I agree with all of those but I would add It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back by Public Enemy, Liquid Swords by GZA, and also Only Built 4 Cuban Linx by Raekwon but good list
a classic hip hop album is one in which you could put in and listen from start to finish! without pressing the fast forward button! snoop doggs first album was one and also nas's first album was one of the best! have you notice a classic hip hop album is always the artiste first! i think thats when they are most hungry!
I think that the life after death album should be ranked higher then ready to die. They are both classic albums that u can listen to all the way through but the fact that l.a.d. is a double disc CD puts it ahead in my opinion. The only classic double cd album ever!

i will always jam to ilmatic , . Lifestylez ov da poor and dangerous-, the big picture, ready to die reasonable doubt. basically everything 90's. I jam to this and the 90's isnt my time, im in the time where lil wayne is considered a beast even though hes not that good.

@beastaller2 ahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahah Eminem 1st??????? He has half the lyrical blood thirst of the emcees named above, nothing against him but lets be realistic, eminem studies biggie and big L like a nun does the bible, a classic isnt a classic until time itself proclaims it, what has he made that send shivers down your spine when listening to music, no doubt he makes great music but I prefer music that not only I can hear but feel as well therefore I disagree, thats just my opinion.
@fukwaynecampaign2 the wordplay, rhyme scemes, punchlines, flow and just eminems overall aura on the album give me chills on every song its crazy.. a classic is a classic based on the music, not based on time..
@beastaller2 thats great and all that but hip-hop isnt based all on punchlines and flow, its 50% tone/frequency/setting and 50% actual rhymes/topics/free-style the best example of this is Gangstarr, GURU flows like no other while Premo is on the cut, , the greatest music products came in duos nd groups, CL and Pete Rock, Gangstarr, Tribe, Wu, Main Source, Eric B & Rakim, no one single artist can touch that simple fact, one man can only do so much... with this said have a nice day XD
@fukwaynecampaign2 all of the things you just mentioned eminem does better than anyone iv ever heard in this album... gang starrs great but no duo will touch big or pac or nas ... ever... period..
Your list is great! but here are some albums what are great enough to be in a top 10 or 20. 1. Madvillainy - Mad Villian 2. Mm..Food - MF Doom 3. College Dropout - Kanye West 4. Captial Punishment - Big Pun 5. Phrenology - The Roots 6. The Mouse and the Mask - Danger Doom 7. Violent by Design - Jedi MInd Tricks 8. Things Fall Apart - The Roots 9. The Black Album - Jay-Z 10. Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star - Black Star 11. Only Built for the Cuban Linx - Raekwon
1. Illmatic 2. It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back 3. Paid in Full 4. Ready to Die 5. Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers 6. Raising Hell 7. Liquid Swords 8. Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... 9. The Infamous 10. All Eyez On Me/Me Against the World Honorable Mentions: MMLP, Death Certificate, Criminal Minded
i think its funny how people add dudes like slick rick krs-one and run DMC....I mean if they released their "classic" albums today u would be laughting at them. sure they are pioneers of the hiphop game and all but... only because its old it doesnt make it more classic or better. I mean, for example, if illmatic Ready to Die All Eyez On Me and Chronic 2001 was to be released for the first time today, they would still get classic status. im not hating just saying....
top 10 eastcoast albums: 1. 36 chambers 2. the infamous 3. liquid swords 4. illmatic 5. ready to die 6. enta da stage 7. doe or die 8. lifestylez ov da poor & dangerous 9. only built cuban linx 10. muddy waters

