i don't think that sonic isn't really ripping off dbz cuz the chaos emeralds are used for some randoms powers but when collect all of them you turn super. but in dbz the dragonballs are used to call shenron so he can grant their wishes. for the characters the only thing that's same are the personalities! for example: shadow & vegeta: the're both bad ass, they don't like their allies goku & sonic, shadow has chaos powers & vegeta's powers is different from shadow. so it's not a rip off!

characterwise tails and krillin aren't alike at all. as far as power goes tails is was more useful than even sonic is in the games for 1. his invulnerability can be used to beat bosses without losing rings and 2 sonic can fly, but krillin has never had a head over goku in anything. how are amy and chichi alike other than the female companion type thing. amy is clingy and annoying, while chichi isnt clingy on goku but definitely annoying (at least to poor gohan)

Well, this isn't anything new. There's alot of anime's that or similar to both of these. Especially in character personality. Look at Naruto, Bleach, Rurouni Kenshin. For 1, except for Ichigo, the main characters all have this laid back, but honorable attitude. For another, each of them has main help from a native enemy. Naruto from Sasuke, Ichigo from pretty much all of Soul Society and Kenshin from the big dude with the huge sword (forgot his name)

Fun fact dragon ball z as a television show came out in 1984 (in japan) and 1989 (in america). so it is possible that sonic 2 in 1992 ripped them off with the emeralds and super form. While the super saiyan was first shown in television in 1991(The same year sonic 1 was released) the manga had the super saiyan form long before the television show. So with out a doubt dbz had the super form "and other aspects for that matter" at least 7 years before even the first sonic game.

when you really put thought into it, chaos emeralds and dragonballs really aren't alike aside from sharing the same total number. i mean they both have different properties (dragonballs having the abilitiy to call up a dragon to grant wishes. chaos emeralds simply give one near god-like power.) chaos emeralds also are in away absorbed by the user, and they don't necissarily scatter after use. also in the sonic games and comics the chaos emeralds aren't always a critical plot element.
