Kagan was to die in at this festival... He died about month later(cancer) after this wonderful performance in 1990. I am a violin player and I still cannot believe how a dying person can play like this... Thank you so much for posting
Thanks for uploading, this is an absolute gem. Two of my idols for the price of one! Simply the best playing of this piece I have ever heard and am ever likely to hear! Thank you!!
@ModernRitual For being a rarity... a good violist... (just kidding, I too am a violist, but I just had to) I'm honestly not sure, but I am also curious as well
@ModernRitual I believe winning the Bartok Viola competition did his career no harm, but surely just watching and listening to his playing here should answer that question adequately! The guy is totally awesome!!!
How wonderful to hear this piece. I like Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante for violin and viola too, but it's nice to hear this one getting some attention as well. It's true mozart liked the violin, but he LOVED the viola.

Thank you very much for responding me. The problem I have is that I feel quite abandoned sometimes: I play for a local orchestra and we used to be two violas, but my violist colleague left, so I am the only viola now (vs about 20 violins). Also, it seems we (violas) hardly get any melodies...Those are the reasons why I sometimes think of switching to violin although I prefer the sound of viola. Don´t you feel a bit abandoned sometimes being a violist or are you totally happy?Gracias Silvia-Spain
I think I would feel abandoned too if I was the only violist in my orchestra. But that's all the more reason to stick with viola; if you don't then your orchestra will be without a viola section, and that would truly be a tragedy. Having the melody all the time is overrated anyway. For me, playing the viola part in orchestra has allowed me to pay attention to the other instruments parts and how everything fits together. I feel like I have a richer experience of the...
I think sometimes when you have the melody, it's a lot easier to pay attention to only your part. Next time you have rehearsal, try to pay attention to the music as a whole as best you can while still accurately playing your part. You might be pleasantly surprised at what you hear. And when a melody for the violas comes along, you'll really be able to enjoy it to the fullest
sorry i just read through my first comment. The last sentence was supposed to be "I feel like I have a richer experience of the music when playing the middle voice"
but yeah, the melody doesn't make up the entire piece. The harmonies are what give the peice substance and emotion.

Alex, as you are a violist, I would really appreciate your comments. I am a bit confused. I do not know what to do...... I would like to be convinced that I have chosen the right instrument.....
I'm no music connoisseur, but hearing this song really inspires me to design and refine something magnificent.
Wow, I can make pleasant sounds on my viola. I pass them off as songs when I read from music... but I only inspire jovial dancing and singing. You... You are... and together... I don't have a strong enough command over my own language to express how delightful listening to this has been! Your expressed emotions complimented well here!

@sroldanmartin only you will really be able to determine if you've chosen the right instrument. . If you love the instrument and the way it sounds, then you probably have. For me playing the viola is what i do. It's what i want to do for a long time. And playing the violin for me is almost out of the question. I can play it, it's just uncomfortable because i have longer arms and bigger hands. Viola is perfect for me. If you ever need any help just pm. I've been playing for 7 years.
Kagan was pronounced too ill to leave the hospital in Lübeck, but he went nonetheless and his friends came. At the beginning of July he was helped on the platform. A special chair was found on which he could, almost standing, play the violin. Shortly afterwards he played for the last time, together with Yuri Bashmet one of the greatest of all Mozart's masterpieces, the Sinfonia Concertante. On July 15, 1990 immediately after the end of this, his own festival he died in Munich. tragedy...

What a beautiful bowing Kagan has! :D

this violinist has the most perfect intonation and bowing. He should be a soloist like the very famous violist he's playing with.
