The F111 remains the finest, long range, deep penetration all weather precision strike platform in the western inventory.. Paul Dibb wanted to get rid of them and now he’s succeeded.. The F18 Super Hornet cant go a third of the range, cant carry a quarter of the payload and can only go one third of the speed of the F111 so why get rid of F111... answer Labor doesn’t want us able to strike China and North Korea Labor doesn’t want us to able stop commies
@7nordic it was the liberal party under john howard that persued the idea of the F/a-18 super hornets to temp replace the F-111 , it hasnt got anything to do with labor they issued a review of the decision and to see if it was viable us trying to order the F-22 but it wasnt viable.
said farewell to the pig last Friday, was choked up seeing the last ever flying F-111. what an awesome aircraft. 37 years in Australian service, keeping us safe.

Well I am sad to say that the RAAF flew the F 111's for the last time on Fri 3/12. They gave them a farwell and finished it off by one of them doing a dump and burn for the very last time.
I hope the RAAF are going to keep a couple for demos etc as they are a unique plane and served for such a long time in the RAAF. I bet you Americans are so surprised to see them still fly as they are such an old plane. But they are still a very capable plane as they have been constantly updated with the latest equipment. Oh you should see them when they do a dump and burn, such an awsome sight.
I still can't believe we only have a couple of months left with the F-111. I'm sure the Super Hornet is a fine aircraft but there's just something about the old girl I'm going to miss.
Many might not know this (and no offence meant to Russians or anyone else), but this aircraft stopped the proliferation of Soviet missile bunkers during the Cold War.
The Americans put them on British soil and the Soviets knew they had a problem.
25 tonnes of aircraft, 20 tonnes of munitions. Mach 2.7, less than 100 metres off the ground. Pretty hard to stop back then, and nothing will probably ever rival the Mighty Aardvark in the future. The rules have changed..
@Quokka57 In my humble opinion, the RAAF shouldn't retire them. Unless the airframes themselves are reaching their best before date. For such an old plane they've proved their worth, they are still viable!
hate to say it, they already are retired.. we are just waiting for the f-35s to come that and SUPERHORNETS... i fort for these beautiful planes.. they were my dream my whole life and been in my family for several generations... every time i see them they make me shed a tear atleast..
Im just gonna say when watching the air craft please saty on the left of Vegas near the speedway.....Im tired of going out there to chase people off. Oh and the races are going on right now so best bet is to stay away completely.....
They flew over my house as they departed Amberley (Brisbane) last week, saw them with the long range tanks and knew they must be headed to Red Flag :)
Interesting they performed their break at such a low speed with the wings swept forward. Typically, swing wing planes will perform the break with the wings swept back to utilize the increased induced drag since they fly at a higher AOA to slow down faster in the turn, and sweep forward just before they roll out onto the downwind. Very pretty plane. I remember seeing them all the time as a kid when we still had them in inventory.
@spins321 ...at their home base at Amberley they do the same..quite awsome to watch them come in from the east, make a hard right just above the gum trees then approach and peel away over the tower with wings fully forward..i will cry when they retire and i will never see one again
its a shame i wont ever get to see a dump and burn... now there gone from riverfire too

When we Aussies retire these at the end of the year it is going to be a BIG mistake :(

@777Timbo Can the RAAF F111s be refueled in mid air like the USAF versions can? I know it may be a dumb question, but just curious.
336kgf 1 year ago
@336kgf Yeah they can. They use the boom type of refueling system

Droolworthy.
I live near Soesterberg Airbase (formal USAFE base), and we had at least 2 Lakenheath or Upperheyford 111`s visit the base every month or so.
I really miss the 111.
