I feel bad for the movie. After this scene, shit got kinda boring by comparison. The two best characters offed halfway into the film and the only other remotely developed character at that point was Joker...
@jonnie8547 Because it was their job. The D.I. is supposed to form a group of men into a coherent fighting unit. Pyle was the weak link in the chain, and needed to be toughened up. It's fucked up that he went insane, but it wasn't Hartman's fault.
Simple logic: He wouldn't KNOW he couldn't handle them prior to joining the corps and being exposed to them. Plus he handled the sargeant well enough. It was the brutal beating by his own platoon that set him on the path to madness.

@jonnie8547 Because it was their job. The D.I. is supposed to form a group of men into a coherent fighting unit. Pyle was the weak link in the chain, and needed to be toughened up. It's fucked up that he went insane, but it wasn't Hartman's fault.
