  • Damn! Check out the amount of detail that it's in this Vectex game...

Tunnels, shrubs, Pine trees, round shaped trees, Electricity Poles, Lamp posts, barriers, Rocky Hills and bends.

Thats impressive for a game thats only 4K back then.

  • I'll say the steering is touchy; moving my stick more than 1/3 over sends me careening into a wall. If only the sides of the track just slowed you down like in Pole Position...

  • I like Vectrex because itr has infinite resolution. Vector graphics. Take that PS3!

  • Yep, forget about Gran Turismo 5, and forget about Forza 4.

    This is the REAL DEAL!!

  • I actually still have mine and it still works. I lost the games to it over the years. My game is about 30 years old. I love playing it good game.

  • I wouldn't be surprised if it had Tube Amps.

  • Pole Position doesn't have SHIT on Hyperchase.

  • the "end" sound at 2:40 is a sped up version of the clean sweep "next level" sound

  • the scrolling of the backgrounds seem to be even better than nes or master system driving games which came out years later...

  • This is probably the coolest driving game for the Vectrex.

  • Those animations are AWESOME!

  • How did the vector graphics work?

  • You just can't lose with Vectrex.

  • forza 4

  • @3XP3RTGUY lulz

  • Love them colors...

  • ahh the good old days, I love the vectrex, some day I'll have one, and I'd better be quick or they are going to be more expensive than now, I can't find it in less than 700$ it's goddamned expensive

  • ...This looks AWESOME. I dont know why vector graphics arent used more today (for 2D games) clean, smooth and low memory footprint.

  • I am totally getting a vectrex and this game after seeing it.

  • dude was selling this for 100$, the console itself with 1 controller.

god i didn't get it to it in time lol :(

this i would buy with the multi cart

  • I have never seen this console before, but the framerate is mind blowing!!!

  • id like to see pole position

  • Pretty cool.

  • Looks like Vectrex's answer to Sega's 80's game Turbo

  • This is very impressive, especially for 1982. There's some fantastic engineering and programming involved! The 1980s video game crash wiped out a lot of innovators who otherwise would've made the gaming world an entirely different place.

  • in tron. the vectrex is the best. but its still the best in the real world.

  • Mama used the power of Vectrex!

  • IN 82 YOU COULDN'T HAVE A GAME LIKE THIS IN ANY OTHER CONSOLE

  • is there online?

  • These graphics are fucking sexy.

  • Skip Ads 0.01

  • @monkeyboyfss LOOL, when you want to make a link you got to put : instead of .

    xD

  • I bet AVGN would gripe about the constant crashing you would end up getting for no good reason. As far as racing games go, "you're really scraping out the bottom of the shit barrel!"

I kinda think this is cool. I don't like the light pulses so much. Watching that will make my eyes ache. : /

  • @Agent1W Yeah no kidding. Don't get me wrong, I love the AVGN, but because his show is so popular, younger audience who watch it and don't have an appreciation for older games will be quick to dismiss them. They'll probably play them for 2 minutes, then they'll say that the game sucks, when in reality, THEY are the ones that suck at the game. Ever heard of a little thing called "practice?"

  • @MrDemonSushi That's the AVGN's job, of course, is to find which games that don't make the mark. AVGN is quick to recognize the games that didn't fail so hard, such as the SMB series. He would explain that too many of these games are not well developed.

  • This game still looks fun!!! And look at the speed of it!

I might write something like this for fun :)

  • I got this vladdy game

  • "MOTHER FUCKER!!! Ah, it's still a high score..." lol

  • i need that game. seriously.

  • that looks awesome

  • this game is boss.

  • The only way to play this game is on the original machine. You can't really emulate the analog stick movement without one tuned properly, and the controls are DAMN sensitive. The difficulty is really crushing on game 2. Dodging the cars becomes damn near impossible after a while, because they "jump" towards you rather than scroll.. Apparently you can get a free car at 10,000 points or something... but I never managed to do that even once.

  • That game is fun, I tried it on the psp emulator but only problem is that when I use the analog stick to steer it jerks it and it goes too fast making it unplayable :(

  • And you're saying this was 2d ?

  • This is one of the few videogames that gets me into "The Zone". The Zone. A place where you aren't in the game, but the game is the only thing in existence. The Zone. A place of pure focus. The Zone.

