  • I think it looks pretty cool. I mean it doesnt have much features. AT ALL. But for 300 Dollars, I think I'm gonna buy it some time. I don't think I will ever use it, but it's a good product that maybe is gonna help making a beat or something.

and again 30 bucks you can just buy just for having it. Why does everybody hate it??

  • STOP MOVING YOUR HEAD! jeez your just as bad as in the ad

  • They should have asked them why they used a Macbook Pro in the video...

  • Oh God. This is gonna be Skynet. People will be travelling back in time to destroy the research and kill these Microsoft guys to prevent a future full of soulless drivel music.

    Sarah and Me? Fuck off.

  • 0:33 " We looked at the statistical relationship between chords and melody"

Who's record collection did they analyze ?? Wesley Willis ?

  • OMG I was thinking the same thing. ROCK AND ROLL MCDONALDS

  • You're musically illiterate. The algorithm the program uses for the harmonic analysis doesn't have anything to do with which auto-accompaniment style Songsmith uses to realize the harmony.

  • Actually, maybe this would work on a Windows Mobile device? would be pretty cool if it did...

  • Wow, people seem to feel really strongly about this. Is it not just a useful tool? Scenario - you have a dicataphone or mobile device that you mumble melodies that come to you out of the ether into. You cant play too good, this can help with suggesting chords?

I doubt if the backing tracks will be of much use,but the analysis is pretty cool no?

  • I sorta see you point, but, will Microsoft at all make this as a programm for cellphones etc.

I guess what would be interesting for beginnermusicians/electronic"producers" would be a vst-version of this programm.

    Greetz

    Strategy

  • its only $30 (£20 ish) how can you knock it... Even as a daft toy its pretty good :)

  • if you lack talent and / or motivation, this is your product. if you have any self-respect, maybe you should look elsewhere.

also there's a 90% chance that those 2 microsoft guys will go have sex immediately after this video.

  • just the thing for talentless wankers ie DJs

  • Best part was the mighty Spectrasonics banner in the back. Me wants..... the banner that is....

  • It seems to me that there is a lot more to music than just matching a melody line with a chord.

    How about the rhythm?

How about the beats per measure?

How about the instrument being the accompaniment?

Also, if someone sings ad lib like that, doesn't that fix the tempo at virtually no tempo at all?

What happens if a person sings a very slow melody, and off-tempo? What does the accompaniment formula do then?

I would have thought that music creation is much more involved than an algorithm.

  • wow

this would making music making more easy then ever. I want the analog era back!

    (this is cool thou :)

  • haha so cheesy.
