But even though The Smiths are relativly so much less popular, their legacy is so utterly indispensable and important to their fans. They're on a whole other level.

Jackson was concerned a lot more with technology and performance aspects of his art (dance/video etc) yet his 'message' and lyrics are relatively shallow when compared to someone like The Smiths. However, I suspect the Smiths would never have wanted to have been doing huge stadium shows (nor would their stuff hae worked in such a way.

@dienkonig33 except all they did was get recognized for music they 'paraphrased' from earlier songs. they invented nothing except their own popularity, which is extraordinary indeed. at least Elvis stated he covered blue suede shoes not steal the riffs and call it something else.

you just have to open your eyes, and realise that MJ was a HUGE icon in the pop WORLD, much bigger than morrissey.
i do much prefer morrissey's music by far! but no one can compare the talent and undebated, undisputed genuis of MJ's legend, which spanned decades and decades!