IMO: 1. Illmatic 2. Enter the Wu-Tang 3. Paid in Full 4. It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back 5. Criminal Minded 6. Me Against the World 7. Ready to Die 8. Straight Outta Compton 9. The Chronic 10. Aquemini
nice selection....maybe wouldn't have Lyte or Snoop in my list, but certainly got them both in my collection. No point me posting a list as it's much as. Would have to swap Doggystyle for The Chronic and maybe Lyte for Cuban Linx. hmm...no Eminem or PE. Haha....impossible task.
Gonna have to go check out Act Like You Know again though ;)
Great list! I agree with most of it!! I'd add "only built 4 Cuban linx" and "it takes a nation of millions to hold us back"...and ifu hav "doggystyle" then u should hAve "the chronic" that's basically it tho. Great list!!
@LP640ROADSTERdk probrably, but the vid was posted in 09, recovery didn't exist at the time, though it is one of the best hip hop albums of the decade
1. illmatic 2. Ready to Die 3. Enter the 36 chambers 4. Low End Theory 5. Aquemini 6. Me Against the World 7. Reasonable Doubt 8. Masters Of the Universe 9. Straight Outta Compton 10. Lifestylez of the Poor and Dangerous But..the list changes. Thats just what popped in my head. Theres no diffinitive list lol. illmatic has the top spot on lockdown tho.
lol it's hard to argue with your list, but i would only make 2 changes, i would have chosen Me Agaisnt The Wold by 2Pac instead of All Eyez On Me, All Eyes on me is good but lyrically MATW his the best work of 2Pac IMO and Lyte as A Rock instead of Act Like You Know, it's a good album but Lyte As A Rock is a beast, one the the best albums i have ever heard. You should have made a bigger list :-)
Murder, Madness, Mayhem, no one brought that to the table before Eminem. Maybe the color of his skin had an impact on his record sales, but his lyrics were undeniably creative, sick, and twisted at a time where no one wanted to go there. He grew up in tough circumstances like every other rapper, but his story was unique, it involved prescription pills and a crazy mother. Anyone who lives through that shit is truly fucked up enough to spit about crazy shit without trying to sound crazy.
1. Illmatic
2. The Infamous
3. Enter the Wu Tang
4. Reasonable Doubt

@beastaller2 ahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahah Eminem 1st??????? He has half the lyrical blood thirst of the emcees named above, nothing against him but lets be realistic, eminem studies biggie and big L like a nun does the bible, a classic isnt a classic until time itself proclaims it, what has he made that send shivers down your spine when listening to music, no doubt he makes great music but I prefer music that not only I can hear but feel as well therefore I disagree, thats just my opinion.
fukwaynecampaign2 8 months ago
@fukwaynecampaign2 the wordplay, rhyme scemes, punchlines, flow and just eminems overall aura on the album give me chills on every song its crazy.. a classic is a classic based on the music, not based on time..
beastaller2 8 months ago
@beastaller2 thats great and all that but hip-hop isnt based all on punchlines and flow, its 50% tone/frequency/setting and 50% actual rhymes/topics/free-style the best example of this is Gangstarr, GURU flows like no other while Premo is on the cut, , the greatest music products came in duos nd groups, CL and Pete Rock, Gangstarr, Tribe, Wu, Main Source, Eric B & Rakim, no one single artist can touch that simple fact, one man can only do so much... with this said have a nice day XD
fukwaynecampaign2 8 months ago
@fukwaynecampaign2 all of the things you just mentioned eminem does better than anyone iv ever heard in this album... gang starrs great but no duo will touch big or pac or nas ... ever... period..

i think its funny how people add dudes like slick rick krs-one and run DMC....I mean if they released their "classic" albums today u would be laughting at them. sure they are pioneers of the hiphop game and all but... only because its old it doesnt make it more classic or better. I mean, for example, if illmatic Ready to Die All Eyez On Me and Chronic 2001 was to be released for the first time today, they would still get classic status. im not hating just saying....

how could outkast not make your list
their 1st 3 albums....no 1 can resist
how could they not b classics of course
when they averaged 4.5 mics in the source
i mean i look at all these lists but never see respect for the south
& no 1 can touch what comes out of 3000's mouth
but your list was straight, that's just a fact
but without any kast, it is still in lack

lol it's hard to argue with your list, but i would only make 2 changes, i would have chosen Me Agaisnt The Wold by 2Pac instead of All Eyez On Me, All Eyes on me is good but lyrically MATW his the best work of 2Pac IMO and Lyte as A Rock instead of Act Like You Know, it's a good album but Lyte As A Rock is a beast, one the the best albums i have ever heard. You should have made a bigger list :-)
jerudoriginal91 1 year ago
Murder, Madness, Mayhem, no one brought that to the table before Eminem. Maybe the color of his skin had an impact on his record sales, but his lyrics were undeniably creative, sick, and twisted at a time where no one wanted to go there. He grew up in tough circumstances like every other rapper, but his story was unique, it involved prescription pills and a crazy mother. Anyone who lives through that shit is truly fucked up enough to spit about crazy shit without trying to sound crazy.
