Dave, love your videos, will be watching a lot more often... my question is: could you use the thorn as a whole, and just cut out a "V" pattern with a longer leg on one side, and use the shorter leg as the hook part? I have a "Show and tell" table for youngsters and the young-at-heart, and do some fire starting demos with flint and steel, and tell how the Indians used the locust thorn as an awl, needle, bird point (dart for blowgun was a new idea) and the "V" or "L" part as a fishhook! best, Ken
dude,i was out deer hunting,i had no tree stand,so i gathered up some vines, there was 2 big trees close together so made myself i nice comfortabe hammack 20 feet up,i almost fell asleep couple of times, lol
For those of you that don't have Honey Locust or Black Locust in your area, you can use the vine of a hawthorn tree. They are small shrubs with curved thorns and flowers. Start by cutting directly below the thorn and about 1 1/2 inches above, cut a notch in the top for your cordage, and strengthen the bottom with cordage and pine pitch. great for catching sunfish and it floats.
i usually love these videos but he spends over 10 minutes on how he makes his fire and his fire kit in a primitive fish hook video... i was a little disappointed- 3/5
Actually a BIC lighter will last longer than a Firesteel:
Light My Fire Army Firesteel: 10,000 strikes
Full-Size BIC: 3,000 lights
(these numbers are from the respective manufacturers)
Assuming an average 5 strikes per fire, you can start 2,000 fires with the firesteel, whereas, if you're careful, you can start 1 fire per lighting of the BIC, that's 3000 fires.
@aseglkj Bring both just in case your THEORY goes flying out the window ; ). Better to have it and not need, than need it and not have it. TRUE rule of a survivalist rookie....
@snakeeyes3211 guess what, I do :) (I usually also have several BICs and a box of matches in a ziplock bag)
I like honing my skills with the firesteel, because it forces you to use better tinder and build the fire more carefully. But if I had to choose, I'd choose the BIC hands down. There have been times when I didn't have the right tinder, when it was wet, there was just no way to get a fire going with a firesteel.
first off let me say ur videos r really great. the tip about the lip balm was a good one. but through my own experience its not good to make a fire on rocks like that. i did a while back before i watched this video, a couple of the rocks popped and sent hot coals about four feet in the air. luckly no one was burnt. thought i should give u a heads up. keep making videos ur doing a great and better job then most of the other wilderness people.

Great fish hook. I've used a variety of fish hooks and braided willow but a straight sharp peice of wood or bone is the only one I can hook them on. Advice wold be great on how to hook them whith hooks like that.
I have found that dryer lent works a lot better than cotton balls. It is very slow burning and catches a spark like you wouldn't believe. You should try it out.
No joke, we have this same tree, across the street. not as big though. but still wonderful goodies. i dropped a thorn and stepped on it, i can tell you, those things are sharp.
Dave, Great video as always. I just wante to give you a bit of info. The sawdust material that you found that was very fine is not from woodpecker feeding. It is called "Frass" Frass is the very fine textured wood feeding and boring as the result of many differnt types of wood boring larvae.
flower150 so what happens when your in an ( oh shit situation) and you lost your hooks, you are right in what your saying that it is a better idea to just bring some hooks but you have got to have a back up, that is what he is showing
While it is nice, and very satisfying, to be able to make your own fish hook it does seem like a lot of wasted effort. A dozen assorted fish hooks in your kit take up no room and are the right tool for the job.. And the time that you took making the hooks could be better spent actually fishing,
@maxpullara1 Thanks for you note. I'm going to have a go at making fish hooks, but I am sure that there has to be a better way than finding right-age shit, charcoal and pitch.
Unfortunately I don't have video gear but I will try to keep you informed
i live in tennessee and i haven't seen a honey locust. what we do have is something called a thorny bodac (thats what i've heard it called) it doesn't have thorns like that but it has thorns on the limbs they are woody, shorter, and have a very distinct crosslike shape. they are really sharp (i found this out the hard way when i was four) would they work for this application?
Growing up my father taught me how to cut a hook out of bone or antler, I was just wondering if you have ever done so? I have also made a gorge and have had great luck with it. I am willing to bet that the thorns you used for this project would make a wonderful gorge. I need to brag a bit.... the last time I used a gorge I landed a n 8 lb catfish using a grasshopper as bait. I waited until the fish swallowed the gorge to set the hook, If one is survive patience is the key most of the time.
You are one hell of a teacher Dave! I have another variation of pitch glue, but I recall my uncle doing it the same way as you did in this video. This was another very informative video!
Hee Dave. If you go back to the honey locus (?) tree and look at the thorns real close, perhaps you can find some thorns that are ready-made hooks. I did in France (Ardeche) during my vakation there. Some of the thorns are long - like you showed- but others have different stages of side-thorns growing out of them (small>larger). I tried fishing with it but no luck. I think my hooks were too big for the fish?
PS: Could you turn down the volume of the into a bit. Its soo much louder than the rest
dave i've found that if you take a very small candle with you on your trip and light it ... it will burn long enough to burn wet sticks... had to use it last weekend for my ring of lean-to shelter
i don't live bye any loctus honey tree, i live in northeastern pa, what other trees could i use for the needles, spruce? pine? oak? Help, ps i found the blanket video never mind, what other trees can i use? im only 12 so help!!!!
LOL -- "This poo is a little too wet, and it tastes a bit too nutty also, so we're gonna leave it here and find something that's been cooking in the sun for a while guys." :)
I used some cotton balls with vasoline this weekend while camping and learned the importance of un-wadding the ball to catch the spark. Left wadded up, the cotton didnt catch at all for me. Real world practice!
Try to smear the vasaline on one side and turn that side in on itself. Then light the outer side that has no vasaline. It will catch easily and when it come to the vasaline, burn for a long time. That is also the way you can store them ready made...
@marcjacobi Good point. I usually slather the cotton balls with petroleum jelly prior to putting them in my kit. To light them, I tease out some of the cotton and a spark will do it. The result is an easy 7 minute burn and you can stretch it to 10 minutes if you roll the cotton ball over as it burns down.
Hey great video dave!! Have you ever used a thornas a fish hook? I guess its the same idea/design as your hook but already made.... great work though! i love your videos..