  • i'm on your youtubes.

    watchin ur vids in 1080p

  • That is downright beautiful. What 2600 Night Driver should have been. The shear beauty that Vector Graphics were. And, be mindful that the source code is so small, ten thousand Vectrex games could have fit in one of our modern printer drivers.

  • that game looks awesome!

they just don't make them like that anymore... :'(

  • I kind of want a Vectrex after watching all of his reviews but they are damn expensive.

  • i am selling mine for 5 euros

  • that looks really damn fun!

  • I was at a local trade place and said "Do you guys have a Turbo Grafx?" and told my story about it (you can read it on the Turbo Grafx/Pad review that was just uploaded.

    "Nope.."

"Well the only other thing I would get on the spot would be.. Oh, I dunno, a vectrex."

"Seriously? A guy just dropped one off and not even take any cash for it but our manager wants to take it home with him.."

"I'll give you $70 in cash right now for it."

"... ok then, i'll just tell him it didn't work. Give."

  • That isn't a retro gaming story, that was a love story!

  • @LanIost You lucky sod XD

  • @LanIost i woulda fired the workers

    LOL

  • @LanIost hah i bet the manager fired them :D

    i would FK Lol

    vectrex isnt cheap

  • Ugh. I hated Poll Position.

  • hail vectrex!

  • imgaine playing this game 30 years ago. it looks fantastic and it takes you on the road through tunnels, woodland, and even canyons. the graphics are crisp from what i see and it'd be a real treat to own a vectrex back in the day--hell, i wish i had one sitting next to me now. all hail vectrex.

  • This game looks amazing.

  • I love the music you play at the beggining with the cheering and ool instruments

  • @serenityff CMON its not that hard, theres a ton of them for sale all the time, check EBAY and amazon, there are a bunch on there RIGHT NOW!

  • what the intor song? just wonderin as its kickass

  • I lol'd at the end with the background talking.

    "Mother******! Ah, still a highscore."

  • Lol @ ds diary video. "dont buy a girl a diary for their ds. Buy them a vectrex" Epic Win!

  • LOVE VECTOR GRAPHICS!!!

  • ¬¬ these are VECTOR GRAPHICS!

No color or any filled surfaces(only lines), but also, no pixels and ultra-smooth motion!

  • sounds like a wet fart when you crash

  • if ur farts sound like that, please see a doctor

  • Looks more visually impressive than GT5, may I say...

  • thats cuz gt5 dont run on vectrex mothafocker! Vector graphics ftw

  • Some trees look like faces O.o

  • This looks great! I think that the monochrome graphics look sweet!

  • Haha I was thinking the exact same thing! The sound!

  • Magic of vector graphics...almost as if video games took an evolutionary step backwards when they went to raster. Took 10 years to get back on track.

  • I'd never actually seen a Vectrex game before, strangely enough. This one looks almost like a playable laser show. I'm very surprised by how smooth most of that animation is (and this is an '82 game? Sheesh).

  • Scaling capabilities with vectors are way easier to do than with raster.

  • Vectrex FTW yet again!

  • That is some bullshit traffic w/out missiles!

  • I like how the background objects change, unlike other systems where it was just be a bunch of the same trees or billboards.

  • By making these videos you are raising demand for the system, thereby indirectly increasing the prices of them. =p

  • "Motherfucker! Ehh it's still a high score" Lol.

  • sega cd games were fun in a cheesy way. I love my sega cd !

  • The best strategy to control the car is, do not just MOVE the stick left and right. Do this and you will fail. You must HOLD the stick, FIRMLY. Thumb and forfinger TIGHTLY holding the stick, then you can VERY PRECISELY move precisely the position of the analog stick.

  • I had this game! Sold my vectrex 10 years ago for 85$ on ebay with 2 games and no overlay :(

  • VECTOR GRAPHICS ARE THE BEST!!! I want a VECTREX now!!! Can i get one on eBay? Dude my dad use to play those kind of video games! He is the one who introduced me to gaming. I need one of those for him!!

  • oooh the vectrex

  • Great review, but it was also funny you hear you cuss LOL.

