Freeplay's treadle power source still trumps anything that's come out so far, inasfar as reliable, self-contained power is concerned. Current solar panels are waaay behind the tech curve (standard panel tech is years and years old) and the principles involved should be embracing the various new entrepreneurial innovations much, MUCH faster than they are; shame on them.
Go to solarstyle . com it has solar charger with an on board battery that cost only $20 and it's connectors ar $4 At solio their cheapest solar charger is 80$ and their connectors cost $10 rip off!
Awesome, even though it is expensive, it is neat and green. I did expect it to be pricy, even health food is expensive, so a solar panel charger is going to be out of comfortable range.
At first I was cool and I wanted to buy it and then I saw the price... $79.95 for a tiny key chain charger. No way!!!!!! If it was like 30$ I would buy it but this is just too expensive. I like the envirement and all but I never knew it was so expensive.
How is this piece of plastic and rechargeable batteries any better for the enviroment than drawing a couple watts from a wall outlet? If you want to do something good for the environment stop producing billions of new consumer products a year and telling people its "green" as incentive to buy it.
I agree that the benefit from this charger is not going to improve the environment. "Don't buy it if you dont need it". I see this product more usefull if you are going to be somewhere and there is no electricity around, your travelling etc.
very much so, too much has been wasted on the product itself for the product to actually balance out what good it may do. not helping the earth what so ever.

My ass! Look at all those god damn un-degradalbe plugs and hook-ups you made for this shitlio, you save some power but waste so much on the product alone... you out of you rmind
but it's 3 to 4 years for the solarpannels to generate enough power to compensate for how much energy it took to create the pannels in the first place.
No. That is like saying people will never have "personal" computers because computers take up an entire room and weigh several tons. They DID, but in the future they WON'T
You have a good point. But I have actually found that most companies that sell solar panels offer 25 year warranties. In addition the efficiency of the panels keep increasing. We have a ways to go, but the technology keeps improving, and the price keeps dropping...
If more people had things like these it would be a big step of saving the in invaerment, [I'm sory. i don't know how to spell the vord.] helping to stop the global warming. :]
A main difference between the Solio and these other two options is the fact that the Solio has a "brain" in the form of software application which tells it the correct power needed to charge a cell phone, ipod etc. as soon as it is connected with it. The others have a fixed power output which limit their functionality. The other factor is that the Solio has a replaceable rechargeable battery which means ultimately it was built to last.
I've only tested out the Solio, so unfortunately I don't have an efficiency comparison on the Freeloader or the Powermonkey. However we were very impressed w/ the diff. mounting options on the Solio and the overal design... It works great.
We've only tried out the Solio, sorry I cant help you out on that one. From what I can see on the web, the solio is in middle price range, and in my personal opition, has a way cooler design, and more mounting options. We'l be looking to try out the Freeloader and the Powermonkey. Have you tried any of them?

Indeed. It's basically an overpriced set of small solar panels with some capacitors. You basically pay for the additional connections.

This is a funny idea...but....
Solar energy is BAD becouse:
Everything needs engery. am i Right?
It also needs engery to make these solar pannels.
It takes 6 years before solarpannels have made enough enegry to produce the engergy that the fabrick needed to make the solar pannels.
But after 6 years you have to replace the solarpannels becouse they arent makin enough energy to (for example) refill your battery!
so... that is the problem with solar energy.
