I'll say the steering is touchy; moving my stick more than 1/3 over sends me careening into a wall. If only the sides of the track just slowed you down like in Pole Position...
This is an awesome game, and one of my very favorites on the Vectrex. You wouldn't think a rumble of white noise and a few dozen glowing lines on a screen could convey hurtling down a lonely highway in the dark, but it's amazing how it pulls you in. The chase-plane viewpoint and the shifting perspective are very effective, the cars dwarfed by the cavernous tunnels and the looming trees flying by in the inky blackness.
ahh the good old days, I love the vectrex, some day I'll have one, and I'd better be quick or they are going to be more expensive than now, I can't find it in less than 700$ it's goddamned expensive
This is very impressive, especially for 1982. There's some fantastic engineering and programming involved! The 1980s video game crash wiped out a lot of innovators who otherwise would've made the gaming world an entirely different place.
I bet AVGN would gripe about the constant crashing you would end up getting for no good reason. As far as racing games go, "you're really scraping out the bottom of the shit barrel!"
I kinda think this is cool. I don't like the light pulses so much. Watching that will make my eyes ache. : /
@Agent1W Yeah no kidding. Don't get me wrong, I love the AVGN, but because his show is so popular, younger audience who watch it and don't have an appreciation for older games will be quick to dismiss them. They'll probably play them for 2 minutes, then they'll say that the game sucks, when in reality, THEY are the ones that suck at the game. Ever heard of a little thing called "practice?"
@MrDemonSushi That's the AVGN's job, of course, is to find which games that don't make the mark. AVGN is quick to recognize the games that didn't fail so hard, such as the SMB series. He would explain that too many of these games are not well developed.
The only way to play this game is on the original machine. You can't really emulate the analog stick movement without one tuned properly, and the controls are DAMN sensitive. The difficulty is really crushing on game 2. Dodging the cars becomes damn near impossible after a while, because they "jump" towards you rather than scroll.. Apparently you can get a free car at 10,000 points or something... but I never managed to do that even once.
That game is fun, I tried it on the psp emulator but only problem is that when I use the analog stick to steer it jerks it and it goes too fast making it unplayable :(
This is one of the few videogames that gets me into "The Zone". The Zone. A place where you aren't in the game, but the game is the only thing in existence. The Zone. A place of pure focus. The Zone.
That is downright beautiful. What 2600 Night Driver should have been. The shear beauty that Vector Graphics were. And, be mindful that the source code is so small, ten thousand Vectrex games could have fit in one of our modern printer drivers.
I was at a local trade place and said "Do you guys have a Turbo Grafx?" and told my story about it (you can read it on the Turbo Grafx/Pad review that was just uploaded.
"Nope.."
"Well the only other thing I would get on the spot would be.. Oh, I dunno, a vectrex."
"Seriously? A guy just dropped one off and not even take any cash for it but our manager wants to take it home with him.."
"I'll give you $70 in cash right now for it."
"... ok then, i'll just tell him it didn't work. Give."
imgaine playing this game 30 years ago. it looks fantastic and it takes you on the road through tunnels, woodland, and even canyons. the graphics are crisp from what i see and it'd be a real treat to own a vectrex back in the day--hell, i wish i had one sitting next to me now. all hail vectrex.
I'd never actually seen a Vectrex game before, strangely enough. This one looks almost like a playable laser show. I'm very surprised by how smooth most of that animation is (and this is an '82 game? Sheesh).
The best strategy to control the car is, do not just MOVE the stick left and right. Do this and you will fail. You must HOLD the stick, FIRMLY. Thumb and forfinger TIGHTLY holding the stick, then you can VERY PRECISELY move precisely the position of the analog stick.
VECTOR GRAPHICS ARE THE BEST!!! I want a VECTREX now!!! Can i get one on eBay? Dude my dad use to play those kind of video games! He is the one who introduced me to gaming. I need one of those for him!!
@cam5478 I think that's because Mark doesn't rely on lame jokes or one liners and he doesn't deliberately try to beat up on older games the way other reviewers do. He just has a natural love and appreciation for classic games. He just loves to talk about them the same way that I love to listen to him.
@MrDemonSushi i personally think its because he doesnt search for the games faults like most other reviewers hes onl going to complain if its up front and happening all the time like nes flicker which is casual anyway
glad I purchased my vectrex about a year ago...it's turning into a real cult system because it's so unique (and genuinly fun to play) ..get this system while you can because its going up and up in price..expect to pay over 200 bucks for a good working system....i'm looking to get a vectrex litepen and 3-d imager (but i'm afraid i will have to mortgage my house to do so) Vectrex is the best system ever!!
