  • There's a YT video of him singing this in Yiddish.

  • nothin to do with his approval of it. Mandy is a method actor. Which means he lives the role to better understand and get into it. The darkness of the show for 2 straight years effected his life so he had to leave.

  • Does anyone know why he left Criminal Minds. I just got into the show and purchased the DVD's. He was amazing on this show; I was just wondering why he left after season 2 when it was such a hit.

  • @pokergalpoker He doesn't approve of violence on television, so he had issues with some scenes in the show.

  • @Trekkin4Always thank you for the response. It's a shame though because he was so believable in that role.

  • @pokergalpoker I know, he's such a good actor, I think he took a bit of the show with him, Gideon's relationships with Hotch and Spencer could never be replaced.

  • @Trekkin4Always @pokergalpoker Okay.. I get that.. but has ANYONE watched HOMELAND.. Snipers, Suicide Bombers, killing a man point blank to show loyalty?

  • So this is what Saul does to cool off from a hard day at work?

  • I can I can! thanks!

    Joe

  • THis is an oldie but a goodie. Mandy has been the cantor in his synagogue. for many, many years. I always thought he was more of a baritone than tenor, but nope, I stand corrected.

  • Great Jewish actor!

  • Hello my name is inigo montoya you ki-

    Well you know the rest (;

  • He's always gonna be Rube from Dead Like Me... to me

  • I am looking for a man with 6 fingers on his left hand! Inconceivable!

  • Have loved Mandy since I first fell head over heels with him in Yentl!

  • woww... he thinks really well. I'm impressed.

  • My name is Gideon. I will stop you with my manly singing.

  • si, es gideon, el mejor personaje de todos

  • He will always be Iñigo Montoya to me. :D

  • aahhh all i see is and remember is rube from dead like me miss that show ssssooo much

  • Seriously, if you haven't been to one of his concerts, you have never lived!!

    impecable voice,outstanding actor. Bravo Mandy!!

  • When was this recorded? He looks so young!

  • His voice is so beautiful that I've been reduced to tears.

  • Gideon....?!

  • I have been so burnt out on this particular song I couldn't bear to hear it. I just got goosebumps watching this indescribably talented and genuinely good soul perform it. For the first time since watching the movie as a child, I FELT this song. Even more so. I dearly want to see this man perform live.

  • @PhantomLexx

I was fortunate enough to see him live at the Kennedy Center several years ago. I'll never forget it as long as I live. He sounds exactly the same in person as he does on CD or in a video. He has the most extraordinary voice I've ever heard. I hope you do get to see him in concert!

  • His voice is so gorgeous. It's indescribable and so unique. So tender and velvety, and smooth.

  • @redsteelchair That sounds like a really good piece of cake...

  • I really liked his singing, but his hand gestures remind me of how the people in Italy gave me directions when I was there.

  • @AshillaBeige Bravo, hai parlato bene e hai ragione! Le sue mani mi da fastidio. Veramente!! Good, you spoke well! And you're right. His hands annoy me, really!

  • Such a nuanced performance. It takes a remarkable actor to be able to sing this the way he does, and not belt out every note. I especially love the way he asks "why, oh why?" from 3:04-3:06. Looks like he's about to cry with desperation. The only thing is that I find his hand gestures a little distracting...

  • I saw he in concert with my uncle johnny

  • I found out he could sing when I watched "Elmo in Grouchland" When he stole Elmo's blanket......I was babysitting the neighbor's kid and thought "WOW, Jason Gideon can SING!"

  • He sings the melody! All you young singers pay attention. The melody is written....so sing it....the actual melody line. Forget your ego vocal bravado...just sing the melody like Mandy does. OK? I mean OK???

    John-Hans Melcher The Quiet Drummer

  • @johnnyzing Oh! You understand!

  • Dear Mr. Patinkin, you are a force to be reckoned with! A Broadway icon who satirized yourself so perfectly (and hilariously) in "Run, Ronnie, Run!", and who crafted such a somber, believable portrayal of an FBI profiler in "Criminal MInds", proves you really can do it all. Maybe, one of these old days, I'll make it to the Great White Way and get lucky enough to watch you live. Thanks for everything.

  • @karmadhyana He also sometimes gives concerts in other parts of the country. Maybe he has a web site where you can see his concert schedule. He was on tour not too long ago with Patti LaPone.

  • I actually hate to admit that I discovered that he could sing from watching the Goobie Awards on the Criminal Minds DVD....

