This is one of my all time favourites songs. I owe much thanks to chissykim, my favourite YouTube's uploader, for posting this tune. If my understanding is correct, Joni wrote this song for Neil Young when he turned 19 who subsequently paid his respect by composing "Sugar Mountain" back to her.
I played this when my daughter was baptised. She's 17 now and such a beautiful girl. I would hate to see her go when she will go to college next year.
Even though I've had so many good wishes from so many people (and I thank all of yu), I am still sad. Yeah, that is normal. I am crying, tonight.(the 'experts' say that that is 'normal'--I say it is 'balls'--I HATE having thick eyelids!), I SO love this song...thanks, again.
This song came on the radio the other day while I was in the car with my mom. She turned it up and said, "Ooh, this song gives me chills." Whenever I hear it, I think of her. And I don't know why, but whenever I hear it, I just can't help but cry.
@chissykim. My little brother died quite suddenly, at age 40, recently (it was his heart). I used to sing this song to him, and play it on my guitar, when he was little (I am 16 years older than he) I sent this song to my mother via email, to comfort her. She had it included it in my little brother's memorial service. Thank you, for uploading a recording of a song by one of Roling Stone's 100 greatest guitarists, and the only female and the only Canadian (last time I checked).
@MicroWorldLover my condolences on our loss...may your brother RIP...and this beautiful, poignant and wise song by the very talented JM is a fitting tribute to him
@sixsixxsixxxx Joni's 'signature' song was in good company. We also had 'Amazing Grace', by Elvis, 'Morning Has Broken', by Cat Stevens (both of those recordings we found in our little brother's CD collection-we had no idea: we thought 'metal'). We also had Josh Groban's 'You Raise Me Up'. I sent this, via email, to mom a few months before my brother died. She insisted on having it--can't say I blame her. That man is headed for 'total opera', soon (I can hardly wait!). TYFY comfort.
@sixsixxsixxxx TY. It has not been easy-there have been a lot of comfort vids coming my way (yay!). We SO miss our little brother, and the granddaughters (my brother's nieces) are having trouble with this, as well., including my daughter. Some of them are less than 20 years old. Thank you for your well wishes.
@MicroWorldLover Hi, I know I don't have much info, and no videos, but your comment is beautiful. I'm much younger than you, and I'm sure you know more than I do. I always thought this song was about eternal recurrence, something Socrates believed in. Where we die, and assuming time is infinite, we are alive in the same way we are now. forever. I find your comment extremely appropriate. Imagining you will be singing this song to your younger brother until the end of time.
@grrrantw Yep. I'm almost 60 now, but I can still sing (thanks to all those voice lessons I took, as an adult). I wish I could have sung this at his memorial, but I was too choked up to do it, as you might appreciate. Thanks for your wonderful comment.
@jeffpoet Ty. You're welcome--I mean every word of every post. This song is phenomenal, in the 'greater scheme of things'. We will place David's ashes at a special place in a cemetary, on May 14, 2012, David's 41st B'day. Someone suggested Mom scatter David's ashes where he liked to camp and fish. Mom said, 'No'. She wants to have a place to 'go'. I can understand that.
@MicroWorldLover I always feel strange giving a thumbs up to comm ents like this, I sympathize and feel your loss, but hesitate to give a thumbs up to your grief know what I'm saying ? thumbs up any way .
My very favorite Joni Mitchell recording. First heard it back in the late 70's while visiting my very best friend, who lived in Boston at the time. We had gone to high school together, in SoCal, graduating in 1965. In 1973 Doug revealed to me that he had come out of the closet in 1970 and for the last 15 years of our friendship we called ourselves "the odd couple." He was a good man who died in 1988, at age 40, from AIDS. But our differences never kept us from being the best of friends.
Beautiful song, but I can't bear to listen to it. Too nostalgic, in a way.
I anticipate the sadness I will feel when my son (5 years old now) will eventually grow up. This song reminds me I must spend time with him now, before grows up and loses interest in spending time with his dad.
@hmshyperion I know exactly how you feel; my son is 17, and sometimes I can't believe how fast the years have gone by. In spite of all his activities, friends and interests he still likes to spend time with me, and I think that is because I spent a lot of time with him when he was younger. So treasure the times you have now. And know that even as he grows up the bond between father and son will continue to strengthen.
@hmshyperion I know..... My son is now 29 and is having a baby girl soon..... the time went by sooooooooooooooooooooooo fast........ in a blink of the eye....... life IS sad and lonely...... they do come back you know xoxo
I was introduced to Joni by my best friend of the last 28 years when we were freshmen at Lake Forest College. She then played it for me on my birthdays. We lived together for 14 years in Boston and every one our birthdays we played this song. I moved back to St. Louis to be with my family 10 years ago and still play The Circle Game on each of our birthdays. Love you Gwynneth and Ms. Mitchell.
My mother used to play this song for me when I was a child. She said it reminded her of me. I think this song is so beautiful, definitely my favorite song. :) Thanks for posting this song.

I love the cover art by Joni herself. Captures in a few lines and colors he entire hippy ethos. Oh I miss peaceful days.

@hmshyperion Maybe that's one of the gifts of this song, to remind us what's really important in a world that sometimes moves too fast.
