My mom went to the the same high school as Abby Wambach (Our Lady Mercy) in Rochester, NY, She is as proud as our country is, if not more so. USA! USA! USA!
when i heard ian darke's emotional commentating, it gave me chills. than julie foudy came on and i fell asleep. then hope solo celebrated in front of the camera and i woke up happy
@pcelovebrds10 This clip will live in American sports history....same as the Donovan goal, same as the Miracle on Ice. And the sound of the ball hitting the back of the net is just the icing on the cake.
This is one of the greatest examples of the American spirit. They refused to give up, and refused to lose. There is no doubt that they were frustrated at all the bad calls, and the fake injury but instead of throwing fits, they used it as motivation. Not once did I see any of the players even remotely get upset. The U.S. is so lucky to have them representing our country. It is a privilege and honor to have all these ladies play for us. London 2012 here we come! Winning in mind, gold in our eyes.
@themadjack101 and the funny thing is she normally doesnt start and putting her in the starting line up was the only lineup change for brasil in that game
@brainwreck1 Have you noticed the popularity of WPS sky rocketing since the World Cup? Down a man and goal with seconds left, then scoring in the 123rd minute of stoppage time, and that's not memorable? This is one of the greatest comebacks in history. Just because a team loses doesn't mean that what they've done previously won't be remembered. When the Olympic qualifiers come around, I can guarantee you someone will mention the "Abby Wambach goal that saved the U.S.A.'s life in the World Cup."
@brainwreck1 it is hardly forgotten everyone is still talking about it besides, soccer is now the new thing to do in the usa FACT! both of their games this fall are televised (espn2 and foxsoccer) wps games are being televised and more and more people are watching soccer in general now. it was a bigger win that what people realize..plus people are stoked for the olylmpics next summer and 2015 world cup more than they are for the mens in 2014
*sigh* now it's back to watching WPS with horrible camera angles. :(
I tried watching some of the Asia Cup games and even the U-20 World Cup. Shits boring as hell. The men cry for fouls when they trip over their own damn shoelaces... -.-
i cant help but smile everytime i watch something like this, its amazing. the best goal i have ever seen. i will never get tired of watching this. The feelings and emotions of this game will last forever
Even thought we lost the World Cup I think the USA in general grew closer, this goal was simply amazing! Watching it now after a few weeks after the cup still gives me the feelings to jump and scream! So what if we didnt win the world cup? There is the Olympics These women are amazing role models to people of all ages. Women's soccer is so much more thrilling to watch! Abby's goal thanks to Megan's cross, or Hope Solo's save on the third pk are the the perfect example of playing with heart. USA!
Well, I was by myself watching this and I couldn't even scream when it happened. I just sorta fell off the couch and slumped forward over the coffee table. Good times.
I had stepped out of my room to rant to my family about how the ref was a idiot and Brazil faking injuries and when i came back in the room and saw the score i had to apologize for my rant :)
for me this is one of my all time favorite sports moments. The others are David Tyree's helmet catch when the NY Giants played the Patriots in the Super Bowl and the third is Mookie Wilson's amazing base hit in Game 6 of the World Series oh so long ago, but not that long....
@benjsmit No, because it proves Americans can't call soccer. Hire Gus Johnson! He could make ant races sound exciting. (But have him train for a year on Premier League matches.)
I agree, Americans can't call soccer. Ian Darke has been on and off rated as the top English Premeirship commentator, would you prefer the uber-obnoxious latin commentators saying GOOOOOOOOOOOOOALLLLLLLLLLLL, GOAL GOAL GOAL, GOLASO GOLASO GOLASO?? Most non Spanish speaking peeps would prefer the English commentators. I'm assuming here but....
@benjsmit Between Darke and Andres Cantor, I'd take Darke anyday. But since ESPN is investing so much into the sport, they should invest enough in sending one of their top American broadcasters to England, learning the game, learning how to call the game there, do Premier League matches on ESPN, and then having them be the U.S. teams' voice.
A decision by the gold medal in Beijing three years ago, the arbitration was extremely damaging to Brazil that ended up unfairly defeated by the Americans, have not seen any comment here about it. It always happens in football and miss the arbitrators favor one team. If Brazil were as dishonest as some here are saying was so lacking in having made a goal Rapinoe and probably would not have happened, so it was done more fouls in the game and would not have lost.
They're all amazing. They have so much heart on that team. And I love how Abby was back at kickoff and acted like nothing had happened, she got over her excitement, and was ready to play!
@TheBooster96 I know!! They really need to give Megan more credit. It seems like in every interview the reporter is like "That was a great header!!" well who gave her the cross for that header??? :P
@DaKoolA1dMan sort...of....did that one not start with go go USA, can you believe this, certainly through to the 2nd round. Just stunning calls...both of them.. love them.
@Unit312J "And Donovan has scored, oh can you believe this, goal goal USA, certainly through! Oh it's incredible!" I just got the chills when I wrote that.
@CollegeOfMusic22 Uh, no. Great, great moment. But this wasn't an upstart beating the world power of the sport at their own game in the middle of the Cold War. Jim McKay said it best, that the Miracle on Ice was like a Canadian college team beating the Super Bowl champions. This was a great US team beating a great Brazil team. LOVED this moment, but not that big.
@CollegeOfMusic22 I don't think this will reach the "Do you believe in miracles?" level ever for a few reasons. A lot of it had to do with the fact that USA with the miracle on ice was a group of college kids who had just been grouped together months prior facing the world's best, including, of course, the Soviets who had smashed teams like the NHL all-stars. USA walked into the women's world cup picked as one of the favorites to win the tourney. I admit a great comeback, but it doesn't compare.
@ihodson19 In 1980, we weren't even expected to reach the medal round, but did and beat the greatest hockey team in the world. The miracle on ice was most definitely a miracle and an incredible feat, and, in my opinion and many others, the greatest sports moment of all time.
that first half was a joke and a few of the brazil players called her out on it. sure it wasnt anything like the stretcher gamesmanship at the end but diving 10 or so times is a joke. she did not get squashed, there were times where she just fell down.
great goal but wambach was unbelievable in the first half. diving all over the place, almost as bad as marta. very poor game in truth until the extra time dramatics. usa should have no trouble with france as they are weak in the final third, but they will have to play a lot better to win in the final, assuming they do beat france.
@Strikeb4ck thats baloney, she got absolutely squashed and mashed for lack of better words on one of them, there were a few that were light, but in no way can she be compared to the awful dramatics of the brazilians, thats uncomparable!
