Sounds more like starting a turbofan engine than a server :P really impressive. Question: why does it take a minute from starting the powerup procedure to things actually starting to move? I suppose it's doing tests and stuff, but I'd like more details. :) Also, at 3:57 it says there's a fault in the dual ac power... redundant PSU failed?
In addition to the main processor there is a smaller one which performs basic functions such as power on/off, IPL and system diagnositcs; it is called the CPC (central processor compex) console.
Is there an Angry Birds application for that mainframe? Otherwise kids today won't have any use for a machine like that.. :) Interesting video - Those mainframe units are more impressive than todays.
Wow, apparently the interference it generates in your radio thinger (lol) must be from the electromagnetic field it generates, or something relating to that? Wow. I wonder how much electricity it pulls per minute. I wanna see the inner workings of that thing! Too bad it'd be a total waste pulling it completely apart, lol
cool machine! Must have cost a fortune when it was new. And now it's only use is to generate noise and heat... And in this case it's really great you saved one from destruction, so that other generations can see what high performance computing was in the past :)
The "Service Element" was IBM's replacement for the front panel on older IBM mainframes. Strange machines, in that they have essentially changed very little in the past forty years. Software written for the original System 360 will run unaltered on these machines.
From the development of the 360 up until the development of the PC everything IBM made used the same instruction set. Even the 5100, IBM's first personal computer, was designed to run 370 software and could even be made to emulate special machine instructions for certain systems by modifying the system microcode.
Did you work on this stuff when it was still in use, or how, did you manage to know how to get the stuff put back together, what to do, etc.?

I would know to inquire what you are using this mainframe for, sir.

I believe the fans are PWM controlled...don't they run at around 5200 rpm?

How many processors does this actually have in it?

See if you can get Linux on it...
