  • Radhe Krishna. Good Morning Carnatic Musical Vocal Exponent, vidhushi sow.Sowmya ji, thank you very much for the lovely kruthi "Varananthu" sung by you, with your beautiful style. Jai Sri Ram.

  • Excellent performance by Sowmya. Mayamalawagowle or Gurjari = good discussion. Who shows more teeth = juvenile

  • she is the best !!

she one of the most precious assets of the carnatic musical world !!!

hope she lives longer and focus keenly on carnatic music !!

  • I find most of the responses talking about the appearance and smile in the artist. The lyrics also play a part here. Almost all the Thiagaraja Krithis are patho based as he begs the lord or complains to Rama. Singer cannot be expected to smile when she reciting a song where the composer is begging and complaining. One big exception is Muthu Swamy Dixithar. His songs are always a joyfull praise on the deities of various temples.

  • i think sudha ragunathan is the best......lol

  • She is a master of her art, no doubt.

    Azzy

  • Well .....any performance....any field...depends on thoso few hours of the performance....which is highly dependent on ones physical and mental and state of happiness.....and this song inperticular song is renders in this pace only ......and a song in a ragam like Gurjari....this speed is really apt i feel.....i have heard Smt Sowmya perform....be it the sahitya bhava or the raga bhava....she has been really good @ all of it ....

  • Remahariharan's observation as regards the US-visisting artists that ...'they almost have no time to lose if they had to fall sick ; is a 'matter to be rectified' - for sure !

    [vedapushpa]..

  • It is more that Sowmya's cited concert is faulted with an undue-slowness and lack of diction-variation and that does give an impression of her 'disinterestedness' towards her audience/her performance.

    knowledeify

  • I don't see a blemish. Moreover, slowness is where it belongs. Love it!

When artists from India come to the US , they not only have a hectic schedule, but they almost have no time to lose if they had to fall sick. In particular, I remember hearing Sowmyaji in NY and wondering why the spirit was so low, even though the level of music was so high. Later I came to know that Sowmyaji was running a high fever before and during the concert and that the organizers would not cancel the concert

  • I think the blemish in Soumya's music performance is more to do with the 'undue slowness' and inufficient 'diction-variation' - particularly as in the concert cited.

    knowledgify

  • There's no reason to apologize, you have the right to speak your mind too :-).

  • She is indeed a talented performer; that is absolute.

  • Mayamalava gowla??

  • This?? Mayamalava gowla?? Are you asking about this song. This is called Gurjari taught by the great Dr. S.Ramanathan.

  • Oooh thanks. Gurjari, what is the Melakartha for this?

  • Gurjari evolves from Mayamalavagowla, Sa riga ma pa dha ni sa sa dha ni dha pa ma ga ri sa

  • Thanks, It sounds so like Mayamalava Gowla. It is always a pleasure to listen to new Raagas.

  • She is so wonderful. Not only is her voice so beautiful, but her personal frequency is so high, that as it comes through her it is carried on her breath and fills the "area" with its benefits. Very healing. At least that's my experience.

  • wonderful ...... Sowmya

  • Brilliant!!! Sowmya Ji.

  • very nice Sowmya- all other female singers should learn from you- how to dress, facial expression etc. Note for Sudha & Aruna Sairam- learn from Sowmya not to expose your entire teeth while singing.

  • Yes, that is what is most important for a singer.

  • Really? I always thought the singing was the most important part singers.

  • haha....seriously

  • Really I always that that the singing was the most important part for singers.

  • what ever ... every singer has his/her own style they are all shishyas of great souls like MLV ..... if we like it is not necessary to comment bad about others ... let us respect them all ...

  • I'm sorry, I didn't mean to come out as arrogant and that I disrespected chandu, its just that it kind of irks me when people concentrate too much on how the singer looks/acts during a concert yet has a golden voice, and they will say that the artist is not good.

  • ...its because people are superficial

  • if it was voice only more ppl wud hv liked her. but we hav video as well. and if her face doesnt look appealing (i mean not beautiful and that) then ppl will be dissapointed and then is then reflected on their opinion. a smile is always good

  • un4getablefriend, indian music does not sell by smiles, gymmicks, and body exposure. I am drunk with the perfect divine rendition and ask for no more!

  • Any art is demanding and rendering is best left to the performer. What if the singer is ugly? I still respect and listen. Watch un-smiling Jesudas on YT. If someone pleased you with histrionics, he/she has misled you, as some mediocre modern singers do on the stage. Religion for music? I enjoy Choir songs being a Hindu. It is a big misconception that the singer is not enjoying herself. People do not smile while having sex! Just close your eyes and listen. Make your attempt to feel it.

  • this is my last reply. try to chew your favourite doll and you see what I mean.

what sounds good to ears need not look good to eyes. what looks good to eyes need not taste good.

  • you are correct in the sense that appearance affects the concert. A singer with a smiling pleasant face will always be better than that same singer with a brooding face etc etc.

However, it does not take away from her skill or her devotion to carnatic music. It is very difficult to sing like she does, and some people just cant help but have those involuntary facial expressions when they sing. She is definitely enjoying it, otherwise she would stop singing.

  • soumya is a great singer and knows the mathematics of music better than other singers. only a fool expect singers to show smiling face, that they are not expected to smile ,if one does the focus slips and at that moment singing loses its shine.Heisenberg's uncertainity principle holds in music as well.

  • People who go to rock or pop concerts here in America usually don't get a smile from the performers because their craft is singing not dancing. Singing does not come with a smile since the mouth needs to be able to work with the subtle sounds coming from the vocal cords. If one smiled often during a performance it hinders the production. With dancers, they usually don't talk while performing. Hence, smiling is important for them in order to engage the audience.

  • Most classical singers in India are like that, even the most famous Carnatic vocalist/veena player Veena Dhanamal didn't smile. The idea that a musician has to smile is irrelevant to what she is supposed to do. If one looks sad while singing or playing an instrument it is just concentration or possibly tiredness due to the heat.

  • only a total idiot would say something like this.

  • beautiful!

  • Excellent

  • Dear Karthik Suresh 2000, This raga is indeed Gurjari, It is a janya of Mayamalavagowla. The scales are as below.

    Aa: S R1 G3 M1 P D1 N3 S

    Av: S D1 N3 P M1 G3 R1 S

  • Thanks for the clarification. I also thought (not that I am any good at it) that it was very close to MMG if not the same. The only other gurjari that I had heard is "gunijanAdhinutha guruguhOdaye" sung by DKJ. So thanks.

    -m