  • @brownsinman33 The only reason I know he sings is because I watched Run, Ronnie Run the other day

  • y'all are brutalizing meeeee

  • man he was in Dick Tracy doing a duet with Madonna too!!!!

  • oh! a surprise ending

  • The way he says "rainbow" sounds like Mickey Mouse.

  • he sounds like al jolson singing it,he looks hot though

  • has he always sang? o.O

  • @emityelhsa Yes, yes he has. Always. He won the Tony for his performance in Evita as che Guevara.

  • @HanBOHobbit VIVA LA REVOLUTION!

  • @GrandiloTroll Voted that one "thumbs up" - fo sho.

    I love Evita.

  • He's such a pretty person.

  • it's gideon!

  • Dear Mr. Mandy Patinkin, You are god. Thank you for being the most epically awesome person on earth. Thank you. The end

    Love me, MadameMadHatter

  • I saw Mandy Patinkin in Evita with Patti Lupone. That man deserved far more recognition than he got. He was probably one of the greatest theater presence ever!

  • who would have guessed Inigo Montoya/Gideon can sing so well!!

  • Gideon....

  • when was this? he reminds me of Alanis Morrisette....and prepare to die

  • My name is Rube Sofer

I sing musical theatre and reap souls

    Prepare to E-X-P-L-O-D-E!!!

  • Oh my gosh. I just died. Avigdor!!!!!

  • I keep thinking of Rube from dead like me. I just want him to hand out some sticky notes.

  • @orangetree4 amen. lol

  • Holy crap that is great! Check out him singing y'all are brutalizing me.

  • OMG...after seeing him in criminal minds and the princess bride, i couldnt imagine him singin XD

  • does anyone think he would be a good phantom?

  • Is NO ONE else distracted by the hands?!?!?!?!?!?!

What on earth is going on?!

  • NOW SEARCH "Criminal Minds Greatest Hits" for more awesomeness :)

  • Definitely NOT verging on Tiny Tim.

Tiny Tim rules, and so does this. Nothing alike though. Patinkin's is a much fuller voice.

  • Will he be singing more on Broadway in the near future? Will he consider making cameo roles on Criminal Minds..He is best as the "psychiatirc"profiler in Criminal Minds. CBS.please have him return!

  • damn.. i keep thinking him as Jason Gideon from Criminal Minds .-

  • @sadnearsight or Rube from Dead Like Me

  • @sadnearsight

yes he was as jason gideon from criminal minds

  • @sadnearsight Me too!!!!! XD

  • @sadnearsight I see him more as Inigo Montoya LOL but I love him as Gideon!!

  • @makeupjunkie43 i cant believe he was Inigo Montoya and Gideon! i love crimial minds and princess bride

  • @sadnearsight holly crap so do i i love the prinnicess brid he was in that movie

  • too much vibrato. lay off the sauce ... he's verging towards Tiny Tim ...

  • @maddymud ME TOO

  • Isnt he awesome!!! Fell in love with him watching Chicago Hope. Thanks for the great song!

  • What year is this?

  • @ZivEstVeritas I too fell in love with him in Chiicago Hope loved him singing to his wife ooooh wow sadly i have only seen him perform once in London but i can die happy. He is my dream singer i love love him

  • The voice is incredible and the rendition is superb. But some songs belong to certain singers and this will always be Judy Garland's alone. Sorry Mandy but you're not in her league.

  • I love you Mandy, I know your infamy wasn't in Music in Australia..... but you've always been my favourite Tenor. XXXX

  • Great voice... nice upload...

  • love mandy's voice always have always will.

  • I like him in "Sunday in the Park with George" but hate when his voice gets all reedy and wavery. Also, it makes my dog howl.

  • My name is Inigo Montoya.

    I sing musical theatre.

    Prepare to explode.

  • @BossTrigger I laughed that hard in a LOOOONG TIME. Thanks man.....

  • @BossTrigger "Esplode" LMAO

  • Contralto?

  • @BossTrigger By virtue of this comment that wins the internet forever, you sir are a WINNER. Now excuse me, for I have to explode...

  • He was in Yentl with Barbara Streisand. Very good actor and singer. Hadn't seen this rendition of Over the Rainbow. Well done!!!

  • He was the alien in a TV pilot.... can't remember the title

  • I first learned who Mandy was from Dead Like Me , I never knew he could sing!

  • I saw him live once, he is amazing

  • lmao he should have done that on criminal minds... that voice would have made the unsubs cuddle with puppies... OR rip peoples guts out in public....

