Oh my goodness... now I can imagine Hitler saying defiantly, "If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can ever imagine... you do not know the power of the dark side."
This performance rendered by Sir Alec of the Fuehrer is absolutely priceless; though it's probably more accurate of Hitler before 1943...when he had a better command of his mental faculties. After Stalingrad, he suddenly seemed to have grown senile, detached and despondent. His drug use, parkinsons disease and the ravages of syphilis on his brain and personality ultimately left their mark on his persona which reduced him to little more than a mindless, lost and confused drug addict at the end.
Guiness, in this scene and other scenes, seems almost like he's portraying Hitler in a 'Santa Claus' like way with benign cruelty underneath - listen when he talks about those lebensraum plans for the russians.
I'm bothered by Hitler acting like a jolly British fellow. I do like that part with Fegelein giving him a gift. :D That clip could perfectly be used in a Hitler Rants Parody!
Alec Guinness is the all around greatest actor ever. This is the best portrayal of Hitler ever, and probably the best portrayal of a narcissistic-antisocial, delusional personality ever. The only reason Sir Alec's talent isn't given full credit is that he was also a comic genius ...and being able to do great comedy as well as great drama seems to be regarded as a strike against an actor!
i remember this film, when i was a kid it scared the hell out of me,the desperation of the suicide realy touched me,it was very well done,of course when i was a child i dident know much about the crimes of hitler,so i had some empathy for him
You realize Alec Guinness is one of the greatest actors in the world when he manages to make Hitler look like a really nice, cute and suave gentleman you want to hug!
The Guy that played Fegelein was also in Star Wars (The Empire Strikes back) as General Veers. He would later play the villian Donovan in Indiana Jones and the last Crusades.
The Real Hitler was heavily sedated during his last days. He did threw a fit when he found out that Steiner 9th Army could not launch the attack to save Berlin That scene is well potrayed (and parodied) in the film DownFal.l
Sir Alec Guiness is not famous for Star Wars. He made movies since the 50's, you never heard of "Bridge over the river Kwai" or "Tunes of Glory" or about a hundred comedy's, he was Peter Sellers hero, try "The Man in The White Suit", "The Ladykillers", etc.etc.etc. Look on wikipedia before you make a fool of yourself.
@92af They are both great, and good freinds, what a stupid comment. "totally way better" your grasp of proper English leaves much to be desired. I'm surprised you have even heard if Sir John Guilgud. Probably only seen him as an older man in "Arthur".
Are you off your fucking head? Robert Carlyle did a two dimensional performance: he simply played Hitler as a psychotic madman, almost autistic - do you honestly think such a "lunatic" could have woo over so many people to his cause? This performance is much better.
@xxeternalbeautyxx He WAS a psychotic madman. That's not the point. Sir Alec himself said it was one of his poorest roles. Carlyle played a young Hitler, which nobody knows anything about. Alec played him as the madman with Parkinson's disease, lots of eyewitnesses who STUCK WITH HIM BECAUSE THEY WERE BRAINWASHED NAZI'S, not normal people. Churchill had it right " A German is either at your throat, or licking your boots".
@locheelad2 I disagree that Sir Al said it was one of 'his poorest roles'. In Piers Paul Read's biography, he quotes Alec as saying it was one of his top three performances, you don't even have to read the book, it is actually written alongside the picture of Alec as Hitler!
They ruined this movie with the fake Eva Braun dialogue near the end in which she turned against Hitler, that was stupid and unnecessary, that's where the story strayed too far away from the facts.
@2:05 The real Hitler would never thank Fegelein.
