One major thing they never mentioned was NEVER use ceder bedding for hamsters. It will cause upper respiratory infections and death.

@jlrsmiles Wet tail is when you hamster has diarreah.and they can die within 2 weeks.it's a serious prob for them.i got a hamster from petco.and it had wet tail.. i didn't notice till i looked up the simtoms my hamster had, and it's unnormal activity.. and discovered it.. i took it back hoping they would save her and so i they took it to the vet .. but it died her name was princess.but Luckly i had a 14 day warrenty on it and i got new one. i named her Smexii Lexii.but i really miss princess.(:

@jlrsmiles Wet-tail is a common infection that small rodents can contract very easily. It is the equivalent of something like dysentery. The animal will get a severe case of diarrhea and become dehydrated. Dehydration is very serious in hamsters because they are so tiny. A day without drinking can be lethal to a hamster. This disease is very contagious, so if you house more than one hamster, and if one hamster has wet-tail, it is very likely that they will all contract it.

@jlrsmiles The most common source of infection is stress. This is why many hamsters that are sold by pet stores commonly have the infection. The reason behind this is that most pet stores have animals shipped to the store. The shipping causes the animals stress, plus the added factor of being in a new environment. Thus the animals will have wet-tail because of it. Many pet stores sell young animals which are most prone to this infection.

@Rebecca03Rocks If it only does it sometimes, don't worry. It's normal for hamsters to sneeze every once in a while, just like almost any other animal. If it sneezes a lot, it might have a cold. The most you can do is let your hamster rest, and put a warm water bottle wrapped in towels in his cage. He should recover in about 3-4 days, depending on what kind he is, and how old he is. If he doesn't recover in at least 5 days, take him to a vet if possible.