  • Love his voice

  • omg i didnt even know he sang! so good

  • best version I have ever heard.

  • I never knew he could sing!

  • Unusual voice. A baritone at times on the verge of crossing into a tenor.

Maybe he did it for its dramatic effect.

  • One of my favorite hours of television ever. Letterman show, Cher is booked (her first time after the "asshole" comment). She cancels at last minute, two hours before the taping, for specious reasons. Letterman spends first 15 mins of show absolutely trashing her. Then Mandy Patinkin comes out and sings, inspiring Letterman to recant (not really). Then producer tells Dave that Cher is here! Dave is visibly shaken. Out comes Larry Bud, who tells Dave he really is an asshole. Then Buck Henry!

  • @solmssen

    Nice trivia. Thanks. :)

  • Hello.

    My name is Inigo Montoya.

    I sing a song.

    Prepare to die.

  • @4cellar2door0 lolllllllllllllllll

  • Mandy Patinkin just plain rawks. He has a voice of a angel. He also played on Chicago Hope about the same time ER did. plus he plays on a series where he's dead. cant remember the name of the show. this man as nothing total awesome talent!

  • @monkeybone509 Think the show was Dead Like Me. :)

  • Wow! Hard to imagine that this is the same man that played Jasan Gideon in Criminal Minds.

I wish he would have stayed in that show... He's one talanted son of a gun!

  • just love him!

  • Mandy Patinkin has one of the best voices I have ever heard!! I have seen him in concert, and he is pure magic, not to mention energy!! I have not seen many who can do it all, and Mandy can!!! He gives his all, thank you Mandy, you just make me smile:)))))

  • Mandy likes to push his limits and explore every avenue without fear. Great job.

When I first heard about his concert tour, I wasn't so sure it would be any good. Thought it might just be an ego trip but the Man Can Sing.

  • Stop that Mandy....dude... Come on man.. dont be singin about lemon drops... you a gangsta man!!!

  • It's funny to see this because first look you think mofia! Then you see the cute twinkle in his eyes and hear his cute little voice :D

  • Seeing this man for the first time in my life.... I am in awe of his performance. Well done!

  • llllllllllllllllllllllllllllove!

  • Okay, right back at you with the man-crush thing as far as Mr. Patinkin is concerned. He's nothing short of fierce, but NO, this song doesn't work for him. I think Judy Garland owns it, and there it should lie.

  • @NastyMan1960

Judy does own it. I can always handle a new female version... but in general it's not a man's song... much as I love Mandy!!!

  • Gideon??? Really??? I never knew. Wonderful voice though.

  • wonderful voice......

  • Woah, this is kick-ass profiler Agent Gideon, Chicago Hope medic? Patinkin? Really?

  • OMG, do you imagine that I watched recently Chicago Hope, and that I was unable to recognize Inigo Montoya! I am so ashamed of myself. He sings wonderfully. Too bad he didn't sing in Princess Bride, but I was lucky enough to hear him sing in Chicago Hope. :)

  • I recently rediscovered how much I love his album. I've been listening to it non-stop for days now and it never gets old. What a voice!

  • I remember watching this when it first aired and having the unexpected reaction of becoming very emotional. The performance has stuck with me ever since and watching it today all these years later the same emotions have resurfaced. He sings the song as an actor would, seeing and feeling the images fly by as the melody unfolds, truly remarkable. Of course the sheer greatness of the songs lyrics and melody also have something to do with it as well. Remarkably touching and poignant

  • Who would have thought?

  • I am inigo montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.

  • Damn - who knew?

  • @cooksy55406 he's absolutely fantastic!!

  • He's a gem.

  • sounds like fake singing

  • Best Broadway singer ever.

  • OMG! his voice brought tears to my eyes. Damn i never knew my dear sweet agent Gideon could sing like this. It makes me love him even more.

  • Best actor for a criminal profiler ever he's the coolest chracter on the show he really reminds me alot of my dad

  • His voice just brings tears to my eyes as soon as I hear it! So beautiful and clear and lilting! And he has such control! Amazing talent and amazing man!!!

  • damn gideon

  • oh the "Mandy" something..shit...put something meaningful here...I Love him..lol

  • 4 people have clicked "Dislike." HOW DARE THEY! The man sings like a bird!

  • @mharbaugh in criminal minds that's his characters favorite animal he has pictures of them in his apartment

  • What a wonderful voice. Whao!

  • Omg I had no idea he sang! He's amazing.

