  • Get apple to tell you the factory mac address is the only way I can think of.

  • @errold32 you've got the serial number, i doubt it be possible to find the mac that way, don't know how this works, but if this serial number is device specific, so should the mac be right? and everything goes in to a database, and there a few things we can do... Ask for it, say we got this serial, might we have the mac address? or do the not so honest thing ... but won't we become blackheads? but were helping so what are we then??

  • Sad day i hope the culprit does the honest thing !

  • If all else fails, and if Kris uses facebook, we could hope that the thief also looged into fb from Kris's ipad, do a search for 'Facebook Keeps A History Of Everyone' and it should lead to a forbes page

"The report includes a list of the machines that L.B. has used Facebook from, how often she has signed in from the machine, as well as a list of all the other Facebookers who have logged in on that machine"

Only thing is, will fb release that info

  • THT GUY MIGHT HAV SOLD IT 4 DRUGZ WHO KNOS. AND I HOPE HE GETS EATEN BY BEES AND GOS TO HELL. WHO AGREES?

  • Should we slashdot this to recruit some more help (might get you more viewers too)? Could the geek group website handle the traffic?

  • @darobison42 We can take it, share it! :)

  • If he's smart, he doesn't use the iPad2 till the storm lays down and tries to change the Mac-address or sells it on the streets or any of the numerous second hand sites.... I hope for you guys he's not. Was there any confidential or unrecoverable information on the iPad2 ? I've searched a bit but didn't find any useable info yet. Greets from Belgium (WhiteHatHacker2)

  • I didn't know The Doctor is associated with thegeekgroup.

  • Here's a good trap. Set up a cool free party with big cash prize for any one that got an

Ipad2 for xmas in the Grand Rapids area. Perp will most likely turn up with Ipad in hand, because they are a greedy SOB. Check EACH Ipad serial no. as they enter, lock the door and call the cops if you find the right serial number.

  • @ndyag100 The thief probably watches this channel too and reads this comments... So now your idea is busted ;) If you have really good ideas, best to send PM I guess ;) Grtz J

  • maybe the gps on a i phone

  • Douche! I hope you guys get'em!!

  • If I had every had someone do that to me or my wife I bet there would be a good chance I would shoot first and call the police later.I shure hope you catch them.

  • Yes, he's obvioulsy not, he is more of a chap version of Sheldon Cooper, I dont know if it makes him geekier or not, but Class, he has lots of it!

Progress in the tracking is beeing made right now it seems, from some smart ideas that a viewer posted in the previous vid! pastebin dot com/5ACws8KK

(maybe already tried, but smart ideas nonetheless!)

Catch him, make him confess, bring on the Spanish Inquisition (nobody excepts them but he might right now! Fetch the rack, annnnd the comfy chair!)

  • @siouxsettewerks Aw thanks for the kind words! After some of the consecutive comments, I thought that no one bothered to read it!

BTW, I'm kinda dry in terms of ideas, and I don't think that @ndyag100's idea would work the way he presented it. However, it you offered a 'free' upgrade for an beta iPad 3 as the prize...

  • Capturing all internet traffic throughout the bulding. Even if you only had enough drive space to hold an hours worth of packets, I bet that would be enough time to sift through it.. When setup right you could recontruct the pages visited from said device from the packet captures, thus revealing the name of the attacker. Even if it was an SSL session with facebook, you would have still had the unique profile ID. Between that and catching people being malicous on your network, seems workable

  • Man what a wanker whoever that was that took it. The lame side effect of all of this is the loss of trust, and sense of security around the facility. People can't / won't leave the out stuff they bring then they need to run to the restroom on a busy day, etc. I hope you find it and catch them, the odds seem to be stacked in your favor offering a reward more thn 3x the value of the iPad. Whilst I dont have a good way to get it back it seems setting up a network logger would have helped (cont)

  • I wish I had the skills to do something to help. If you haven't already though, I'd recommend calling every pawn shop in a 50 mile radius and have them on the lookout for it (give them the serial #, etc.)

  • I'm happy to hear the prograss you've been having, I'd really love to help in a more active way. Even told a couple of friends that work in net security.

How about this idea? When you find the guy, put his cell phone in the stomper.

  • @MoralidadMty YEAH THEN HE'LL HAV 2 GET A NEW PHONE ;P WHO EVER DID THIS I HOPE THEY GO TO HELL BY GETTING EATEN BY BEES.

  • @robloxaddct HAVE YOU EVER HEARD CAPS LOCK COULD BE TURNED OFF?

  • still gone

  • I'm trying to track that iPad whole day and now it is middle of the night in my county and i'm still trying to help you guys.I do not need money, it is about friendship, not stupid money. You helped me alot guys, so it's my turn now to help you.

  • if you have a log of the mac adresses at the party why not post them to narrow the search down. I know the issues involved with that but at least it would give us somewhere to start. Also if i remember correctly apple may have a log of serial numbers and the correlated mac adresses of all their devices. If that's the case you could call them up and potentially have them look it up for you and then the rest is trivial.

  • one of your friends needs tapping into a variac and popped by @photonicinduction I hope you get it back soon

  • I contacted Apple, they should have got in contact with Chris earlier today.

  • @LightSwitchr They did indeed. I don't know who your friends are, but we had a most interesting phone call today thanks to you. :) Even Tim Cook is now well aware of this iPad hunt. In case anyone is wondering, he's a pretty nice guy.

  • @thegeekgroup Excellent, I hope you got the information you need. :)

  • i hope you get it back geeks rule!

  • Good luck to everybody, I hope you will find that bastard.

  • What chat programs are on the iPad? If I recall right, some applications will do the annoying/helpful-ish auto-sign in and have the direct chat feature... if you can trick the person into doing a direct-chat, you could possibly get the IP. (assuming they're using the iPad at all)

  • Hope u catch the person who stole it and Appel should be a sponsor good luck

  • I tried to get the Army in it. i got friends in the IT department but apparently not being able to do so haha.

  • You hear that apple? You might donate ipads *wink wink nudge nudge*

  • I know this sounds silly but try contacting an actually intelligent person at apple they helped track my I pod when it was stolen,, some dummy tried to "factory reset" then upload their own i tunes catolog on it thats how apple tracked them I truly hope this helps in any way shape or form

  • Great work guys! Can't wait to see that iPad!

When you'll get it, this will go into the history books, because NO ONE has ever tracked an iPad using a serial number to my knowledge.

4:10 The MAC address starts with 7C:C6 or 7C:C5 for Apple iDevices, shouldn't be too hard.

If you ever paired your iPad to the computer via bluetooth, you can go into your preferences then bluetooth and take note of the address listed there. The last pair will be different, usually one letter or number lower.
