the down side of a charging infra structure coast to coast - the leaf would have to stop every fifty miles and charge for 30 mins...whos gonna wanna do that?
How come GM can only produce a gasoline generator that gets 35 mpg while the Toyota Prius gets 50 mpg running on its generator. And its just a Hybrid!! The Chevy Volt is a Plug-IN!! The Prius can go 600 miles emitting a few CO2, while the Volt emits less CO2 but can offer 40 miles of Zero emission pure all electric driving. $40 for six hundred miles or 40 miles for $1.25 , Zero emissions? GO PRIUS AND VOLT!!!
Buy a Nissan Leaf!! This Volt is a piece of junk that GM execs are again trying to force down the throats of Americans promoting what they want not want the public wants..
@HunterXray Im with you...these are for tree hugger extreme types and deep pocket types...evs arent gonna have any real impact on the enviro until they are everywhere.
@marker220 40 miles is the daily average national commute. The generator can power the volt for an additional 300 miles. It would take the leaf 10 days to go from NY to Florida if you could find a place to plug in for the 10 hour charge time. The volt could be driven like a normal car for long trips without fear or delay of not having an outlet!
@40markava But a Prius would use less fossil fuel to to make the NY to florida trip. Nissan Leaf can be quick charged in 30 min from 0% to 80%. We just need to get the infrastructure in place (just like 100 years ago with gasoline).
@40markava I worked through your trip from NY to Florida - Not a one day trip for a pure EV i agree. My trip was from Metropolitan Musium of Art in NYC to the Adrienne Arsht Center of Performing Arts in Miami. Distance 1287 miles. Drive time 22 hours. Volt gets the first 40 miles gas free but then gets 37mpg. Prius gets 50 mpg. The volt will use 33.7 gallons of gas for the non-stop trip the Prius uses 25.74 gallons for the same trip. The Prius can cary one more person and costs less.
The Chevy Volt will get more mileage on Electricity as Battery Technology improves. All I need is 30 more miles on Pure Electric Mode and it will fulfill my personal driving needs. I commute 60 miles a day. The Volt currently offer 40 miles.
you still have to put gas in it? so its just another hybrid, POS! I use to have a VW Jetta TDI that gave me 50ish mpg's and i got more boost out of it through tubing and a intake kit/ exhaust. it hauldazz! i ran a 14.2 at 106mph 1/4mile at the track. add TIEN suspention and a set of BBS LM wheels....whooo i love that car.... but im a supercharged e39 ///M5 guy now...FUK TREES!
What's with your wardrobe Mr. Riswick........Does your mommie need to tell you to tuck in your shirt. And what's with that $8 haircut. It always amazes me how someone who obviously cares nothing about their personal appearance can land a job as any kind of spokesperson. Just plain sloppy.
I want one - my Lincolk MKX lease is up in October. Please release this before then GM!!!!! My commute to work is 20 miles; would love to have the Volt, as I refuse to buy Japanese, but want this or a Fusion hybrid. Fusion still burns gas, where I could go charged weeks before burning a drop with the Chevy for the occasional client trip.
this car will be a big flop.. just wait and see... people nowadays travel way more than 40 miles a day.. the price of this vehicle is way too high.. I'd rather get a prius if I had to choose between the two..
I wonder when these car companies are going to do the unthinkable and mate a 4 cylinder turbo diesel to an electric motor for the electric cars, to me it would make alot more sense because it would still give consumers great gas mileage
i would agree too but the cost to do that would lower the amount of buyers. since it cost a lot it would take a while to gain the extra money you spent on it
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This car sucks, and will never come out. and it is just GM playing catchup instead of innovating. what they really should be doing it coming out with a diesel.
Just to build a Volt requires over 50 barrels of oil energy and creates more toxic waste plus uses up thousands of gallons of freshwater.
The "environmentally sound" thing to do would be to properly maintain an existing midsize car (not an urban assault SUV/truck) to extend its service life for several years.
The govt., Govt. Motors (GM), and the green movement would have you think otherwise.
texan176, it is not just about the environment, it is also about not sending your money to the Middle East. That properly maintained existing car/truck wont do that, the Volt will.
This is kind of beyond the scope of this discussion but the middle east actually sends us their money daily.
The US govt. auctions our debt to nations like the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait as well as Japan, China, etc....just to pay bills and make employee payroll.
The entire thing is not sustainable. Hybrid vehicles are just a bandaid on a body covered 95% with 3rd degree burns.
Buying gas = sending money to the middle east is the dumbed down version the media blathers
"spoken like a true tool of Big Oil. You are a shill"
Translation = I can not come up with an argument to disprove what you said so here's a personal attack
Like it or not the middle east holds well over 3 trillion dollars of US debt, global oil demand rises by 3-7% per year, and hybrid vehicles are nothing more than a money maker for car makers.
I could call you a tool for Big Auto but I won't stoop to your level.
Come up with something other than a personal attack & I'll reply.
Right, because chrome looks less valuable than flat paint?
Kinda looks a little more like polished aluminum to me. Even if it is chrome, just like every other GM car you don't have to get the chrome wheels, they're optional or easily replaced by some other finish...so quitchurbitchin
Snapper314, No, nickel-metal hydride batteries do not hold more energy then Lithium batteries, they just last longer. The patent will expire in about 5 years anyway and then anyone can make them.
Im looking forward to seeing just how much of the proto bits made it onto the actual product and the hype. But, if the Camaro is any indication, GM may well live up to, if not surpass the hype that it has built.
If a little more exposure was given to this vehicle, people would know that the Volt was in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.......for all of 12 seconds.

any sort of generator would work. if a turbine is more efficient than a diesel then that would work as well