@nintendoneil same here i have been saving up for a vectrex with all the accessories ive seen a vectrex with 20 games and the light pen and 3d imager for 1000$
I have to say I am genuinely impressed with the look and sound of this game. I really want a vectrex. I this console, the graphics take me back in time to holiday arcades as a kid, I was only like 4 years old, mmmm table top space invaders....mmmmm
@wweuniversewwe It's a very very old gaming console called a Vectrex. You could probably download the roms / emulator for your PC but there's nothing like this for Xbox Live.
A Vectrex. A console from the early 80's with a built in screen, like a little TV. It's graphics would be made out of lines of light (kind of like how a lazer pointer works, you know?) that projected up on the inside of the screen. So technically it doesnt actually use pixels. It must've really been a quite odd experience back then. :)
You know what GCE should do? Make a TOTALLY new Vectrex, but with improved graphics and sound(Even though it's great already! I don't care for HD much anyway.),add more peripherals, and put on more great games! Plus,I wouldn't mind a couple of revamps here and there, all in the same old design!
But... But the 360, allows the garage gamers of old to be born again into the next generation of councils. It's like the era of Atari lives again! Wii, sadly doesn't have this freedom, nor does the PS3.
Gran Turismo 5? Ew. Well that's not my kind of game, but in any case. PS3 does not allow no budget indie game development, it costs $25,000 for licensing rights and the Wii requires you to have a permanent office (and home offices are specifically forbidden). The Xbox 360 is the only consol allowing people to literally make games out of their garage. Marking me down, btw is a dick maneuver when I'm speaking the truth. And yes I didn't spell check. Sorry about that.
uncharted 2 was one of the best games i've played in my whole life, it reminded me when i first played super mario bros 3 and i thought it was the shit, that nothing could top that, and well its true. 360 has a good community but its exclusive library is just getting spammed with FPS that it just ruins it, but lets hope that microsoft comes up with a game as godly as uncharted 2 or SMB3
PS3 does not allow no budget indie game development, have you looked into it? It costs $25,000 for licensing rights and the Wii requires you to have a permanent office (and home offices are specifically forbidden).
Well I object to the multiple thumb downs to me just pointing out a simple fact.
I am not a 360 fan boy, I own about as many systems as our critic here from the 2600 to the modern Wii. I was simply responding to someone claiming that the PS3 allows one to make indie game releases in the style of the golden era of Atari. Which isn't true.
Besides the true victor the console wars was the Sega CD + 32X, Vectrex running a close second.
and who cares about what those consoles WERE. What matters is what they ARE. And today you can get 32X and MegaCD for affordable prices and they have really awesome games.
the 32x and mega cd are affordadble today because the games are shit.. and these consoles are widely considered to be one the worst of all time. (well not as bad as philips cd-i) The genesis had far better games at the time than these so called superior systems...what did sega cd have,? mostly just crappy cinema games like sewar shark...the only games i can remember being half decent were silpheed and sonic cd...i have over 15 retro systems but i think i will pass on these 2 mistakes by sega.
good for you if you like the sega cd and 32x...all I was trying to say was that these add-ons failed...they didn't sell, and sega quickly scrapped them in favour of the Saturn...Even the folks at sega will admit that they were a mistake...see how I use logic and facts as opposed to swearing and namecalling....give it a try sometime.
Who cares if they were a failure or not! TODAY they are affordable and have interesting and fun games! If Sega lost money, that's they're problem. I mean...was.. 16 years ago.
So by your logic, the Saturn is awful as well cause it failed everywhere but japan?
And the NGPC?
What about the Dreamcast? It killed Sega off the hardwares. Is it bad as well?
saturn and dreamcast were good systems...they failed because they lost the battle to playstation and xbox...the 32x and sega cd failed because they were just plain shity...the sega cd could only display 32 colours at once...which is why the sega cd had such horrible grainy images...and the sega cd had no third party support...which is why people at the time would rather play chrono trigger or final fantasy 3 rather than sewar shark....
This system is so underrated. Whenever you hear people talk about old school you'll usually hear Colecovision, Atari 2600, Master System, or the Nes. But you'll never hear them say Vectrex. I was born after the time of the Vectrex but even I can appreciate how cool it is.
Damn! Check out the amount of detail that it's in this Vectex game...
Tunnels, shrubs, Pine trees, round shaped trees, Electricity Poles, Lamp posts, barriers, Rocky Hills and bends.
Thats impressive for a game thats only 4K back then.

