Back in the late 90s I was banned from Napster for downloading this song. Fat lot of good that did the recording industry. Artists should--and are--paid well, but I really don't give a shit about their descendants four generations later getting royalties. In fact, I think it's good that they don't. Message to people like that: go get a job.
I hope this is a more well-serving comment on a wonderful song and artist than my first one was. I almost never care for music previous to the 80's and some genre not at all. But this is a truly great song!! <3
Also thank you very much gerrienails for the excellent HD quality of this upload :-)

Merci pour cette excellente vidéo, cette chanson d' Elvis quel plaisir, une belle version par Roy Orbison. Un trés bon flach back . Nostalgie quand tu nous tient........C'est beau. Aline
Roy was great. Not one person ever had anything bad to say about this great singer. I miss him very much. Please watch me sing this song as a tribute to this great performer. There was only one Roy,but I did my best. love Dan Dell
OMG check 2:00 and on.... WHAT A VOCAL RANGE in 2:12 his sounds even like a woman, and then he comes back to that tenor voice, JUST AMAZING and really, really hard to execute.
The 60's, Roy orbison, Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly..etc...Roy always was my favorite, inme he found a fan forever till the day I die. Love his songs, have precious memories at some of them :) THANKS Roy for this great legacy you left us!
A truly amazing voice. Even Elvis once said that Roy was the best vocalist. Roy had an amazing style. He barely moved on stage and yet all that sound and emotion came out anyway. It all came from inside of him.
How sad that a lousy heart condition took him so young. We will never know what more he might have done. Thank goodness he has been saved on videos and CD's. His music has given me many peaceful moments.
July 1960 i had just joined the U S Navy at the courthouse in Cleveland Ohio and wondering why the hell i did a dumb thing like signing my life away to Uncle Sam.
It was a very "Lonely" feeling. I was sitting in a restaurant waiting for my burger and milkshake when all of a sudden i hear "Only the lonely" by Roy Orbison coming over the Juke Box. I'll never forget that inciden and from then own i became a fan of Orbisons music. He was on of the best ever.
Remember dancing to this song on American Bandstand - Bunny Gibson - Original American Bandstand Regular - Philly dancer Thank you Roy Orbison for your great voice and songs !!!
what a lineup, too! so many people loved Roy then, and many more later. The backing band was the TCB Band, which accompanied Elvis Presley from 1969 until his death in 1977: Glen D. Hardin on piano, James Burton on lead guitar, Jerry Scheff on bass, and Ronnie Tutt on drums. Male backing vocalists, /guitarists: Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Steven Soles. Female background vocalists: k.d. lang, Jennifer Warnes, and Bonnie Raitt.
The concert was an instant classic of all the classics. My daddy always made a point to talk about how many "current" stars were chomping at the bit to be able to go down as playing a show with Roy. And, for good reason! I have not, since this one, seen a concert in which soooo many stars came out to sing with, not sing to, but to sing with such a notable start and icon. RIP, Roy my boy.
This man is pure magic My fav is Walk on It takes you into the next life God bless you Mr Orbiston YOU are in my soul You came through many hard times but your music took you and me to heaven...
As a kid, I first heard "Only the Lonely" on my transistor radio while scraping up golf balls at a driving range. I thought, "What a Voice," envisioning Orbison as some sort of cool antihero with ladykiller looks to rival Elvis. A new rock star. Then I finally saw a photo of him & thought, "Oh." But Roy hung in there, kept singing, charting hits, & won me over as a fan on the basis of sheer talent. I have friends who worked with him & said he was the nicest guy in show business. RIP, Roy.
In 1960, a relatively unknown Roy Orbison sent this song to Elvis, who apparently missed it among the many recordings sent to him for consideration. Thus, Roy did it himself. The song launched his recording career, going to #2 on the Billboard chart & to #1 in the UK for 2 weeks. A rock-opera-ballad, "Only the Lonely" was a new sound that altered forever the rock 'n roll genre.
@WALRU11 That would make two then; apparently Elvis also turned down "Claudette" which Roy wrote about his first wife and was picked up by the Everly Bros, and features on the flip side of "All I have to Do Is Dream".
At the time, little was known of Roy. I was only 10 years old when i first heard him. I now think of him as an immortal ( although none truly exists, of course ).
There are few with the range and voice of this man. May he rest in peace, he brought joy to my life.
@WALRU11 There will Absolutely Never be Another like Roy Orbison. He made great songs, was a good person in real life, Suffered great trauma but kept giving his fans music to love until the end of his days. He was a true Legend Of Rock and Roll!
I would like to discover some of his other songs.

He was one of the best blind musicians of his day.
Ray Charles was not the entertainer this pompodored, poodle haired Orbison was.
He forged the way for Stevie Wonder, Ronnie Millsaps, and Jose' Feliciano.
Kudos to this blind guy.