  • @teis1411 He won a Tony award for singing the role of Che Guevara in the musical Evita. He is a Broadway musical legend.

  • His voice is incredible, and the piano background is spectacular too!

  • he looks like sylars uncle. but he's an incredible broadway performer. it's amazing he's been able to get the regular movie roles he does. he's a performer of yesteryear. nowadays hollywood just wants talentless lookers who try to act "hip" and "relevant".

  • Sme Mandy Patinkin as on Princess Bride and Criminal Minds? Cool!

  • I just keep on returning to this video clip every once in a while, it brings peace and now I can sing it as it plays to my newborn son as a lullaby.

  • patinkins got one hell of a voice

  • God, I didn't know he sang! He is a symbol of pure talent! Love his acting, especially in Criminal Minds, and now, I love his voice! My favourite version to this song for sure!

  • I love him. a lot. :) <3

  • I love how he gets more powerful at around 2:18

    So amazing.

I have 3 of his CDs.

  • what a touching and moving interprepation...

  • Holy shit he's goood!!! He was my favourite character on Criminal Minds too, and I think this kinda fits to agent Gidion's rather sensitive personality. The high notes were pretty surprising. And too much vibrato, but still holy shit, amazing performance!

  • wow...hes really good. I just ddnt expect him agent gidieon singing somewhere over the rainbow. He was my fave character on CM's. ^^

  • so beautiful........had know idea he was so talented musically,,, became a fan thru Criminal minds... what an inspiration...

  • He's going to be in Chicago on Sunday at the Cadillac Palace. FRONT ROW SEATS!

  • @eagleandguitarguy44 Have a wonderful time! He is a wonderful singer, singing with his heart. I I envy you :-)

  • @sherrardfan I GOT MANDY FREAKING PATINKIN'S AUTOGRAPH!!!

  • @eagleandguitarguy44 Wow! Congratulations. I´m happy for you, that you got such a great memory. (Will you, please, send him to Copenhagen for a concert. :-))

  • First time I saw him sing was with Madonna in the movie " Dick Tracy "

  • I fall in love with his voice every time he says. So expressive! Sigh! :))

  • Beautiful voice! I like his voice better than Judy Garland's version.

  • He's sexy

  • i am a huge criminal minds fan and am totally shocked to find out that this fine actor can sing. Who Knew??? I will be buying a cd as soon as I can get out. I am waiting for the 100th. episode to replay. Scary. the best yet. Love u Mandy.

  • i love his singing.

  • I'd initially only known him from The Princess Bride. What an amazing, clear voice he has. Just lovely!

  • Loved this guy ever since I first saw him in Evita. Bought everything he ever put out and went to every concert that came near me. He'll always be my favorite entertainer.

  • I saw him in concert in Columbus Zoo and when he ended this song a peacock in the distance called and he answered it back right in time with the music, it was MAGIC

  • he was also in chicago hope years ago and used to sing on that

  • I totally have a man crush on this guy.

  • RIGHT DUDE!? hahaha I'm right with you. Thanks for saying it first.

  • @jkdeadite Haha! Right!? I mean, I'm a girl... but he's like 53 and I'm like... a lot younger... but Like, totally my Broadway Dad! Like utterly and completely! :D

  • Ok... that's it.

This cements the fact that he should have sang something in The Princess Bride.

Can't you just imagine Inigo Montoya sitting on a rock or something, singing this song? Hehe.

    Gotta love Mandy.

  • You are so right! My name is Inigo Montoya and now I am singing for you....

  • @HanBOHobbit I say the same thing for Yentle.

  • @EnchantedSilence Well, he doesn't sing in Yentl because Barbra Streisand was a music hog. I mean, she has a great voice, undoubtedly, but she totally left Mandy under-appreciated.

  • @HanBOHobbit it's kind of like idina menzel not singing in enchanted... people make too many mistakes like these

  • @lol2ph I know. I think because Yentl was Babs' first director-job, she took full liberty of the "I'm in charge, you're not" clause of the contract, and took all the singing for herself. It kind of sours my liking for her, but that's life. If Mandy can accept it with grace, so can I.

  • @HanBOHobbit That would have been kinda funny....

  • I think he is fantastic

  • I always get goosebumps when he sings... beautiful : )

  • unreal...i always thought of him as a hard ass character player (i liked him in dead like me)...a little too dramatic but a good voice

  • I love Mandy Patinkin and I had no idea he sings! I don't watch television except for what's online and Netflix... guess I missed him! WOW!!!

  • Standing ovation!!!! What a melodic voice!