  • How can I get one of these here in europe? I need one lol

  • what is the song 0:09-0:17

  • i have to admit i often get tiredof a game review show after like 3 months but ive been into this show for years and never got tired of it

  • @cam5478 it's cause it's always something diffrent =D

  • And because of the awesome host of the show ;)

  • @cam5478 I think that's because Mark doesn't rely on lame jokes or one liners and he doesn't deliberately try to beat up on older games the way other reviewers do. He just has a natural love and appreciation for classic games. He just loves to talk about them the same way that I love to listen to him.

  • @MrDemonSushi i personally think its because he doesnt search for the games faults like most other reviewers hes onl going to complain if its up front and happening all the time like nes flicker which is casual anyway

  • @cam5478

You and me both...i've been watching and subscribed for almost 3 years.

  • glad I purchased my vectrex about a year ago...it's turning into a real cult system because it's so unique (and genuinly fun to play) ..get this system while you can because its going up and up in price..expect to pay over 200 bucks for a good working system....i'm looking to get a vectrex litepen and 3-d imager (but i'm afraid i will have to mortgage my house to do so) Vectrex is the best system ever!!

  • @nintendoneil same here i have been saving up for a vectrex with all the accessories ive seen a vectrex with 20 games and the light pen and 3d imager for 1000$

  • you should do a review on brutal legand it has axes, and zombies, and fire, and blood, and fire, and rock songs from back in the day

  • Dont you just love vector based graphics?

  • I have to say I am genuinely impressed with the look and sound of this game. I really want a vectrex. I this console, the graphics take me back in time to holiday arcades as a kid, I was only like 4 years old, mmmm table top space invaders....mmmmm

  • i think videos of the vectrex don't do it justice, you just need to be actually playing one with the screen overlay.

  • @wweuniversewwe It's a very very old gaming console called a Vectrex. You could probably download the roms / emulator for your PC but there's nothing like this for Xbox Live.

  • The gods of Youtube added a description panel for people like you. Why don't you read it?

  • A Vectrex. A console from the early 80's with a built in screen, like a little TV. It's graphics would be made out of lines of light (kind of like how a lazer pointer works, you know?) that projected up on the inside of the screen. So technically it doesnt actually use pixels. It must've really been a quite odd experience back then. :)

  • Looks like a hard game

  • The graphics on this game look amazing. I'm seriously thinking about getting a Vectrex now after this and your Solar Quest review.

  • You know what GCE should do? Make a TOTALLY new Vectrex, but with improved graphics and sound(Even though it's great already! I don't care for HD much anyway.),add more peripherals, and put on more great games! Plus,I wouldn't mind a couple of revamps here and there, all in the same old design!

  • No peripherals. Seriously every HERO game just gets worse and worse as time goes on. Tony hawk RIDE was terrible.

  • jajaj mother fucker!!!!!

  • I wish i had a Vectex! Not as much as I wish I had a Neo Geo AES though. That's probably the coolest system ever made.

  • Sweet CGR in 1080p

  • Why would you own a 360 or PS3 when theres Vectrex.

  • @M0VYGURU because i can't find one x(

  • My god man, has the world gone mad! No Vectrex nooooooooooooooooo! :)

  • Vectrex rules! Nothing else is like it.

  • Exactly. Screw the newer consoles! (Except for the Wii.) Make way for the classics like the NES,Colecovision, and most of all...VECTREX!

  • councils? Do you mean consoles? Sorry pal but the PS3 does have that power. GT5 will rape the 360 into the ground.

  • GT5 will absolutely crush forza3

its coming out this summer right?

  • Comment removed

  • @RunandGunPictures

    the ps3 definately has that,

uncharted 2 was one of the best games i've played in my whole life, it reminded me when i first played super mario bros 3 and i thought it was the shit, that nothing could top that, and well its true. 360 has a good community but its exclusive library is just getting spammed with FPS that it just ruins it, but lets hope that microsoft comes up with a game as godly as uncharted 2 or SMB3

  • PS3 does not allow no budget indie game development, have you looked into it? It costs $25,000 for licensing rights and the Wii requires you to have a permanent office (and home offices are specifically forbidden).

  • @RunandGunPictures

omfg why the fuk r u talkin bout PS3 VS 360 here???!!! go sumwhere else and be a fanboy but stop commenting ur bullsh*t here

besides we all really know who wins the console wars... VECTREX!

  • Well I object to the multiple thumb downs to me just pointing out a simple fact.

