Meta-awesome. Set up with 6gb/s SSD and spinning RAID 0, Core i7-2920XM (Quad Core Extreme) with 8 mb L3, NVIDIA Quadro 2000M Graphics Card (2 gb DDR3), 16gb RAM, 95% Color Gamut FHD display w/built in Pantone Calibration, legendary Thinkpad design, build quality and keyboard. Runs cool. Very Linux-friendly. Cons: speakers are not good but hey, it's a laptop, what do you expect? Connect a good external sound system. Firewire 400 not 800 (nitpicking). Wish the hell I could afford one :((
To those calling this machine ugly: the design for the Thinkpad was produced by Richard Sappher, who has been one of the most iconic industrial designers of our time. The original Thinkpad model is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art.
If the biggest gripe folks have about this computer is the lack of good sound quality from its built-in speakers, the developers can pat themselves on the back for developing an awesome product. I'm proud to own a W520 - is is a legendary machine which has gotten me through thick and thin.
I would say its the best machine on earth, if not for the fact that the sound system sucks. It is morally wrong to sell a laptop worth £2100 without even a general sound system. I feel soo depressed.
Oh, didn't remember that laptops use a different form factor for their DIMMs. I can't find any ECC SO-DIMMs either. They do make single piece DDR3 DIMMs that have up to 32GB on them. Nothing wrong with making a laptop that has just one socket for a standard DIMM. They could fit that in there. This way, you could use the Xeon processors like the E3-1275 (HD graphics) or the E3-1270/80 (without HD graphics). Still, this laptop is quite powerful...
I don't know what SO-DIMMs are but memory with ECC protection has long been considered a feature of a server, workstation or any system critical compute platform. The Lenovo desktop workstations have ECC memory.
Well, I 'm thinking of buying that one, but I desperately need double precision for my uni work, are you planning to release a version with quadro 5010M?

Seriously wanting one of these for music production. Graphics are irrelevant and with good headphones so are speakers... Someone mentioned the handling of the machine in the vid, the build is supposed to be pretty solid. its not a crystal vase, its a laptop, a tool. Ornaments are a different category lol
@ThatWasPrettyFunny Older ones were better of course. I would suggest just getting a high spec W700 or a W510 if you want to be up to date on CPU tech, but any of the Intel family quads can run anything pretty much, even a Q9000.
@ThatWasPrettyFunny what sucks with laptops though is that their soundcards (including this one's) are integrated chips, & are crappier than desktop slot sound cards. you have to get either an external usb card (interface) or an express slot card; i guess THEN their sampling rate gets to 192 khz, but i dont know if the hardware acceleration gets any better with them.
im def looking into w520 too though--by far the best deal for most monstrous stats (at least $3-500 cheaper for similar dell)
Is there a specific reason the T420 doesn't have an i7 option? I wanted to get a 14" T420, but I couldn't get it with an i7, so now I'm considering this one. This is much bigger than I would have liked though. Is there a 14" model of this?
While I understand it's a workstation, I'd like to see a better graphics card for gaming. Really, the Ideapad line has awful design, LCD screen quality / resolution, and battery life. The Thinkpad series is perfect for a prosumer line, except for the video card.
I have one for sale see Ebay Brand NEW!! W520 2920xm for $2100 Brand NEW. 2920 Extreme CPU, 6GB Memory, 500GB and FHD Screen with 3 year onsite warranty. :)
@ruwanraj Yes, definitely. You're issue is probably due to the processor being slow or not enough RAM. I would try to upgrade your RAM first because it is much cheaper than buying a new laptop, unless you are searching for a complete upgrade.
I am customizing ThinkPad W520 Mobile Workstation with the highest specs but I only have one concern and that is its hard drive. I want to know can Intel 320 Series GEN3 600GB 2.5IN SSD SATA2 Solid State Disk Flash Drive fits in it perfectly. I need to know this before I proceed.

Been waiting for the track pad driver for Lenovo G560. Been years and they still ignore it. I just ask for a Driver for the track pad for Lenovo G560 that all i want.
@cue1337 It has more memory since you can have two harddrives inside the machine. The graphics card is a BUSINESS graphics card so it would be more suited for professional users who use modelling programs / photoshops. This does not necessarily mean that it is optimized for gaming but it should be able to handle gaming. It has the potential for a better cpu than T series if that is what you mean by "better" than the T series. and no it is not heavy...unless you call 5-6 lbs heavy.
I am seriously considering this laptop, but I'm not sure whether to get the HD+ or FHD screen. Does anyone find that an FHD screen makes text too small? Which resolution does the laptop in this video have?
Can you connect an external 3D capable monitor (120Hz) to the W520 with Quadro 1000M, and have the laptop send the signal in 3D (with 3D glasses)? Disregarding/disconnecting the laptop monitor.

@TheMontegonian We are thrilled (and somewhat amused) by the response to these unboxing vids. (This is our 3rd in the series.) They are real simple for us to do--one take obviously. Look for more soon...
@LenovoVision yes, keep making this kind of unboxing movies in the future. Your commercial videos, doesnt go this spesific into the pc, and other unboxing videos only shows whats in the box. Your unboxing video, is perfect. :) yeah!!
I think that I'm going to sell my MBP for this just for the optical bay latch. I am so freaking sick of opening up my MBP and stripping the screws just to seat my second HDD in the Optical bay.
@shashu11 It's a "fake" unboxing so to speak. I'm sure they already took it out once to check if everything was alright in there. I've seen other unboxings and of course they're always in a plastic bag.
@GekiBaka Actually this was a system we had in our Lenovo Customer Center and we were surprised to find the machine out of the plastic when we opened it -- one of our colleagues must have beaten us to the "unboxing." Sorry if we lose style points for that!

@TKMVillar the screen used for the particular 95% gamut 1920x1080 panel is difficult to find. The part number is B156HW01 V.4
You can upgrade, but you'd either have to scour the internet to find the exact screen, or get a different FHD panel that won't be as good (60% gamut)
Pretty much any 15.6" 1920x1080 panel will work (aside from the IPS panels on some HP and Dell laptops)

Great review, great machine! I would like to have the option of AMD FirePro graphics though.

Great! A durable moviestation with USB3! Any other uses for a 16:9 screen?

I think that I'm going to sell my MBP for this just for the optical bay latch. I am so freaking sick of opening up my MBP and stripping the screws just to seat my second HDD in the Optical bay.

No plastic bag around the laptop when it came out of the box?
shashu11 10 months ago
@shashu11 It's a "fake" unboxing so to speak. I'm sure they already took it out once to check if everything was alright in there. I've seen other unboxings and of course they're always in a plastic bag.

@GekiBaka Actually this was a system we had in our Lenovo Customer Center and we were surprised to find the machine out of the plastic when we opened it -- one of our colleagues must have beaten us to the "unboxing." Sorry if we lose style points for that!

@LenovoVision Nah, it's not that big of a deal. :) The important thing in this video was the "beast".
And truth be told, I'm looking forward to buying one soon. :)
