I own this game. I even played it today. Hartford vs. Phoenix. The only game where you can do that with 3D graphics. Hartford won 3-2.

With the motionplus controller it is very intuitive, deking out a goalie is easy, as long as you practice long enough, and the lifting the stick feature by lifting the wiimotion plus is really quite neat, sure the graphics aren't there, but the gameplay sure is

@YOD5FED i don't actually own a wii, i only own an xbox and a DS...2k dominates the market when it comes to basketball sims (and football sims, beginning in 2013), but when it comes to hockey, ea totally steals the show...sure its presentation is bare bones but that's an area where ea has always lacked, but when it comes to gameplay and authenticity, it's not even a contest. graphics are heaps better also. the 2k games may be fun, but they're certainly not better than the competition.

Ah, to be 10 years old again. Playing this on my PC all day and not giving a damn. The gameplay may not be as real, but the music is great, and the presentation from the season/playoff structure to the pre-game hype up even announcing rivalries. For us 80s born hockey kids, this was gold. I also see that the national anthem isn't played pre-game anymore either.

I always played 96 and 98/99/2000. I had 97 later on, but never got around to playing much of it. I remember drooling when I saw PSX/Saturn edition in GamePro, though.

These days the developers just copy and paste the same game over and over again. Look at NHL 09 and then to NHL 12. There maybe is a few changes or addition. Nothing more.

Why is it like that? Console gaming. It slows down development, and developers will probably use PS3/360 another 5 years.

I remember how Great the commentators were in games like NHL 98 and NHL 2001. They were absolutely hilarious, epically on BIG hits or HUGE saves. THATS robbery or looks like he just got Ran OVER. The commentary in games like NHL 09 just doesn't seem that good anymore.

Great game. I had a joystick glitch back then where it acted like I was holding UP.

I remember emailing EA about it and the guy responded apparently without reading my message. The first sentence in my email was "I'm running the game in DOS mode." Then I described in great detail the UP problem. His response was "Are you running the game in Windows or DOS?" I should have been more patient, but I gave up on him right there.

These menus actually made me EXCITED to play the game in '97, as it probably was the best looking and playing hockey title on the market...the graphics were unreal at that time. Now, looking back, the gameplay and graphics are EXTREMELY dated, but the menus at least have retained their greatness...

I think this was the first sports franchise that EA moved to 3D. It also had separate DOS and Win95 executables, definitely an era-crossing game.

I should install it again sometime, it's pretty good and well presented. My only complaint with it was the "one timer" shots are too hard to execute, and you get punished for trying by losing the puck.