Besides the true victor the console wars was the Sega CD + 32X, Vectrex running a close second.

what the fuck would you play on the 3do? lol
and who cares about what those consoles WERE. What matters is what they ARE. And today you can get 32X and MegaCD for affordable prices and they have really awesome games.
Sisound 2 years ago
the 32x and mega cd are affordadble today because the games are shit.. and these consoles are widely considered to be one the worst of all time. (well not as bad as philips cd-i) The genesis had far better games at the time than these so called superior systems...what did sega cd have,? mostly just crappy cinema games like sewar shark...the only games i can remember being half decent were silpheed and sonic cd...i have over 15 retro systems but i think i will pass on these 2 mistakes by sega.
nintendoneil 2 years ago
good for you if you like the sega cd and 32x...all I was trying to say was that these add-ons failed...they didn't sell, and sega quickly scrapped them in favour of the Saturn...Even the folks at sega will admit that they were a mistake...see how I use logic and facts as opposed to swearing and namecalling....give it a try sometime.
nintendoneil 2 years ago
Thing is you see.. Your logic is SHIT.
Come back to the future dude.
Sisound 2 years ago
saturn and dreamcast were good systems...they failed because they lost the battle to playstation and xbox...the 32x and sega cd failed because they were just plain shity...the sega cd could only display 32 colours at once...which is why the sega cd had such horrible grainy images...and the sega cd had no third party support...which is why people at the time would rather play chrono trigger or final fantasy 3 rather than sewar shark....

Don't diss the Saturn! It has one of the best controllers I've ever used. Not to mention it has some awesome spaceship shooters and fighting games.

This game looks really good, I like how the road moves back and forth, and when you go into the tunnel. Vectrex is awesome.

I have yet to see a bad looking vectrex game. These vector graphics stand the test of time much better than most old consoles.

So true. Technically this is amazing, espacially if you think of the release date 1982.
GunshipHero 2 years ago
i always wondered if any of these vectrex , atari or other older consoles have an ending ?????
the only one i remember having some sort of ending was JUNGE HUNT.
tristan498 2 years ago
I have this and find the extreme sensitivity of the steering quite frustrating.
Definitely similar to Enduro on the Atari... but even though Huper Chase is cooler, I think I enjoy playing Enduro more.
SteveBenway 2 years ago
Wow, that looks really good for a game from 1982.

This is awesome! I've been wanting to get a Vectrex, but I wanted to see some gameplay before I got it.

This system is so underrated. Whenever you hear people talk about old school you'll usually hear Colecovision, Atari 2600, Master System, or the Nes. But you'll never hear them say Vectrex. I was born after the time of the Vectrex but even I can appreciate how cool it is.

AH vector based graphics, awesome, the video memory was in the screen itself and not in a memory module per say.

vectrex has a lot of charm. I have vague memories of it as a child.

Some people say the vectrex is one of the worst game consoles ever made. I think they're wrong, it's pretty cool.
