Loved this movie. Felt a connection w the characters, the passion and the angst. It goes back and forth between 4 parts. The court room, the interview, the black and white flashbacks, and the awesomely animated telling of the poem..so it keeps things interesting all the way through.
I saw this and was like "... Deja Vu" and then I realized that pieces of his poetry had been in Little Brother, which is lying by my bedside, almost finished but not quite... and collecting dust. After midterms I am making sure I finish that book... and then I'll read more of Allen Ginsberg's stuff.
goddamit. of course lets focus and drool over the celeb. and ignore the talent being portrayed here. godd hahah this fucked up society is suring going down the drains
@IncognitoShhh hmm yah his beard does look off.. looking more like pubes. but when i look at this tiny flaw i dont size it up as a result of the film being cheapened but rather more as a result of the film enriching the audience's experience--for the next time they reread 'Howl'--animating AllenGinsberg's own words up off of its page... ... "who got busted in their pubic beards returning through Laredo with a belt of marijuana for New York," --Allen Ginsberg, 'Howl'
I just finished watching this movie, I have to say it is the best I've seen in 2010. Concerning all the arguments about Jack, Allen, and Howl I would like to say this;
Any great work of art, literature, or film that makes us walk away and be introspective is a masterpiece. This movie did it for me as far as; "what great thing am I doing with my life"?
Stop using the term 'beatniks' to describe the beat generation. It's an insult and makes you sound stupid. Also, this movie wasn't meant to embody the entire movement in 85 minutes; it was made to highlight the most influential parts of Allen Ginsberg's life as well as delve deeper into the opposition he faced during the process of publishing his famous poem, HOWL. You should really get your facts straight before you go tearing other peoples' opinions apart.
@xtrmsprts so you think you're an art enthusiast? I highly doubt that for sure. For if you think that this movie is art, you probably thought that Avatar was 'art' as well. This is not art; in fact, it undermines everything Ginsberg and all his fellow beatniks (u should know what that is w/out google) were trying to stand for. If you had any appreciation for art/history you would know this. So, before you jump down someone's throat, why don't you learn how to differentiate art and crap first?
@ForzaAquila no I agree with you, this looks terrible. Many of the critics gave it a bad rating, and I'll agree with them. Sure, its a film with american historical value, but I bet half the viewers/ people who commented against you don't even know who 1/2 the people who were mentioned are. The beatnik movement is long dead and gone, and to romanticize it would be an insult in itself in the memory of the beatniks. I won't deny that HOWL by Ginsberg was great/ a masterpiece, but this = disgrace.
The message of the movie..that there trying to get across..seems good..but this movie itself seems dull and lifeless..dont plan to go and see this one
oh, oh, oh! the way the guy read his poems had the cadence as Austin Powers when he would spit his beat-neck poems. was this guy "Allen Ginsberg" the source of that? if so i may just watch this film. the rhythm was... hypnotic ... man!
@ForzaAquila boring? leave your philistine musings unvoiced, son. Besides, Franco isn't the cynosure of this movie , that's Ginsberg. That said, franco seems to have done his hw.
@xtrmsprts ok kid listen up: everyone has their own opinions. apparently two people agreed with me. philistine? i don't even want to start up a racial rant. what makes you even think of attributing the adjective philistine to musings? fail.
@ForzaAquila racial rant? lol where did that come from ? so you're not only a philistine who can't appreciate art, but also one who has to actively restrain himself from blurting out racial rants. I like how you ended with "fail" ...reinforced with my philistine argument haha go to macdonalds man.
@xtrmsprts 1) where did your "where di that come from" for racial rant come from? 2) i'm not even near that part of that world and my profile clearly says: from italy. if you can't read you had better go back to school before even trying to strike up a conversation with me. 3) i dont eat at macdonalds. 4) you fail in every way. Lol.
@ForzaAquila Despite the neatly enumerated "points" you didn't say a word of substance. Anyway, I guess english isn't your first language... philistine means "a person who is lacking in or hostile or smugly indifferent to cultural values, intellectual pursuits, aesthetic refinement" I made this assertion because I found your "looks boring" argument indicative of a bankruptcy in aesthetic appreciation.
i disliked the fact that james name is bigger then allen's when they both are on screen at one time.....
disregard the above,james is an excellent and uniq on display at all times.

Wasn't ginsberg bald? And isn't Franco too good looking to be playing him? Did this movie go straight to video, cuz i don't remember it in theatres.
