This is a nice, simple explanation of faces and polygons in SketchUp and how to reduce them manually. Too bad there is no free plug-in or built-in command to do automated polygon reduction in SketchUp models like you find in expensive commercial CAD programs (aka Polygon Cruncher).
if you make the circle, BEFORE EDITING IT, you click with your right mouse bottom on the edge and reduce the sections to 8 (with big structures 12). Hope i've been a help.
