When the list references the "fastest" aircraft in the world it always helps to actually LIST the speed they travel at. Otherwise it's just another presentation of airplanes with no information whatsoever. And it was a *slideshow* at that :(

Additionally, as already stated by others here, the American space shuttle isn't exactly in the "aircraft" category. It's more a space vehicle than anything else.

Pretty silly list, sorry to say. It's just seems kinda random in your criteria. At least two of the "planes" were not air-breathing (they were rockets). And the X-43 was unmanned.

You just as well could've thrown in the Apollo Command Modules. They were (partially) steerable in atmosphere and on interface they were going much faster than the shuttle orbiter.

SR-71 is still the fastest manned, air-breathing plane of all time (unless I'm mistaken).

The X15 is experimental designed for possible space flight....The X43a is a concept and not in production The shuttle is nowhere near the fastest as its powered by external rocket... The SR 71 Blackbird is a real previously used aircraft and the only 1 you got right in the top 4 it was so fast the procedure if a rocket from ground or aircraft was fired was simply to speed up and out run it no other aircraft in the world can do this.

Scram jets, space shuttles and rocket planes aren't "airplanes..." they're different forms of rockets with wings attached to them. (Scramjet isn't a rocket, but it isn't manned flight either).

The Space Shuttle isn't an aircraft per say. It makes 18,000 mph in a rocket configuration. The same thing goes for the X-15... these are rocket craft/space planes.

The X-43 on the other hand may qualify for the fastest aircraft.

Though it does not hold any people so the fastest manned jet aircraft is the the SR-71 Blackbird topping around Mach 3 or something like that.