I am not a 360 fan boy, I own about as many systems as our critic here from the 2600 to the modern Wii. I was simply responding to someone claiming that the PS3 allows one to make indie game releases in the style of the golden era of Atari. Which isn't true.

Besides the true victor the console wars was the Sega CD + 32X, Vectrex running a close second.

  • Comment removed

  • what the fuck would you play on the 3do? lol

and who cares about what those consoles WERE. What matters is what they ARE. And today you can get 32X and MegaCD for affordable prices and they have really awesome games.

  • the 32x and mega cd are affordadble today because the games are shit.. and these consoles are widely considered to be one the worst of all time. (well not as bad as philips cd-i) The genesis had far better games at the time than these so called superior systems...what did sega cd have,? mostly just crappy cinema games like sewar shark...the only games i can remember being half decent were silpheed and sonic cd...i have over 15 retro systems but i think i will pass on these 2 mistakes by sega.

  • good for you if you like the sega cd and 32x...all I was trying to say was that these add-ons failed...they didn't sell, and sega quickly scrapped them in favour of the Saturn...Even the folks at sega will admit that they were a mistake...see how I use logic and facts as opposed to swearing and namecalling....give it a try sometime.

  • Thing is you see.. Your logic is SHIT.

Who cares if they were a failure or not! TODAY they are affordable and have interesting and fun games! If Sega lost money, that's they're problem. I mean...was.. 16 years ago.

So by your logic, the Saturn is awful as well cause it failed everywhere but japan?

    And the NGPC?

What about the Dreamcast? It killed Sega off the hardwares. Is it bad as well?

Come back to the future dude.

  • saturn and dreamcast were good systems...they failed because they lost the battle to playstation and xbox...the 32x and sega cd failed because they were just plain shity...the sega cd could only display 32 colours at once...which is why the sega cd had such horrible grainy images...and the sega cd had no third party support...which is why people at the time would rather play chrono trigger or final fantasy 3 rather than sewar shark....

  • Don't diss the Saturn! It has one of the best controllers I've ever used. Not to mention it has some awesome spaceship shooters and fighting games.

  • This game looks really good, I like how the road moves back and forth, and when you go into the tunnel. Vectrex is awesome.

  • ha cool

  • What screen capture software do you guys use for recording pc game footage ? any help would be muchly appreciated

  • Fraps

  • I tried fraps and its really laggy

  • @Iceberg211989

then your pc sucks big time

  • 2.4ghz quad, 4gb ddr3 and 1 gig dedicated HD radeon card dosnt suck dude

  • That ain't shit compared to Vectrex, you don't have a built in monitor and controller on your tower do you? Didn't think so.

  • Ahahaha, you got me there pal :D

  • YEAH! Vectrex FTW! I should know,I have one!

  • I was recording with a higher resolution than fraps can handle *Facepalm*

  • I would use fraps,but 1. I NEVER use an emulator.

    and 2. i haz a mac. :(zorz.

  • That's because your computer sucks

  • 2.4ghz quad, 4gb ddr3 and 1 gig dedicated HD radeon 4850

  • FRAPS. Nothing beats FRAPS.

  • I have yet to see a bad looking vectrex game. These vector graphics stand the test of time much better than most old consoles.

  • So true. Technically this is amazing, espacially if you think of the release date 1982.

  • i always wondered if any of these vectrex , atari or other older consoles have an ending ?????

the only one i remember having some sort of ending was JUNGE HUNT.

  • I have this and find the extreme sensitivity of the steering quite frustrating.

Definitely similar to Enduro on the Atari... but even though Huper Chase is cooler, I think I enjoy playing Enduro more.

  • Wow, that looks really good for a game from 1982.

  • This is awesome! I've been wanting to get a Vectrex, but I wanted to see some gameplay before I got it.

  • I love the punch lines at the end :D

  • Comment removed

  • ^_^

  • i love vectrex graphics

  • AH vector based graphics, awesome, the video memory was in the screen itself and not in a memory module per say.

  • vectrex has a lot of charm. I have vague memories of it as a child.

  • Main ingredient of Vectrex is awesomeness.

  • Lol, I love the end.

  • I love these vector graphics, they look fantastic.

  • Some people say the vectrex is one of the worst game consoles ever made. I think they're wrong, it's pretty cool.

  • @CoolDudeClem ah what was that console apple made called?

  • pin pin or something
