I worked on that boat when it was being built at C-Worthy Marine in Woodinville, WA, it had twin MAN V10 diesels and could easily run 20 knots - windows were stout shatter proof (2 inches thick?)
It was a shallow bottom glass boat for herring seining near shore - my memory isn't the best, but I believe the draft was less than 3 feet and was like a cork in rough weather.
It was a sister to the Nuka Point owned by Beaver Nelson out of Homer - those guys will have a story for their grand kids.
DAMN! I would never want to be in waters like that. Cold, windy, and wet. That's the name of the game. Props to the camera man and his crew for remaining so calm. "Okay let's start picking people out of the water."
I never asked them, but I assume no veteran fishermen would start across an open-water run through a notoriously snotty stretch of ocean using only an auxilliary engine capable of propelling the boat at 3 knots. It's a safe bet to assume that they were almost across when their engine crapped out.
Scary shit. I guess if there is an opening, you gotta go. Good to hear everyone made it out alright. This is why I stopped fishing on junk, not worth your life to get an extra trip in, especially running alone.
@Kingseiner Did you notice the power block was hoisted way up in the working position instead of being lowered to the deck and dropping the center of gravity?
Yeah, the only injury was when one of the guys came up out of the water between Linda's Draw and the tender where the video was shot from. When he came up, the two boats banged together and the fisherman got his chest crushed a bit. He suffered a collapsed lung but got a "chest tube" in our local E.R. and recovered just fine.
Holy shit. That's why you always run through with a buddy. That was stressful to watch, glad they all got rescued! You usually feel safe because ya always have the skiff to hop into, but it all goes down in that situation.
Not fun...
